Q&A
What first drew you to the Tomb Raider franchise, and what initially inspired you to cosplay as Lara Croft?

I just got a PS1 for Christmas and was looking for a new game to play. At the rental store I saw Tomb Raider The Last Revelation. Seeing her in the media for years, I kinda associated her with being a female Indiana Jones, and being the huge Dr. Jones fan, coupled with the Egyptian pyramid on the cover of the game, I decided to give it a try. I was absolutely hooked. For Halloween that year, I decided to be Lara. While researching the costume online, I discovered a whole community of fans who love to dress as Lara and take pictures. From there it’s all history.

What Lara Croft costume did you tackle first?

The classic costume since it’s the most recognizable, and my favorite at the time.

What is your favorite Lara Croft ensemble?

I really loved the catsuit with the glasses and the ear piece. Makes you feel like you’re in Mission Impossible or something.

What Croft costumes are still on your roster?

I plan to remake the classic outfit.

Which Lara costume was the most difficult to construct? Was it due to a particular garment or prop?

Probably the Underworld costume since it was very detailed. The top and shorts had a specific design that was impossible to find in a store, along with the gunbelt and backpack. I pretty much had to hand make everything.

Lara Croft’s lifestyle is full of intrigue and adventure. Do you have any memorable photoshoots or convention appearances that pay tribute to Lara’s lifestyle?

There have been heaps of awesome moments through the years but I think the one I will never forget is the waterfall rappel stunt from 2011. It was an extremely touristy spot and we had to hop a fence to get to the top of the waterfall in order for me to set up the anchors and rope. This was also my very first descent of the falls, ironically in a Lara costume. All the while, people were watching and taking pictures, and I was extremely nervous about someone calling the police since I didn’t know if it was illegal to abseil from the falls or not, and we had realistic looking toy guns with us that might frighten some people. We managed to accomplish the whole shoot without interruption, however when we went back to the car there was a police officer sitting in his car, so needless to say we left quickly before anything could happen.

Along the same lines, what’s the most exotic location you’ve traveled to?

I’ve been to Malaysia for a base jump event, and snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef.

What about Lara’s physical strength or mental prowess most inspires you? Has this, or your desire to cosplay Lara, influenced your daily life?

Lara Croft seems to have this almost supernatural athletic ability that I have always looked up to and wanted to be more like. When I was competing in sports, specifically in the pole vault, I was very superstitious and sometimes would wear my hair like Lara’s to give me extra encouragement. Lara has given me courage in other aspects of my life as well, including the more risky endeavors including motorcycle riding and skydiving. I figure if Lara can do it, so can I!

Q&A
What first drew you to the Tomb Raider franchise, and what initially inspired you to cosplay as Lara Croft?

My acquaintance with Lara began with Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness. It was one of the first games I played on my computer. From the very first location I felt this mysterious atmosphere. I was interested in the character of Lara, and she has become my ideal woman. I wanted to be as strong, brave, athletic, and educated. One day, I saw a picture of a girl dressed as Lara on the Internet. I was surprised. Despite my young age I decided to try it. I’m not going to hide that it was Jenn Croft and Tiphaine! Due to cosplay I’ve become actively involved in sports.

What Lara Croft costume did you tackle first?

I made winter outfit from Tomb Raider: Legend, in which Lara was in Kazakhstan. Just then it was winter and I had my first real photoshoot.

What is your favorite Lara Croft ensemble?

I really love the classic outfit. Especially, Lara’s mission in Egypt. This ancient atmosphere is unique. Also I really like the plot of Tomb Raider: Legend. I really like myths and legends. In this part of the game had so many incredible locations, which I always promised myself to visit!

What Croft costumes are still on your roster?

There are many costumes I would like to realize. I am dreaming of an underwater photoshoot. I think that would be very interesting! In addition, I would like to complete Tomb Raider 2012’s costume and make photos in similar location. I think that the game will be awesome realistic!

Which Lara costume was the most difficult to construct? Was it due to a particular garment or prop?

I think the Legend costume was most difficult because I made costume completely independently. Before, I’ve done all the costumes with my photographer Alexander Stepanov. He really helped me in my cosplay.

Lara Croft’s lifestyle is full of intrigue and adventure. Do you have any memorable photoshoots or convention appearances that pay tribute to Lara’s lifestyle?

When I was trained for a fan-film (http://youtu.be/XhV6ioQ3udY) I completely felt in the character of Lara. I took physical training, martial arts, acrobatics, practice shooting with a weapon, parkour, and more thanks to my coach Dasha Bogacheva. After that I felt myself stronger. All photoshoots are very memorable for me. There were many funny and dangerous situations. I always try to show the action on photos. Always have to climb up and sometimes it’s dangerous. In one of the photo session I fell from the cliff but nothing happened and I got off a couple of bruises.

Along the same lines, what’s the most exotic location you’ve traveled to?

I’ve been to Egypt and Turkey. I was most impressed with the ancient city Hierapolis, the Greco-Roman city (modern Pamukkale, Turkey). It was fantastic!

What about Lara’s physical strength or mental prowess most inspires you? Has this, or your desire to cosplay Lara, influenced your daily life?

Lara really motivates me. I like soundtracks from different parts of the games. I like to listen it, especially while running. When I take part in sports competitions her image gives me the strength to move forward. It gives me faith in myself. I want to improve my physical shape and develop my acrobatic abilities. I hope that I can do it. All difficulties make us stronger, don’t give up!

Q&A
What first drew you to the Tomb Raider franchise, and what initially inspired you to cosplay as Lara Croft?

When I was a child my parents gave me the book Myths of Ancient Greece. I was crazy about it and about ancient history. I started to study mythology, history, ancient world culture, architecture, and art. I dreamed about adventures and revelations! Then, while at school, my friend gave me a computer game called Tomb Raider. She told me “Try it. I know you’ll like it!” She was absolutely right, and I was amazed and excited! However I started to cosplay as Lara Croft only in 2011. I just suddenly realized that I need it, and, being inspired by my friends, I did my first photo shoot. It was just the very beginning…

What Lara Croft costume did you tackle first?

It was Lara’s classic outfit, because it is the most iconic and one of my favorites.

What is your favorite Lara Croft ensemble?

I really love Antarctic outfit! The costume itself is so bright and colorful with the amazing orange jacket. I also like the gray camouflage pants.

What Croft costumes are still on your roster?

Angel of Darkness. I have already started to make this costume. I hope that soon I’ll have opportunity to share my new photos with you.

Which Lara costume was the most difficult to construct? Was it due to a particular garment or prop?

The catsuit was the most difficult. It was very difficult to make it fit my body like a glove because of specific fabric that we used for it.

Lara Croft’s lifestyle is full of intrigue and adventure. Do you have any memorable photoshoots or convention appearances that pay tribute to Lara’s lifestyle?

My most memorable photoshoot was the Antarctic outfit cosplay that I had in January. It was extremely cold at -20 degrees Celsius. At that time I thought about Lara not being afraid of the cold, even if she wears shorts and tank top in winter!

Along the same lines, what’s the most exotic location you’ve traveled to?

The most exotic location for me was the Far North that I visited this winter. I have never seen deer in their natural conditions of life before; also I had opportunity to meet indigenous peoples and to feel what the real cold is! But the most exciting thing during the North trip was the travel to abandoned districts of Vorkuta city: huge areas of empty ruined houses. I felt like an industrial raider!

What about Lara’s physical strength or mental prowess most inspires you? Has this, or your desire to cosplay Lara, influenced your daily life?

I admire of all her qualities! Lara inspires me to follow my interests in history and to explore something new and interesting during travelling other countries. I think that every girl that likes Lara likes adventures most of all. I think that my love to Lara was one of the factors that inspired me to study culture studies and languages at university (Thank you, Lara). At the same time her perfect physical condition and wonderful acrobatics makes me aspire to reach better results in sport, especially in martial arts. I think that such a strong character like Lara can encourage and inspire people to perfect themselves both physically and mentally.

Q&A
What first drew you to the Tomb Raider franchise, and what initially inspired you to cosplay as Lara Croft?

I discovered Tomb Raider with my best friend Cindy (alias Moncolsplay) in 2004. She played Tomb Raider and it was like love at first sight. I immediately hooked up with the Tomb Raider Franchise. Three years later, we started the Tomb Raider cosplay experience after discovering it on the web.

What Lara Croft costume did you tackle first?

My first Lara Croft costume was the Catsuit from Tomb Raider III because chance willed that I already had everything I needed to create the outfit.

What is your favorite Lara Croft ensemble?

Definitely the classic! Lara Croft without her turquoise blue shirt is not really Lara Croft like Indiana Jones with his hat!

What Croft costumes are still on your roster?

I have few costumes on my roster but I don’t want to talk about it for now. I love surprises…

Which Lara costume was the most difficult to construct? Was it due to a particular garment or prop?

The most difficult costume to construct for me was the classic Legend outfit. The result was never finished so that’s why there are no photos about.

Lara Croft’s lifestyle is full of intrigue and adventure. Do you have any memorable photoshoots or convention appearances that pay tribute to Lara’s lifestyle?

My most memorable photoshoot was the Underworld diving outfit where the stones were sliding and the sea was agitated but photos are wonderful. Also my last photoshoot with Tomb Raider II aviator. You don’t especially see the snow on the photos because it was the beginning of the storm, but my boyfriend and I were on the top of the mountain. A few minutes after our arrival on-site the temperature was suddenly diving. We were frozen and particularly me with my tiny shorts. Lara is crazy to go to a mountain with a such tiny shorts!

Along the same lines, what’s the most exotic location you’ve traveled to?

I live in the south of France and it is a wonderful place because there are several different landscapes so I don’t need to go so far for taking photos.

What about Lara’s physical strength or mental prowess most inspires you? Has this, or your desire to cosplay Lara, influenced your daily life?

For me, Lara has her own way of thinking and many girls or women want it to live a more exciting life. I make often expeditions through the country with my boyfriend. It’s when I’m climbing a mountain or I explore a forest I feel like Lara Croft. When you discover the beauty of nature.

Q&A
What first drew you to the Tomb Raider franchise, and what initially inspired you to cosplay as Lara Croft?

In 1998, my best friend was addicted to the 2nd game, so I decided to buy it to see what the fuss was all about. That’s how I became hooked! A few years later I felt the need to interact with other Tomb Raider fans, and that’s how I discovered the French TR community and its cosplayers. I had wanted to dress as Lara for a long time, but they inspired me to take the leap.

What Lara Croft costume did you tackle first?

Very few people know that, but my first costume was actually the Angel of Darkness outfit, which I wore for the first time in 2006. It was not really accurate so I remade it two years later.

What is your favorite Lara Croft ensemble?

I’m torn between the classic TR outfit and the black catsuit from Legend. The classic outfit is comfortable and it’s Lara’s signature design! And the black catsuit makes you feel sexy. ;)

What Croft costumes are still on your roster?

Lara’s newest outfit from the upcoming game, and then the pink winter outfit from Legend, because I bought the fabric to make the coat ages ago.

Which Lara costume was the most difficult to construct? Was it due to a particular garment or prop?

The Underworld outfit, because it has more details than the others: the backpack was quite a challenge, and the gunbelt/shorts/top practically had to be made from scratch.

Lara Croft’s lifestyle is full of intrigue and adventure. Do you have any memorable photoshoots or convention appearances that pay tribute to Lara’s lifestyle?

I certainly do! Mostly memorable photoshoot moments: I snuck in an abandoned fort to get cool pictures in my Underworld biker outfit, and in various other forbidden places. However, my two-day photoshoot in Thailand was probably the most memorable event: the first day, I put on my Lara gear in the heart of a hot and humid jungle and ran around in heavy boots to shoot a video. The next day, we shot a few pictures on a deserted beach near Koh Phi Phi, and I actually got attacked by a hungry monkey! It grabbed my shoulder while I was eating. Lara photoshoots just aren’t complete without a little adventure.

Along the same lines, what’s the most exotic location you’ve traveled to?

I have traveled a lot (I can’t stay in one place for too long!), but the most exotic locations had to be Phuket and Koh Phi Phi in Thailand, and the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya.

What about Lara’s physical strength or mental prowess most inspires you? Has this, or your desire to cosplay Lara, influenced your daily life?

I have always admired Lara’s extensive knowledge of ancient history, archaeology and languages. She seems to be capable of having a conversation about any subject, which is something I look up to. Of course I also admire her physical abilities, and I plan on training more to be able to do all the flips she can do ;) She’s also one of the reasons why I travel so much: I am passionate about foreign cultures, and I love the sense of adventure you get from exploring a location similar to the ones Lara has visited in the games. So yes, I guess it is true that cosplaying Lara has made my life even more exciting!

Q&A
What first drew you to the Tomb Raider franchise, and what initially inspired you to cosplay as Lara Croft?

I was nine when my friend told me she had received this new awesome game called Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation. In all the excitement she showed the Cleopatra’s palace level and I fell in love with the game. I must have hyped about it to my dad or brother since the next thing I remember was that they had found the first game on sale and bought it for me as a surprise! I was hooked and wanted to play all the others. Soon my friend and I had this little TR club. We made all these lists about the stuff and skills we needed to be Lara and then tried to do all of it. At some point later my mom helped me make the Legend outfit and we did my very first Lara photoshoot. In the summer of 2010 when I was again in my turquoise tank top and brown shorts, usually during summer, my friend said that I should cosplay Lara and go to these conventions and then I was introduced to cosplay. I was so excited and wanted to make a full Anniversary alternate outfit that would be practical and ecological. Later that year I didn’t get in to the school I wanted but I got a job so I had a chance to start a hobby. Because I have always admired gymnasts I knew right away what I wanted to start learning. And here I am now!

What Lara Croft costume did you tackle first?

I remember trying to gather up the first movie outfit as a kid, but also remember not finishing it. So it must be Legend, though my mom helped a lot with that since I had just basic sewing skills then. The first costume I made all by myself is the current Anniversary alternate.

What is your favorite Lara Croft ensemble?

A mix of the*Anniversary*and classic/Legend alternate.

What Croft costumes are still on your roster?

Reborn! I would also love to do a catsuit or the bodysuit by Travis Taddeo, biker, the outfit by Marie Saint Pierre, a wetsuit, and the default Underworld outfit!

Which Lara costume was the most difficult to construct? Was it due to a particular garment or prop?

The Legend winter because it was my first time doing a lot of the parts. Knitting the sweater was an experience!

Lara Croft’s lifestyle is full of intrigue and adventure. Do you have any memorable photoshoots or convention appearances that pay tribute to Lara’s lifestyle?

I’ve loved all my photoshoots! I also remember last summer when Animecon was held at our city and I got to be there all three days. First I wore my South Pacific outfit, then Legend, and lastly the Anniversary alternate. It was a lot of fun, lots of raiding and I got to meet a lot of fans and even my first Lara cosplayers!

Along the same lines, what’s the most exotic location you’ve traveled to?

I wish I could say Thailand, but even though I haven’t been able to afford traveling I got lucky several years ago and my friend and her dad took me with them to China! I’m forever grateful to them for that, it was an amazing experience.

What about Lara’s physical strength or mental prowess most inspires you? Has this, or your desire to cosplay Lara, influenced your daily life?

Lara has been my idol ever since I got to know her! I remember thinking about how there could be such an awesome female character that enjoyed so many things I liked and did so many cool things. Even back then I felt like I could relate to her a bit (being always the one who would do all the crazy stuff, having a long brunette hair in a braid, wearing shorts, loving exploring and hiking) which was of course an amazing feeling. I love her strength, courage, assertiveness, wittiness, attitude and of course all her knowledge and skills. And while being all that awesome she is also very beautiful. Now like my friend said I partly have a Lara lifestyle. I’m living my dream by training and doing all the acrobatics, gymnastics and tricking, sometimes a bit of climbing, martial arts and hiking too. I love listening to the games’ music, and most of my clothes are Lara’s style. I have a good reason to not cut my hair too short too!

Croft Couture #7: Shona

The Tomb Raider fandom is full of talented artists, entertainers, and perhaps most notably, phenomenal cosplay talent. “Croft Couture” aims to showcase these lovely and dedicated ladies, and give Lara costumers a spot to share their experiences while dressed as gaming’s leading lady.*

Like many of our recent Croft Couture candidates, cosplayer Shona isn’t afraid to get physical while in costume. Stunts, acrobatics, and handpicked locations make her photos that much more genuine. Fellow Croft Couture cosplayer Jenn Croft (http://officialtombraiderblog.tumblr.com/post/19405102475/croft-couture-1-jenn-croft-the-tomb-raider) can be seen in some of the photos above, taking on Shona as the infamous Doppelganger. Q&A
What first drew you to the Tomb Raider franchise, and what initially inspired you to cosplay as Lara Croft?

The character of Lara Croft herself is what really attracted me to the series. I grew up playing video games, and adventure games have always been my favourite genre, so I’m sure I would have been interested in Tomb Raider regardless of who the main character was. However I heard a lot about Lara before I even played the games because she became such a media sensation. I’ve always admired strong women, and the idea of a female character having adventures and kicking butt definitely interested me. It was actually my mother who first suggested dressing up as Lara for a school costume party. Needless to say the idea of bringing one of my favourite characters to life sounded like a lot of fun!

What Lara Croft costume did you tackle first?

The classic outfit. At the time it was Lara’s main outfit in all of the games.

What is your favorite Lara Croft ensemble?

The classic outfit will always be dear to me, but I really like the Underworld one because it has a more sporty look. It also appears more practical, with the extra hooks and pouches etc, although when I constructed it I found that some elements (such as the backpack) weren’t as practical as they looked!

What Croft costumes are still on your roster?

Many of them, to be honest! There are some that I’ve done that I’d like to re-do, and many more that I would really like to make. The nice thing about Lara costuming is that once you’ve made some of the accessories, it’s quite easy to use them with several outfits, especially outfits from the same game. With each outfit that I make I try to improve, and I plan to continue for as long as I can. This year I’ll definitely be focused on the upcoming game, Tomb Raider. I’ve made some improvements to my costume that I haven’t had a chance to wear yet.

Which Lara costume was the most difficult to construct? Was it due to a particular garment or prop?

Overall, I haven’t had too much trouble with any particular costume. The holsters are usually my least favourite part. Partly because the very first pair I made fell apart quite quickly, so I’m always worried about making them robust enough to survive outdoor adventures as well as numerous bumps and jolts at conventions. And partly because I want to ensure the holsters sit correctly when attached to the gun belt and leg straps and that everything is the right size.

Lara Croft’s lifestyle is full of intrigue and adventure. Do you have any memorable photoshoots or convention appearances that pay tribute to Lara’s lifestyle?

I’ve only started doing photoshoots in the costumes fairly recently, but this is by far my favorite way to bring Lara to life. Conventions are a lot of fun and I love the social side of them, but most of the time you’re standing around posing in the outfit. I’ve traveled to attend a few conventions and that’s probably more like Lara than the posing part! I love getting into the costume and heading out to do things that Lara would actually do in real life. When I’m doing things like climbing, abseiling or exploring in the costume I definitely feel like I’m wearing her boots.

Along the same lines, what’s the most exotic location you’ve traveled to?

I’m really lucky to have a job that allows me to travel, and I’ve had opportunities to live in and visit some amazing and beautiful places. It’s actually hard to choose one location, but I’d say that Japan is the most exotic place I’ve lived in. It was the first country I visited outside of Australia, and I’ve lived there for nearly a year in total. The culture is so different, the cities feel like another world and it was my first experience trying to communicate in a language I didn’t know very well.

What about Lara’s physical strength or mental prowess most inspires you? Has this, or your desire to cosplay Lara, influenced your daily life?

Lara defintely inspires me in many areas of my life. She encourages my sense of adventure and my love of travel. I enjoy keeping fit and healthy normally, but I’m only human and so she’s a pretty good motivator when I’m feeling tired or lazy halfway through a workout. For me, being in good physical shape is as much a part of cosplaying Lara as wearing the backpack and gun belt. I feel most like Lara when I’m feeling fit and strong. I like knowing that I can pull out some crazy Lara moves on a photoshoot if I want to.

Q&A
What first drew you to the Tomb Raider franchise, and what initially inspired you to cosplay as Lara Croft?

Back in 1998 I found an article about Tomb Raider 3 in an computer magazine from my brother. The game and especially Lara looked interesting to me…this way I came to play Tomb Raider for the first time. I loved the game, because it was so exciting and atmospheric. Lara became my girlhood idol, cause she is sexy, intelligent, tough, athletic, cultured, well travelled and has this kind of mysterious charm.

What Lara Croft costume did you tackle first?

I started with Lara‘s classic costume, the combination of the greenish tank-top and brown shorts, cause it‘s still the most recognizable one.

What is your favorite Lara Croft ensemble?

I think it‘s her main outfit from Tomb Raider Underworld, because this I did mostly every part by myself and it was very detailed. Also I wore it the most time in photoshoots and on conventions. I associate many amazing memories and feelings with it.

What Croft costumes are still on your roster?

Lara‘s new reborn outfit, but I won‘t do it until the new game comes out. And then there‘s the black dress she wore in Tomb Raider Legend on my to-do list, too.

Which Lara costume was the most difficult to construct? Was it due to a particular garment or prop?

Lara’s wetsuit from Tomb Raider Underworld was really hard to do, especially the part with the zipper. I had never done something like this before and so I needed the help of my mother. She gave me a sewing-machine-crash-course.

Lara Croft’s lifestyle is full of intrigue and adventure. Do you have any memorable photoshoots or convention appearances that pay tribute to Lara’s lifestyle?

One of my photoshoots took place in old ruined sanatorium. It was such a creepy place! Really, you don‘t wanted to be there alone. I thought every second could come an evil creature out of the dark, so I was glad about having my pistols with me. I felt like I would really need them to protect myself.

Along the same lines, what’s the most exotic location you’ve traveled to?

Unfortunately I haven‘t visit many exciting locations so far, so the most exotic one was Key West in Florida. The endless beaches and islands reminded me of Tomb Raider 3 South Pacific Islands. I wish I had taken my cosplay gear with me for taking some pictures there…

What about Lara’s physical strength or mental prowess most inspires you? Has this, or your desire to cosplay Lara, influenced your daily life?

It influenced my life indeed! Lara is a great motivation for me in every way and made me to do a lot more sports than before, for example I began rock climbing. It is so much fun, and the feeling of being on an adventure is beyond all description.

Q&A
What first drew you to the Tomb Raider franchise, and what initially inspired you to cosplay as Lara Croft?

The news about the Tomb Raider movie made me curious about the game, and when I found a demo on an old CD for PC I finally meet Lara. I guess that everyone knows the expression “love at the first sight,” Which was exactly what happened to me! When I was falling in love with the game I started to look for information, and I also found lots of pictures of girls dressed as Lara. At that time I didn’t know what it was, but at that moment I wanted to cosplay Lara Croft! I always wanted to become her and this was that hobby that would make my dream come true. I start to look for information about the cosplay in my country to know if it would be possible to realize, and then started to think about what to do. I let time pass so my hair could grow together with my courage.

What Lara Croft costume did you tackle first?

Tomb Raider Underworld (shorts). I chose this one because I really like it, and also I was playing TRU at that time!

What is your favorite Lara Croft ensemble?

I love the TRU costume because it makes me feel more like Lara, maybe because it was my first costume.

What Croft costumes are still on your roster?

All that I didn’t make yet! I’m about to finish the TRU wetsuit, but I really want to finish the classic one and also the catsuit

Which Lara costume was the most difficult to construct? Was it due to a particular garment or prop?

Tomb Raider Underworld for sure! It wasn’t just because of the props itself, it was also because I didn’t know how to sew and even how I would make all that stuff – that’s why I had some help for the sewing part. I like to say that there was a Jessica before and after the TRU costume, because I learned so much that now I make all my costumes by myself (even sewing by hand).

Lara Croft’s lifestyle is full of intrigue and adventure. Do you have any memorable photoshoots or convention appearances that pay tribute to Lara’s lifestyle?

Intrigue! Yes, it’s always present! But lets talk about better things…My first photoshoot was at an art school/park in Rio de Janeiro, it is just below the Redentor Christ. We chose the location to get some of the original jungle of our city, and there I saw some wild animals like apes, and we entered an amazing cave that I would never imagine existed! That was, for me, a little bit of Lara’s adventure feeling….The discovery! Also, once at a game convention, I was walking dressed like Lara and suddenly a young girl stopped in front of me and wasn’t even breathing. She was a big fan of Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider games, and she was almost crying and her hands were shaking as she came to take a picture with me. That was amazing for me! It showed me that I was on the right track, not just the cosplay itself, but that I had become Lara in essence.

Along the same lines, what’s the most exotic location you’ve traveled to?

Once I went to Fortaleza, another state in Brazil, and there were amazing beaches and historical places. But I just stayed there for a few days, so I couldn’t explore too much.

What about Lara’s physical strength or mental prowess most inspires you? Has this, or your desire to cosplay Lara, influenced your daily life?

Lara is the most amazing woman I’ve ever met! She is smart, strong, and sexy, what more can I say? She does things that I always wanted to do…travel the world, speak lots of languages, find relics, and discover new and magical places! For sure something that was a child dream for me is speaking all the languages of the world, so when I was visiting a country I could speak their own language. So today I’m finishing college and the course I’m making is Languages – it’s just the first step to keep learning other languages.

Also, Lara was one of my inspirations for lose weight. In my teenage years I was an overweight girl and didn’t have many healthy habits. Admiring Lara inspired me to go to the gym, play sports, and eat better. It wasn’t the body that I was looking to achieve, but was a healthy life! The body was just an amazing consequence!

Q&A
What first drew you to the Tomb Raider franchise, and what initially inspired you to cosplay as Lara Croft?

My mother bought me a Wii console and Tomb Raider Anniversary for Christmas in 2007. After I finished playing the game I went and bought Legend and Underworld. I really liked Legend, but I wasn’t really pleased with Underworld. I was really drawn to cosplay after I looked up Tomb Raider images and came across Jenn Croft and many other awesome TR Cosplayer who I thought were TR models.

What Lara Croft costume did you tackle first?

Either Legend or Anniversary. I’m not sure which one I started first!

What is your favorite Lara Croft ensemble?

Even though I really didn’t care much for Underworld I absolutely loved Lara’s backback, gun, holsters, and kick-ass boots!

What Croft costumes are still on your roster?

As of right now, I am finishing off the reconstruction of my Legend costume. Other than that, I don’t have any plans for other future Croft costumes.

Which Lara costume was the most difficult to construct? Was it due to a particular garment or prop?

Lara’s underworld outfit for sure! I bought several outfits that were similar to hers and altered those and I just couldn’t get it the way I wanted. After retrying to sew mesh and dying the clothes brown, I would end up somehow ruining them and would have to purchase new ones. I did that a few times till I got tired of blowing money and trying to “perfect” the outfit.

Lara Croft’s lifestyle is full of intrigue and adventure. Do you have any memorable photoshoots or convention appearances that pay tribute to Lara’s lifestyle?

I’ve never gone to any of the conventions, but just dressing up as Lara and having the photos of me portraying her is enough tribute for me.

Along the same lines, what’s the most exotic location you’ve traveled to?

I never have been to another country other than Canada, but I have been to Florida and Hawaii. I do plan on visiting other countries in the future.

What about Lara’s physical strength or mental prowess most inspires you? Has this, or your desire to cosplay Lara, influenced your daily life?

Lara has ambitions that I think we would all love to share. She never stops till she gets what she wants and she achieves it every time. Cosplaying Lara had been such a wonderful experience for me. I have met new friends in other countries, who are on DA and they are wonderful! I have the desire to better my physical and mental strength. It just feels like when I wear Lara’s outfits she is being brought into the real world and can tell what it’s all about.

Q&A
What first drew you to the Tomb Raider franchise, and what initially inspired you to cosplay as Lara Croft?

I had always admired Lara since I was a small and first saw it. Who does not admire a woman so beautiful, so smart, and so strong as she? Since I was little, I liked to emulate her. It was not until years later when I decided to dress up for the first time. Lara is a strong woman and independent. Live your life to the limit. Travel, jump, shoot, enjoy…She is wonderful, awesome.

What Lara Croft costume did you tackle first?

Classic Lara. I always wanted to dress as Lara, but it was not until I was comfortable with my body. I had weight problems; I was a girl very VERY “strong” (laughs). Lara helped me to fight for something I wanted. And when I got it, I felt ready to take the plunge. I remember the first time I looked in the mirror dressed as Lara. I cried. It was very special to me.

What is your favorite Lara Croft ensemble?

The Tomb Raider: Legend outfit. I remember that photo shoot with special affection. I met what would become one of my best friends and now photographer Jonathan Duran. This cosplay opened the door to recognition of my work. Although I also remember fondly my first costume, the classic, and the photos that I did that day. It was a prologue to what would come next. I must pick the Underworld suit. With that costume I made one of the most important events. People knew me and it opened several doors.

What Croft costumes are still on your roster?

The outfit of the new Lara Croft. I have everything ready; it only remains to take the plunge.

Which Lara costume was the most difficult to construct? Was it due to a particular garment or prop?

The suit of the new Lara Croft. It has been difficult to create the accessories.

Lara Croft’s lifestyle is full of intrigue and adventure. Do you have any memorable photoshoots or convention appearances that pay tribute to Lara’s lifestyle?

I truly felt like Lara at the photoshoot of Tomb Raider: Legend. Jonathan Duran knows how to create a wonderful climate, and people took photos of me nonstop. It was great. I also felt like Lara at “Gamefest,” a very famous videogame event here in Spain. The press recorded me, interviewed me, I went in magazines…It was amazing! Those were the two most special times I felt like Lara.

Along the same lines, what’s the most exotic location you’ve traveled to?

Unfortunately I could not travel outside Spain yet. I hope to soon! But here in Spain we have hidden places that are wonderful, exotic, and mysterious…A delight for any adventurer! I invite you to come and discover them!

What about Lara’s physical strength or mental prowess most inspires you? Has this, or your desire to cosplay Lara, influenced your daily life?

Of course! As I said before, Lara helped me take an important step in my life. I started exercising and eating a healthy diet. Lara has been a wonderful gift in my life, a source of inspiration. She helped me to be a new girl. Lara is like my big sister!

Croft Couture #12: Tyalis

The Tomb Raider fandom is full of talented artists, entertainers, and perhaps most notably, phenomenal cosplay talent. “Croft Couture” aims to showcase these lovely and dedicated ladies, and give Lara costumers a spot to share their experiences while dressed as gaming’s leading lady.*

I apologize in the delay in posting this Croft Couture – traveling about Germany kept me from properly updating last week! When I first spied Swiss cosplayer Tyalis it was actually due to her wonderful Witchblade costume (http://tyalis-photo.deviantart.com/gallery/23688344#/d2am00h), a character familiar to most Lara fans that ventured deeper into the Top Cow comic universe. Her eclectic Lara costumes were icing on the cake after that. As always, photos above, interview below!

Q&A
What first drew you to the Tomb Raider franchise, and what initially inspired you to cosplay as Lara Croft?

When I was a child, I loved watching my father play video games. One day he bought home the first Tomb Raider on PC. I had no right to play, but I helped him to solve puzzles. So the first Tomb Raider I played was the second one. I liked the game at once because it’s a dream for me to discover some abandoned places as in the game. Years later I chose to make a Lara Croft costume for a birthday party. When I looked for information to help me to make it, I discovered cosplay. I liked the principle of making a character alive and to embody it, especially Lara.

What Lara Croft costume did you tackle first?

It was a kind of classic outfit. When I did this costume it was the most popular outfit. The costume wasn’t exact, but a lot of people recognized the character! So I remade it better.

What is your favorite Lara Croft ensemble?

I love the classic outfit, because for me it’s the outfit which represents Lara the most! But I prefer to wear the Underworld outfit; I find it more practical and realistic.

What Croft costumes are still on your roster?

I need to do photoshoots for the Pacific outfit and for the Underworld Jan Mayen Island outfit. Otherwise I will work on making the first movie outfit and I want to make the Doppelganger. But I need to finish other cosplay before!?

Which Lara costume was the most difficult to construct? Was it due to a particular garment or prop?

I think the holsters and the bag from the movie outfit. It’s hard to make holsters like the movie, and make sure the pistols are maintained well on it. At the moment I don’t know how I will do the bag, but I don’t want to buy it!

Lara Croft’s lifestyle is full of intrigue and adventure. Do you have any memorable photoshoots or convention appearances that pay tribute to Lara’s lifestyle?

It was for the Legend outfit photoshoot. The photoshoot was last November and the weather was very cold and wet (After the photoshoot I was frozen!). The location is a cave with ice all year long, situated in the middle of the forest and it’s necessary to walk on a mountain path to go there. In the cave it was really necessary to be careful because wooden ladder and the ground were very slippery. It was a little dangerous because the bottom of the cave is in -20 meters and there are 5 meters between platforms.

Along the same lines, what’s the most exotic location you’ve traveled to?

I can’t call that an exotic location but my most far destination was for a trip on the Rocky Mountain between Vancouver and Calgary. I liked discovering this wild region! Otherwise I have seen some famous archeological place in Europe like Roma or Pompeii.

What about Lara’s physical strength or mental prowess most inspires you? Has this, or your desire to cosplay Lara, influenced your daily life?

O I love Lara’s character because she’s a strong and brave woman and maybe she influences me unconsciously. I always aim to be independent and be able to defend myself. I did some combat sport, like Karate or Jiu-jitsu and I do shooting (with a rifle not with guns and I shoot only cardboards targets!). Otherwise I choose to work with historical and archeological objects. Sometime I feel like her when I discover some forgotten treasures in museums reserves!

Q&A

What first drew you to the Tomb Raider franchise, and what initially inspired you to cosplay as Lara Croft?

I was visiting my grandparents during the holidays in 1999 back in Algeria, and my cousins were there too. They were playing Tomb Raider on their PC and I was mesmerized. This was a female lead, and she seemed to be an incredible athlete, with great abilities. I was instantly hooked and never left the computer the rest of my time there. Strong females were unheard of in Algeria, damsels in distress was what i was used to in that country. So it was love at first sight with Lara.

Years later when we immigrated to England, We got internet, and i was finally connected to the rest of the world. I started talking people on myspace with the same interest, One day a friend mentioned cosplaying to me. I had no idea what it was. After she sent me a few photos of girls in Lara costumes, i was again hooked forever. I took apart an old backpack for its webbing, straps and buckles, turned a black t-shirt into one without sleeves, cut my cargo pants into shorts. can you guess what for? Yes it was my attempt at AOD shorts outfit, my mom was the only one that knew, i was afraid to show my dad, but that’s when i started my website and connected with people with the same hobby.

What Lara Croft costume did you tackle first?

It was Angel of Darkness, the short shorts outfit, I remember thinking it was probably very easy to construct.

What is your favorite Lara Croft ensemble?

Tomb Raider Underworld for sure, I loved every single aspect of that costume, and I felt very confident in it, I always had issues with my arms and tummy, and I felt good about wearing it as the reaction from people was very positive. The backpack is my favorite piece, I love that it’s secured across the chest and the belt impressed me too.

What Croft costumes are still on your roster?

I want to do Tomb Raider 2013 Sure-shot outfit, Tomb Raider Legend Biker no jacket and Tomb Raider 3 south pacific outfit, but the need for cosplaying takes over me like a demon possessing me so I might make a costume out of nowhere :)

Which Lara costume was the most difficult to construct? Was it due to a particular garment or prop?

The competition bow for sure, for Tomb Raider 2013, I had never attempted to make anything like it before, and let alone make it out of foam. and the most challenging part was to draw it and cut it out, I was pleasantly surprised when i was done and to have it functional was even better!

Lara Croft’s lifestyle is full of intrigue and adventure. Do you have any memorable photoshoots or convention appearances that pay tribute to Lara’s lifestyle?

For that tiger/tree picture, We canoed to a near by island on my friend’s lake, it was about a quarter mile away so it was quite a stretch, on the way I could not help thinking of Lara in that rowboat in TR3.

Along the same lines, what’s the most exotic location you’ve traveled to?

Unfortunately i don’t really have means to travel anywhere special, the best location I’ve been to was a small island in a lake in Maine, North East USA.

What about Lara’s physical strength or mental prowess most inspires you? Has this, or your desire to cosplay Lara, influenced your daily life?

There are three ways in which Lara changed my life or helped me deal with fears, one was helping me keep an eye on my health, I always remind myself of cosplay when i want that second helping of ice cream, the second, is when we were getting ready to move to England and i was scared, reminding myself of Lara’s fearlessness and courage helped me prepare for that seismic life change. Finally moving to the United States to meet my husband of 5 years now was also largely due to having the “I’m ready for anything” attitude thanks to Lara. :)

Q&A
What first drew you to the Tomb Raider franchise, and what initially inspired you to cosplay as Lara Croft?

I was first drawn to Tomb Raider because Lara Croft is such a strong female character. Especially now that we know her back story, I think she’s one of the best female video game characters to have ever been written. There is so much enjoyment in stepping in her shoes and kicking ass. What was your very first Lara Croft costume?

My first Lara Croft costume was a “work appropriate” version of Tomb Raider Underworld, which meant jeans and no crop top. I was running a tea shop at the time and had to stay within modest attire, but people got the idea and loved it all the same. What’s been your favorite Lara Croft costume?

Tomb Raider reborn. Aside from loving the tanks and cargo pants, all her accessories and weapons are so much fun to wear. Her outfit and gear can make anyone feel like a force to be reckoned with.Do you plan to make any additional Lara Croft costumes in the future?

Yes, I’m currently fine tuning my two ROTTR outfits, accessories, and weapons. Almost done!Which Lara costume or prop was the most difficult to construct? Any lessons learned you’d like to share?

The ice axe! I own the real axe, but knew I wanted to recreate a convention friendly prop for myself and for others. In order to do this I teamed up with a fellow cosplayer to make the silicone mold, but the casting process is still very difficult and time consuming. First, you have to properly mix your resin ingredients and wait for them to set within the mold. Next, there is quite of bit of sawing, drilling, sanding, and painting. I learned how important proper measurements are. If you only think you have enough resin mixture for the entire mold, you better make sure, otherwise you’ve got potential of wasting an entire batch. Also, you need to be comfortable working quickly as well as precisely because the resin begins to set in just a couple minutes. *Lara Croft’s lifestyle is full of intrigue and adventure. Do you have any memorable photoshoots or convention appearances that pay tribute to Lara’s lifestyle? Have you traveled anywhere exotic that made you feel like a fellow adventurer? *

I’m surrounded by beauty in Greenville, SC and so I used different locations within my home town for my first professional photo shoot as Reborn Lara. Boneyard Beach in Charleston, SC was a spot my photographer chose and we got a couple amazing shots with the waves crashing behind me! I recently visited The Biltmore House in Asheville, NC as well as Chichen Itza (Mayan Ruins) in Mexico. Both locations are full of history and wonder and had me feeling a bit like an adventuring explorer myself. What about Lara’s physical strength or mental prowess most inspires you? Has this, or your desire to cosplay Lara, influenced your daily life?

Even though the latest Tomb Raider game is much more relatable and believable, her physical strength and endurance cannot be matched. However, I really enjoy working out and staying fit and find that Lara is sometimes lurking in the back of my mind encouraging me.*I also find myself thinking of Lara anytime I participate in an activity that gives me an adrenaline rush, such as zip lining or white water rafting.

Q&A
What first drew you to the Tomb Raider franchise, and what initially inspired you to cosplay as Lara Croft?

I met Lara when I was 7 or 8 years old, playing Tomb Raider II on PlayStation 1. At this time, I fell in love with Lara Croft. Before, I did not know what cosplay was, but when I learned through friends what it was, I decided to try to cosplay Lara. My first costume was the Tomb Raider Chronicles Dress - the simplest of Lara’s costumes.*What was your very first Lara Croft costume?

My first costume was Tomb Raider Chronicles (Dress). It was my first cosplay and it was interesting to try on the image of Lara. What’s been your favorite Lara Croft costume?

Tomb Raider Chronicles (*camouflage ). I wanted to make this costume and I did. For the future, I want to find good places for photo sessions, for example, in the game, there is a submarine. Do you plan to make any additional Lara Croft costumes in the future?

Yes, I want to make Tomb Raider: Underworld (wetsuit) and Tomb Raider Chronicles (Catsuit). There’s so much that I want to do.Which Lara costume or prop was the most difficult to construct? Any lessons learned you’d like to share?

Reborn was hard. I spent a lot of time to make the full suit (pants, shirt, holsters and quiver). Thanks to my husband, he helped me to make a bow and an ice axe.*Do you have any memorable photoshoots or convention appearances that pay tribute to Lara’s lifestyle? What first drew you to the Tomb Raider franchise, and what initially inspired you to cosplay as Lara Croft?

I’m very much interested in adventure games. I was attracted by the mysterious aspect of Lara Croft. Her strength and charisma are an example for me. I was seduced by the various exotic spots like Thaïland, Egypt,…
As I said before, I was inspired by the raider side of Lara Croft, so I decided to disguise myself as Lara and shared the pictures on Twitter. The positive reactions encouraged me to go on with other cosplays. What was your very first Lara Croft costume?

It was a mix of various costumes. In fact, I put a t-shirt and short with boots, sun glasses and holding a gun. My first official cosplay was the Underworld cosplay. What’s been your favorite Lara Croft costume?

Up to now, it’s the Legend cosplay.Do you plan to make any additional Lara Croft costumes in the future?

Yes. In fact, I am about to finish the Anniversary cosplay.Which Lara costume or prop was the most difficult to construct? Any lessons learned you’d like to share?

The Underworld cosplay took me some time. It was my very first cosplay so I was careful selecting the right fabric and I was rather “newbie”. Now, I feel more at ease!Lara Croft’s lifestyle is full of intrigue and adventure. Do you have any memorable photoshoots or convention appearances that pay tribute to Lara’s lifestyle? Have you traveled anywhere exotic that made you feel like a fellow adventurer? *

Yes, I have some photoshoots and appearances paying tribute to Lara’s lifestyle. I spent Summer 2014 in Greece- Paros Island-, sailing on, and diving in a crystal sea surrounded by *undersea cave… I felt very much like a fellow adventurer. What about Lara’s physical strength or mental prowess most inspires you? Has this, or your desire to cosplay Lara, influenced your daily life?

To my view, she is the perfect woman -physically and mentally-, so I would love to identify myself with her. In some real life situations I am faced with, I wonder what Lara would do…

Q&A
What firstdrew you to the Tomb Raider franchise, and what initially inspired you tocosplay as Lara Croft?

I was around 7 or 8 years old and I went to an electronicstore where my father used to visit due to his former job. I was waiting in thecar and that same week he bought the original PlayStation and when I came back hebought me a gift from the store owner: it was the original Tomb Raider. I fell in love with Lara immediately for some reason as soon as I saw her in the cover. However, it wasn’t until late 2012 or early 2013 when I felt the need ofcosplay her. The way she was portrayed in the reboot completely touched me deepand I wanted to show my passion and love for the franchise in a way I never didbefore.

What was yourvery first Lara Croft costume?

It was the reboot one. I had similar clothing and the Dr. Dre Beats*earphones like in the first CGI trailer so I thought it would be nice to try towear it on a proper way to make them look a-la Croft.
What’s beenyour favorite Lara Croft costume?

Hard question, but I will choose the one she uses in TR3in the South Pacific. I simply love it.
Do you planto make any additional Lara Croft costumes in the future?

Yes! I found it highly challenging try to look a lot likeLara Croft being a male cosplayer, especially the classic ones. There is somesort of empowering feeling when you see yourself looking like the one youadmire since you’re a kid.
Which Laracostume or prop was the most difficult to construct? Any lessons learned you’dlike to share?

Definitely the classic one. It is so iconic that wearingthat for a guy is not easy task, but it is harder to get the right material tomake it. I found myself sewing and cutting and taking measurements for modelsand since I never did that before it became quite a challenge. It’s not doneyet, but as you can see on the pictures I am on the right way, or at least I try, which is the best. My advice ishave fun, you don’t need to be an expert, but whatever you do, do it withconviction and passion and wear it proudly, because it’s all about that. Thedifference between a good or a bad cosplay is the process, and you know it’sgood when you had fun doing it!
Lara Croft’slifestyle is full of intrigue and adventure. Do you have any memorablephotoshoots or convention appearances that pay tribute to Lara’s lifestyle?Have you traveled anywhere exotic that made you feel like a fellow adventurer? *

I’ve never been on a convention or met any other TombRaider fan sadly, however I am what I call a silent mega-fan, because I am notthe kind of fan who wears t-shirts with Lara or TR logos on it, or has tattoosor memorabilia, but instead I felt so connected to during so many years I endup doing what she does, wearing as she wears and risk to say thinking what shethinks. Last year, for example, I’ve lived 4 months on board of a Cruiseworking all across North Europe because I wanted to feel what Lara felt being acrew member. Sea is the cradle of heroes and I knew it was going to be helpfulto paid my studies and make me grew up as a person, and it did. It was mytribute to Ernest Shackleton as well due to the 100th anniversary ofhis renamed expedition. It was meant to be.
What about Lara’s physical strength or mental prowess most inspiresyou? Has this, or your desire to cosplay Lara, influenced your daily life?

Lara is inspiring in many ways for me. I used to see Laraas someone who built a big wall between the world and herself, and I alwaysfelt intrigued by this apparent cold surrounding her. Her Manor was a clearmetaphor of her own, a magnificent fortification filled with beautiful thingsbut away from everyone and with many rooms, yet they were all locked. The reboot proved me right and I think now people can understand why Lara was the way she is. Her ability to move forward despite all the challenges and carry on no matter what Is my biggestinspiration. On other hand, I have done from gymnastics in 2008 to archery lastyear, and I am surprisingly good at them! I recently bought my first recurve bow soI can practice daily at home and I have plans to add it to the cosplay gadgetsas well.
