Edit: before, this was the announcement thread for forum comp #3, but now it's a general thread for forum announcements/feedback/questions/suggestions.

Feel free to use this thread to give the forum staff suggestions on features for the forum, ideas for competitions, questions for the moderating staff, etc.

---

My first order of business is giving you guys a little heads up that we will soon have a competition and that you guys need to keep your eyes peeled on this forum during the next few days!

Because this time, the competition will run for a shorter length of time compared to the last one and it may just be first come, first served.

What will the competition be about? Stay tuned and watch this space...

But I can promise you, it will be FUN!

...and so will be the prizes :naughty:

As per the rules, our competitions will always be "no purchase necessary". What you win, you receive absolutely for free from Crystal Dynamics. Not even necessary to pay for the (sometimes expensive!) postage costs :)

I'm working on a draft of the new comp rules and details as we speak.

Driber
2nd Nov 2011, 11:41
Sorry guys, it's taking a few days more than initially planned.

It looks like this one might be another big comp just like the last one (and by big I more mean "elaborate", not big as in allowing unlimited entries and ending up with 310, haha) and we'd like this to reflect in the prizes, so we're still sorting out some of those details.

But to make up for the unplanned additional wait, I will reveal a few little details about the comp :naughty:

- We'll probably have prizes for 1st, 2nd AND 3rd place this time around. On top of that, every single winner will probably receive a SET of prizes (meaning, multiple items).

- First prize will contain something exclusive.

- It has been speculated/requested that the prizes contain something from the upcoming Tomb Raider 15-Year Celebration Nerd Machine (http://www.thenerdmachine.com/) merchandise. This is something I can......................confirm ;)

I have a feeling Driber has something else on mind :D

Yes, I do indeed. And I'm going to keep my lips stiff until the comp thread has been posted ;)

But suggestions for comps are always welcome. Feel free to post ideas, folks!

Well, in one of the previous comps I already hinted that we may have a poetry contest at one point or another.

And I have definitely not forgotten about it; it's on my list of comp ideas. But not this time around, sorry.

I know there are several ways to do it right, Driber. I just can't entirely recall what any of them are off the top of my head. 6-7-6 was close enough :D

It's been a very long time since I wrote any Haikyu. Might even have been way back in school, which is more years than I care to think about... Was quite pleased the knack hasn't entirely deserted me, though :)

Heads up, everyone! The Nerd Machine merchandise has just been released, so I'm just doing the finishing touches on the competition thread and it's about to go LIVE!

FYI, this time I would like everyone to upload their entry using my own image host via a special link.

I specifically coded this image host script just for these competitions, to:

- Ensure that images will always stay online, as some image hosts go down after a while, leaving the image links on the forum broken.

- Make sure the posted images are web friendly (not excessively large). The script automatically resizes all images to max 720 pixels wide. This is to prevent the forum layout from distorting on monitors with a lower resolution. It also makes the pages load faster. The original images are preserved on my server, in case they are necessary.

- Make the organizing of these competitions a lot less time consuming for me and for those will be judging/voting on the entries. All images will be nicely put in 1 separate folder on my server, which I then in the end will use to gather all the entries, so I don't have to go through every single thread page again and manually collect all the images like I had to do the last time with 310 caption entries

Coming soon...

Interesting. Can you elaborate?

I was thinking about something Lara would write down in her diary, since she is a young girl with not that much kind of experience with the whole tomb raider yet. She should have some great stories happening to her on the island i guess she could find a paper and ink somewhere and write a diary.

so why net let people write some diary pieces, or experienced story where she plays a leading role, the devs could pick out some of the best stories..

Yeah, sorry about that.

I made a mental note about your trip, though. So should you win, I'll make sure that the prizes stay reserved for when you're back.

Will you really be completely off the grid, though? Like, not even popping into an internet café once in a while to check email?

2kool4u
26th Nov 2011, 17:46
It's pretty funny. I think in order to make it a life changing experience they sort of limited the internet on the ship itself. After we use up a certain amount of internet they start charging ridiculous amounts. Ex. 10 minutes would be like 30 bucks or something. I'll try to get on here and there but i think i'll be mainly rushing trying to get an email out to my family that i'm alright  I should be making a blog or something so i'll definitely let you know! I can type on the boat and then quickly upload it when i get the chance. Thanks for remembering though :D

I have a competition idea: What about we each have one entry to write Lara's new signature and post it and the one with the most votes via members of the forum or CD is officially Lara's new signature? I think it's a good competition and an amazing prize to know that you created something that's part of the new Lara's personality...

Driber
7th Dec 2011, 14:08
Sounds like a nice idea :thumb:

Though I'm not sure if CD is still supporting Lara's "real" sig anymore. I'd expect that that aspect died along with the cancellation of the real life models.

I'll check with Meagan if I'm right or wrong about this :)

LadyRufina
8th Dec 2011, 17:02
^ I was certain that her signature won't be used as much for merchandise anymore but still, the odd bit of merchandise and scenes in the games that would make it relevant would still be a very nice prize for the winner. Any answer from Meagan yet?

Driber
8th Dec 2011, 21:03
^ Yup. As I though, the "real" Lara sig is out. Sorry.

It was a nice comp idea, though. And suggestions are always welcome :)

Although I've got a fairly large list of comp ideas already and we're probably booked for at least half a year :D I love hearing everyone's ideas for possible future comps! If there's a really good idea out there, we might just give it priority :naughty:

I've just finished another little forum improvement.

Remember our old tags? They were dark blue blocks with invisible text and you had to highlight that block in order to read the hidden text.

They served their purpose well for many years, but compared to today's standards, they've become a bit dated. And compared to modern forum software, they were a bit cumbersome to work with (had to manually drag a box around it, plus it was also a bit hard to read the text like that).

Now they work much easier and look a lot more fancy :)

We've just released another new forum bb code:

This one will probably mostly be used by mods, but anyone who's interested in creating nicely organized threads, can also use it.

This bb code is similar to the earlier mentioned SPOILER code, but it also allows for adding some subject text next to the show/hide button.

Here's an example of an FAQ item.

Here's how it works:

Well, I myself spent a full evening getting the FAQ code to work and look the way it does plus converting all the FAQ items into the appropriate bb code formatting. But I bet it took Meagan a whole lot more time to write out all those individual FAQ items, transcribing them from the podcasts, verifying, double checking, etc.

*Applause to our very hands-on Community Manager* :)

yes indeed, great work and many thanks to everyone who helped doing it, and thanks to the twitter guys for always keeping me up-to-date with the new news

On the other hand there is one thing that is really heart breaking

When will we see the next Legacy of Kain game?

KS: “I can’t answer that because we’re not working on a Legacy of Kain game. The studio is focused on our three projects at the moment. One is Tomb Raider as you know, and the other two are new IP. Again, we’re not working on a Legacy of Kain game here at Crystal Dynamics.”

That really left a deep mark on my heart that may never heal :(

I did some work on the [ spoil ] bb code.

It now has a description that it's a spoiler block, plus you no longer need to highlight it to see the hidden text; you can just hover over it with your mouse.

Highlighting still works, though.

Example: I have a confession to make. I have murdered a man in my dream last night and then I woke up and made me some coffee.

I see they finally corrected the forums with a fixed width center column, and not that stretch to screen we've had for a few months. Which made reading so unpleasant on my 1920x1080 monitor.

Heh, yup, I just did that a few hours ago, and for those exact reasons! (And also to make the forum content nicely fit to the banner width.)

Glad you approve :D

I must say the forum looks so much better, now it´s nicely "overviewable" ( not an actual word, but I can´t explain it in any other way :D). In this resolution width I have a perfect overview of the forum.

Also, I must point out I do not like my text in a post going too far to the right, all the way to the end of the too wide space, so when I write a post, many times I hit enter after I reach a certain part of a sentence because I am aware that otherwise, it would be displayed far beyond my preference. I do not have this itch with this shorter width. :)

Especially when I post just one sentence (in the wider resolution), it looks so bad when it´s not short and compact but extended and long. It´s so much better to read and quicker to understand and process the text while I have a compact overview (here we go again... :D ) of the whole post.

So thank you, Driber, for the great improvement! :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Ha, it SO should be!

In Dutch we say "overzichtelijk" which literally translates to "overviewable". Never came across a word that better describes it than that!

*goes to email Merriam-Webster....* :D

You know, while I'm pleased as punch that the site once again has a formatted column width, which will make paragraphs easier on the eyes, I also hope people will keep that column format in mind when posting pictures.

There are so many high res images circulating the internet, but for forums it's a real nuisance when you can't see the entire images within the page frame, and have to either horizontally scroll, or click to view the image outside the page.

I realize not everybody has access to Photoshop, but there's plenty of cheap (even free) basic image editors out there that allow people to save a resized copy (about 700-800 pixels wide by my estimate) before they upload it to their image hosting account for forum viewing.

And never mind the thumbnailing function, which makes the image too small in addition to requiring you to click it and see it outside the page. I find it more enjoyable to see the image at just the right size lined up with the margins of the paragraph columns, seeing together with the relevant text, kind of like a magazine spread.

Driber
10th Apr 2012, 06:50
Yeah, if everyone would just upload web friendly images, it would make my life a lot easier, lol, but not everyone is photoshop savvy and that's fine - I don't expect people to be. This is why I created the forum [THUMB] code.

I don't get why you say the thumbs are "too small", though. By default, they are 640 pixels wide - enough to see the image clearly, IMO.

And as an added bonus; the thumb code is flexible - everyone can make the thumb a bit bigger or smaller at their leisure :)

Also, keep in mind that a lot of images posted on these forums aren't actually made by the poster, but instead the already hosted image URL is simply re-posted here. Re-doing those images in photoshop every time would be an time consuming task.

FYI all: I recently discovered that we had a limit of maximum 5 quotes for the forum's multi quote feature.

This has caused some confusion about why not all posts were inserted into the new reply window when users clicked on more than 5 posts to multi quote (vB doesn't warn the user about this limit...D'OH!)

I've ramped it up to 30 now, so that should hopefully be enough for when you want to comment on more than 5 posts at the same time :)

Minor FYI: We're using the abbreviation "CT" in thread titles. It stands for "Current Topic" and is used for example when we merge a newer thread with an established one, to notify people who weren't familiar with the older thread that the recent discussion may be slightly different from the thread's OP (original post).

Folks, it seems that the server upgrade has managed to solve one the most nagging (well, for me, anyway) vB bugs that we've been having for quite some time!!

Whenever you used to quick edit a sizable forum post, hitting the "Save" button would save the changes, but the quick edit window would not disappear and you had to reload the page in order to see the changes.

From what I can tell so far, the forum is not doing this anymore.

Edit: No longer applicable.

Hi folks,

TR9's release date is getting near and we expect it to set this forum on fire (as usual with the release of a new Eidos / Square game) and because of this we are looking to temporarily strengthen our team with one or two "deputy moderators" to help us keep this place running smoothly during the hectic weeks/months around March 5.

As deputy mod, you will have the ability to close threads, merge threads, and delete posts (i.e. hide from the public) that are in violation of the forum rules. Your main task will be to look out for duplicate threads, flaming and trolling, and take an appropriate action to ensure our forum stays tidy and a pleasant place for all members.

If you are (possibly) interested in this position, please fill in the questionnaire below and send it to {removed}

-------------------------

Your forum name:
Your location (country):
Your age:
How often and what times could you be available to mod (browse) the forums based on your own timezone:
Why are you interested in being a deputy mod and why should we pick you:

-------------------------

The forum staff will pick one or two people out of the submissions. The position is temporary and will most likely span from Feb 1st to May 1st 2013, but possibly longer.

Core requirements:

- Being available between Feb 1st and May 1st 2013.
- Having a friendly and helpful nature and posting politely.
- Being ready for CD sending you a little gift at the end of the term as a thank-you ;)

Now they are black by default, in tandem with the surrounding buttons, and when you click on them, they turn red and get a check mark.

It's working for me with Firefox 16 (a little old, I know, Firefox (and their stupid rapid-updates-means-brand-new-Version-every-time, gonna get ridiculous at Firefox 34 or Firefox 110) stopped supporting Mac OS X 10.5.8, which I'm using at work at the moment, haven't upgraded yet).

Probably obvious question, but have you tried clearing your cache?

For anyone who might not know, you can download all your messages!

That's what I do when I hit the limit for messages I want to save, use the checkbox at the top to choose all your messages (or pick and choose) and then choose from the "Selected Messages" dropdown to download them, or if you choose the "Download all Private Messages as:" option at the bottom of the page, it will download all messages from Inbox and Sent Items at the same time. You can then delete everything and have an empty Inbox and Sent Items again!

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I will get to responding to them as soon as I can.

For now, I'd like to welcome aboard our second Deputy Moderator - Brandon, aka Relight.

Brandon has been a great help to us, organizing the scavenger hunt thread and helped us with our recent big overhaul of the official FAQ, and other behind-the-scenes stuff.

With him and Metalrocks (see earlier announcement (http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?p=1851170#post1851170)) now added to our team to help keep the forums tidy, we hope to be sufficiently covered during these busy next few months.

I would like to thank everyone who sent us their application and who took the time to write up a bit about themselves. It is greatly appreciated that we've received so much interest. We will keep everyone's application on file in case we will need additional deputy mods, or possibly additional full fledged mods in the future :)

Hey folks,

As you all may have noticed, the hecticness around TR9 game launch has passed and the forum has settled down again, which means that we're ending our Deputy Mod program (http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?p=1837681#post1837681).

I would like to give a BIG thanks to Brandon (Relight) and Rowan (Metalrocks) for all their hard work during these past months helping out the resident staff. Well done, chaps! Much appreciated :thumb:

Please join me in welcoming Brandon and Rowan back as regular ol' forum members :)

^Both Metalrocks and Relight were made Deputy Mods for the duration of TR's launch and, clearly for a while longer to help the regular staff keep the forum tidy (mainly from duplicate threads etc, from what I can tell.) Things have quietened down now, so they both can go back to being regular members. Take at look at Driber's post quoted by TranceTrouble above ;).

Heads up, everyone. The forum team decided to slightly bump up the minimum requirements for voting in community polls. Members now require Gamer status.

This is an Eidos Forums-wide change, meaning that the same policy applies to all game forums hosted here.

FYI, we already had this policy in place for years for creating polls, as well as a bunch of other privileges that are awarded after members reach Gamer status.

To read more about user groups and what privileges they have, please follow this link (http://forums.eidosgames.com/faq.php#faq_usergr).

To quote Rai from the other thread:

"[polls are] to see opinion for active forum membership. It's not against new member's opinions, just to make sure that voters are genuinely active members."

This has nothing to do with "ignoring you". We welcome everyone's opinion and feedback, new or old members alike.

This is merely about making sure polls retain a more accurate representation of the opinions of our community, not about ignoring people.

Please continue to feel free to make your opinions heard in the topic(s) that are important to you. Devs do actually read the posts, themselves. Check out the latest podcast (http://forums.eidosgames.com/showpost.php?p=1979055&postcount=191), for example, where CD's Art Director Brian Horton mentioned he's a big lurker on the forums ;)

jessy_pinkman

I agree with Liza! How can these polls be convincing if only half of the people are allowed to vote? If Meagan would do such polls outside of the forum as well at least then I would be fine with that but no.

I don't think Brian has so much time to read through everything he sees. And since there are many other people with different opinions I doubt mine will get noticed.

Driber

^ Convincing of what?

Forum polls are for giving a quick overview of the opinions of our community. They are not petitions (unless specifically set up as such).

If this is the case then I'm wondering why the only polls we have are the ones in this forum.

If CrystalD is mostly ignoring these polls anyway, then I don't care either. Yet if they actually consider them as serious fan feedback, then I want to be considered as a fan as well. I mean, if they want the opinion of the fans, there should be polls for the people, not for the active members.

We have over 3600 polls. The vast majority of them are outside of this particular forum.

I assume you're referring to the TRDE Lara poll? That is nothing official.

If we do something official (i.e. for the global fanbase) we make sure it's accessible to all. For example, everyone is able to participate in CD's official TR10 wishlist (http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=137435) :)

I mean like only in forums. Why not in the TR blog or on TR facebook or Twitter or wherever?

Yes, that's the poll I mean. If this is nothing official and if this means these polls are getting mostly ignored anyway by the devs, then I'm fine. Yet it kinda feels like they can actually influence the devs. Like the Croft Manor poll or TR 18+ or about QTE. Or CE poll. Don't know if I'm right with this assumtion... :/

I can't answer officially, but from what I gather, and as this is the official forums that CD do come to (Meagan definitely), then they will notice these polls. They may take them into consideration, though they are mainly for forum membership opinion.

Meh, just go in the wish thread and vote for Lara/Sam like everyone else does ...or, you know game play stuff :D

I'm sure they'll be back.

Can you answer, please? Is this right? :o (I hope so...)

Why are you so concerned about a mere poll?

If you think the devs are going to base any major decisions off of some internet polls, I think you should give them a little bit more credit than that. They know very well what's on the minds of the fans and I'm sure they don't need polls to tell them that, whether they be on a forum, or FB, or wherever.

Or is all of this to help you get to gamer status quicker? Half of your forum posts must be OT discussions about polls by now :p :D

I was browsing through some other forums a couple weeks back, when I found a "Dead Space" community that does forum trophies. Have a look:

http://forums.aegis7.com/members/augrunt.html

What you're looking for is the "Awards" tab on the profile. Anyways, I thought it was a pretty cool idea and thought maybe since we're such an active forum community that some people here would get a kick out of having them. Maybe even have some voting/contest to determine the names, requirements, and icons. Could be fun for everyone.

Just thought I'd throw the idea out there.
