I know this is not quite a direct solution, but do you by any chance have a PS copy? I couldn't get my Blood Omen run on my pc either, and ended up using ePSXe to emulate the PS game. You might wanna try that. Good luck.

(I'm not really one of the 'tech support' guys here in the forum, be patient, they'll arrive eventually).

Is not really hard, all you need are certain patches and fixes:

First of course your BO1 PC CD:

2.- Second, Cuban Raul's BO Installer, this installer allows us to install BO1 in recent Operative Systems, such as windows vista or Windows 7

Cuban Raul's BO Installer (http://home.comcast.net/~masterpisgreat/KainSetup.exe)

3.- Nosgothica.org Blood Omen Bink support patch; This patch allows us to convert each BO1 video in the game from the .jam format to the .bink format (used in later games like SR2 or Defiance)

http://nosgothica.org/games/paul_met/Bink_patch_BO_(PC).exe

Now:

1.- Install BO1 using Cuban Raul's installer, not the BO CD isntaller. (choosing to install it complete)

2.- Once the game is installed, select and apply the Nosgothica.org Bink patch. (have in mind that all the .jam videos should be stored inside a subfolder called KAIN, inside the game's root folder)

3.- Play the game and enjoy it! :D

If you have any toruble please let me know, I tested this process and it works (I play BO1 in my WIn7 PC).

Don't forget to thank Cubarn Raul and Nosgothica.Org (Wrace) for making this possible!

Regards!

The Hylden - Edit: In case anyone runs into an issue where the Bink videos will not play and you're on Windows 7, or 8, this might be what you need:

http://1drv.ms/1wbDYfc

Replace the BinkBO32.dll file in your install folder and they should play.

Ber, I followed your instruction but I used "BO1_jam2bink_eng.exe" instead of "Bink_patch_BO_(PC).exe" because the latter (two times) got corrupted for some reason. Anyway, the videoes aren't the issue. The issue is the fix that is suppose make the game continue after the Tavern situations when you have a computer faster than 1.5GHz. I would prefer to use something that limits the usage of my CPU rather than using some CPU demanding application aside from the game to play it.

Do you know a way to fix this? I play on Windows 7 64-bit (maybe 64-bit is the issue?) and I've tried multiple tries including compatibility mode.

This glitch fixes and Cuban Raul's Installer and both Bink Patch-es, since all three contain kain.exe with the fix I created in 2008 year. Since you have this glitch, so your kain.exe just do not contain the appropriate patch.

I actually found a link to your patch a few minutes ago but it didn't help. I also found some another fix (perhaps yours too) that is not a kain.exe but a small utility to patch a kain.exe but it says the version is wrong or something or that it is already patched.

I have these fixes/patches:
BO1_bink.rar (necessary files to read the bik files with some filter file that made a few more videoes appear)
BO1_jam2bink_eng.exe (converted the video files to bik)
bo1_patch.zip / bo1-XP_hack.zip (I believe both are the same, they are suppose to make the game run in XP and possibly Vista/Win7 but they just make the game ask for the CD)
KainSetup.rar (Cubans installer which I used)
CPUGrabber (reduce CPU speed which didn't work and I tried different scenarios).

Anything else I need?

Upload your version of kain.exe and give me link on it, - I will look what version you use now. And also grab (perhaps, by Fraps) and upload video on your glitch after the Tavern situations (or just describe by more words), - it is interesting for me what is happens on your PC now.
BTW: one our fan tested BO1 with bink-support on Windows-7 x64 Maxi - all work fine, so the problem is not in Windows-7 or x64.

I will get back on you with the error. Typically it's only that kain.exe stops responding but I haven't checked detailed information.

You have corrupted (by your pc or something else) kain.exe. Must be this (http://www.nosgothica.org/games/bo1_kain.rar) version of kain.exe. Be sure that this file will not corrupted again.

Same issue. I now alt tabbed because the game seems to freeze. The guy at the tavern just keeps saying "The tavern is closing. Best be on your way, stranger." over and over.

hm, it is some new glitch. Instructions at 00480f80 refer to un-pixeling graphic and do not relate to processor.
So, now:
1. download these saves (http://nosgothica.org/games/bo1_saves_eng.zip) and try to load the game from the first one (FI00).
2. try this kain.exe (http://nosgothica.org/Temp/bo1_kain_test.zip) - I disable instructions at 00480f80 (graphic will be bad but we just will test this fix).

Damnit, no good news. I get the same issue (even the instruction thing) and if I try to load a saved file the game freezes (with the same error).

If it's something relating to graphics perhaps it's something with my drivers for my GTX470? The ones I currently have I have kept for almost a year now and they have worked for all games so far (all the new ones just keep messing up old games, new games or my media player).

I will install it on my brother's computer as well to see if it's something specific to my copy of Blood Omen or if it's something with my computer.

EDIT: I figured a trick I could use but it will take some time and I have some work I have to do first. I read somewhere on google to get this game working with Windows 7 and/or modern hardware. I use my RAMDrive to make a small drive like 500MB just so the game fit there or just install the game on my game drive then move the folder onto the RAMDrive that I make as FAT32 instead of NTFS. To make the game recognize the videos without having them on the drive I could use Junction Magic application. I doubt though that my hardrive or even Win7 is the main issue, more like my GPU/drivers.

wrace0

About this trick wrote Ben Lincoln here (http://www.thelostworlds.net/HowTo/Running_Blood_Omen_on_Windows_XP_and_Vista.html):

Although the game generally works when run from an NTFS-formatted partition, you may want to try installing it on a FAT-formatted partition if all else fails.
It is first time (and the first configuration of PC) when I see that this trick works. :)

To make the game recognize the videos without having them on the drive I could use Junction Magic application.
It is not needed to disable video or reading it from cd (or anywhere - see registry settings for the last one).

Once the game is installed, select and apply the Nosgothica.org Bink patch. (have in mind that all the .jam videos should be stored inside a subfolder called KAIN, inside the game's root folder)

Hopefully this will get a reply, otherwise I'll just have to find out. :(
Anyways:

Do I have to install it into C:\Program Files\Kain or C:\Program Files\Kain\kain ?

Thanks in advance :)

The full instruction lies on the nosgothica.org (here (http://www.nosgothica.org/index.php?id=files_eng)). So you should install anyone of two our Bink patches into "C:\Program Files\Kain" if you install BO1 in this folder and it contains kain.exe and subfolder kain (which should contain jam-files to convert them into bink).

Woah thanks for that quick reply! :)
Though... I figured it out already by trial and error- for anyone curious, my advice would be to download that big (~290MB) patch and run it. Then select the major Kain folder. Basically you want to install it in C:\Program Files\Kain, nothing else and that should do it.

Another question: When I look at videos on youtube of the PS1 version, Kain seems to be walking fast than on my PC- wth ? Is there any fix?

And another one *g*: I read there's a trainer that lets you boost speed(?) and one that lets you save anywhere. Do you know where one could obtain such a magnificent thingamajig? *g*

Thanks again and in advance :D

EDIT:
Also, is there a use for the "ZOOM" button? I have yet to find one, or should I say it doesnt work?!

I heard about this and created such "fix".

It is one trainer, which lies on the same link I gave above - i.e. here (http://www.nosgothica.org/index.php?id=files_eng). Originally feature to save anywhere (also as Walk Through Walls and some other) was discovered by Andrew Fradley (VampMaster) and the appropriate trainer lies here (http://www.thelostworlds.net/Software/Blood_Omen_Trainer.html).

Also, is there a use for the "ZOOM" button? I have yet to find one, or should I say it doesnt work?!
This feature worked only for resolution 320x240 (instead of default 640x480) and now it disabled also as some unsupported now (by the newest video-cards) features which leads to crash of the game (by pressing F12).

Thanks, but is there any link to it?
Note, the problem is that Kain walks too slow in comparison with the PSX version (or any other version for that matter?).

Gonna try out the Trainer. :)

This "fix" is the option Boost in the trainer on which I gave link (since this feature is very optional - like changing weapon by pressing one button or auto-recovering energy for Soul Reaver - and it is not needed for all fans). ;)

Thanks mate :)

One last question hopefully:
I've noticed that the voice overs are not affected by the "boost", which is awesome, but I've yet to see a cutscene/etc. . So is really the only stuff affected by "boost" the gameplay/combat/walking stuff?

Thanks in advance :)

You are welcome. ;)

So is really the only stuff affected by "boost" the gameplay/combat/walking stuff?
Yes. Also bink-video can not be affected by one more reason: it replays by external dll to which passed from kain.exe only the name of video-file (and the game just wait for ending video). Also credits does not affected. ;)

If anyone can help with the problem I'm having I'd be more than appreciative. I've followed Ber's steps and Blood Omen works perfectly with the movies and such, only problem I have is when the Blood Omen screen pops up, it just stays there and doesn't reveal the menu, which is there, but the blood omen image is on it. That's not the main problem though, main problem is after the intro it goes to the tavern, the cut scene is still there, and is cut by the current screen of the tavern, and when I try to minimize, it freezes the game and the only way to move is to minimize the game. Does anyone know what to do? Help would be much appreciated.

wrace0
4th Dec 2011, 13:08
Aduro, read carefully above: you need FAT-partition to avoid this problem (look here (http://forums.eidosgames.com/showpost.php?p=1704352&postcount=14)), - just run the game from usb flash drive or create RAMDrive as described above.

Aduro
4th Dec 2011, 15:18
I do have a FAT32 drive on my computer, though I think I'll try out this here, thank you Wrace =D

I tried installing it from my fat32 drive, still had the same error where after the cut scene, it doesn't fade out correctly and it comes to the tavern where you see only part of it, and if you try to minimize the whole game is frozen until you minimize again. Tried to run it on my USB as well, same thing :/ I dunno what to do anymore.

wrace0
4th Dec 2011, 23:36
hm, at first I thought that it is again the problem with frozen after barmen-speeking, but now I read carefully your post and it seems that here there is another problem.
hm, are there any screens with errors on background (when you minimize the game)? And one more: can you make "Print Screen" and upload image? I want to view what happens.
Also it is interesting the version of Windows-7 you have (x32 or x64), type of processor (and number of cores) and name of Video-Card (since some strange happens now - some time later all work fine but now appear some new glitches on Win-7 - may be the newest hardware and/or drivers, may be the newest updates by Microsoft, may be something else).

And one more thing: try to install and run the game by the Ber's instructions, but without applying the bink-support, - something will be changed?

P.S.: also upload kain.exe from the folder with installed game and give link on it - I want to compare this version with original ones that I have (may be it corrupted again).

http://www.sendspace.com/file/2yhnmd Here's my .exe and the picture: http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/2476/bloodomenproblem.png Now I installed it and followed Ber's steps without using the bink support. All I had to do was end explorer.exe to stop the weird colors in the scenes, so the picture is now clear, but the problem is it's stuck in that image until I minimize it, and when I re-open it, it's stuck to the image still, so I dunno why it stays stuck until I minimize it. If you want, here's my PC specs:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2310M CPU @ 2.10GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.1GHz

Memory: 4096MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 4030MB RAM

Card name: Intel(R) HD Graphics Family
Display Memory: 1696 MB
Dedicated Memory: 64 MB
Shared Memory: 1632 MB

wrace0
5th Dec 2011, 19:16
hm, I'm sorry but I think that I can't help you now, - to determine the origin of this problem and remove it, it is needed to have your configuration of PC (or Win-7 x64 as minimum) but I have WinXP SP3 x32 and do not planner to change it on Win-7.

The last advice I can give - try to load any save from these ones (http://nosgothica.org/games/bo1_saves_eng.zip). (hm, advices like playing under Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 with installed Win98 are too evident.)

P.S.: hm, one guy (you do not listen of him, so I don't give your nick-name) find the solution of the last problem (with the Error Screen when using FAT-partition allows to avoid the problem) - the problem is in DEP (Data Execution Prevention). Disabling DEP (or setting exclusions for BO1) solve this problem. So, you can try to solve the problem with screen-freezing by the same way.

Aduro
6th Dec 2011, 06:22
Made an exception on KAIN for DEP, still has the same problem sadly :/ Dunno if it'll work with my version of Windows.

wrace0
6th Dec 2011, 20:43
Saves also do not help? One more idea (one our fan also have Win-7 x64 with the same problem): may be the problem you have is just known old problem as described here (http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=85588)?

RainaAudron

I have win7 32bit and even though my BO is working but the cutscenes are all weird colours :/ I have installed the bink support with ps1 cutscene swap out, though initial logos show correctly now, the game crashes all the time after the crystal dynamics logo...

wrace0
7th Dec 2011, 00:57
hm, the game crashes with an error-screen or without? (hm, may be DEP again since I tested bink-support by myself on Win-7 x32 and it worked without any errors (usual configuration of PC - intel pentium dual core, more than 2 Ghz and 2 Gb, the newest nVidia video-card with more than 256 Mb Vram); also for some fans BO1 worked with bink-support without any errors and on Win-7 x64 too; and for some fans setting Compatibility Mode with Win'98 for kain.exe on Win-7 lead to crashing the game.) And one more: if you rename all logos in the folder KAIN (just to skip all of them) and unset Compatibility Mode for kain.exe (if it set, of course), the game also crashes (with bink-support)?

P.S.: it is interesting that under WinXP all is fine. :)

Aduro
7th Dec 2011, 04:44
I checked the old thread and also used the idea you had with taking out the compability of the .exe, and even with bink-support and DEP disabled on it, it now gives an error when the bartender scene comes on. The patch to avoid CPU grabber also doesn't work on the .exe, if you wanted me to get that.

wrace0
8th Dec 2011, 00:11
The error-screen - is very good, since now we can determine the crash-offset (what address is figured in the error screen?) and rewrite it. But if the error like this one:
http://www.nosgothica.org/img/mess.gif
it means that DEP (in the case it disabled now) already corrupted kain.exe.

The patch to avoid CPU grabber (the pre-latest version) is the same one as Cuban Raul's installer has. Also on the Lost Worlds (http://www.thelostworlds.net/HowTo/Running_Blood_Omen_on_Windows_XP_and_Vista.html) lies one more older patch (Raistlin633's patch) which allows to run BO1 (under some configurations of PC under Win-7) and for which it is needed to use CPU-Grabber to avoid freezing after Barmen's speeking in the Tavern.

hm, strange. May be there are some antivirus software (which check this file)?

hm, may be it is consequence of one additional fix in the kain.exe of the first version of bink-support. Try this kain.exe (http://nosgothica.org/games/bo1_kain.rar) from the second version of bink-support.

Okay, I will try to disable antivirus while copying. EDIT: it helped! copied in an instant, thanks a lot.

I have tried that exe you posted but now it doesnt even show any logo at the beginning and stops working instantly...

I also tried that WAwin7 color fix - it freezes the explorer and the game does not even start.. edit: it corrupted my working original bo copy so had to reinstall.

EDIT: IT WORKED!! I have installed the bink support (with ps cutscenes) on a new copy of Blood Omen and both the cutscenes and the game works without any problems! :thumb: Thanks to you who made the patch, excellent work! Now only wait for the amazing Blood Omnicide :)

I am glad to hear that the game works without glitches now (I think that anti-virus software just "cured" pill.big).

Also I heard that you with Jake created the greatest resource lostchronicle.com (http://lostchronicle.com/), - my congratulations! (And with 15-years of LOK all of us. ;) )

(Also I removed above link on the program WAwin7 for color fix since it did not work correctly - thanks for testing and sorry for this glitches program.)

About Blood Omnicide: I also waiting for the moment when we can play in the full (or new demo) version of this remake of BO1. I talk with Vortex (the cheaf of Blood Omnicide) some time ago and he said that on the New Year may be some surprises from their team (not one like in the past time). Hey there.
Please excuse me, but I need help, too.
I´ll try my best to explain, but my english is not the best.
I don´t really know how to start. My OS is windows 7 home premium 64 bit.
I tried many things now, although I don´t know much about Computers.
At first I tried to install the game using the autostart. I runned it in compatibility mode W98 because otherwise the programm could not realize that i have enough space on my PC. When the installation is finshed an error appears which says: "can not create program shortcut" (thats not exactly what it says, i have the german CD version). By starting the data from the installed directory, the screnn gets black and than the game crashes back to desktop. Same thing if i install it on an USB.
When I try installing it by that Cuban Raul thingy, it says after the installation:
"The Blood Omen: legacy of Kain installation CD could not be found on any of your Drives! Please insert the CD and restart the installation process."
But of course the Cd is inserted.
When i choose : "game is already installed" at the cuban raul, the patch is installed and by executing the legacy of kain shortcut it creates i get into game menu, which is in english and not german, although I use the german CD, but ok. i can go to options and click everything, just the world map is buggy, i have to choose it with arrow keys and enter. by clicking preview or start game in main menu the game crashes back to desktop.
I hope i could explain my problem and any of can help me. :(

wrace0

Some ways:
1) try to install bink-support (link in my signature);
2) disable DEP on kain.exe.

About errors-screens:
1) "can not create program shortcut" - it is usual bag of original installer;
2) "The Blood Omen: legacy of Kain installation CD could not be found on any of your Drives! Please insert the CD and restart the installation process." - hm, may be some files there are no on the installation CD.
3) game crashes (after the main menu) without any error-screens?

German vs English: hm, if the ways above is helped for you, then I can apply the appropriate patches on your version of kain.exe (if you give me it).

pontiuspilawa
23rd Dec 2011, 11:23
So I don´t really know what to do now. Every way i tried to install the game, it seemed to be corrupted somehow. Sorry for annoying, but could you write the best known way to install the game again?

EDIT: Is it possible, that Cuban Rauls patch does not work with the german version? Because it always says that it could not find the CD. Maybe the program checks for an data that is different in the german version. Is it possible that one of you guys could send me the datas from the english CD? Would this work?

wrace0
23rd Dec 2011, 16:21
The better way - you will upload german version of kain.exe on some host and give link on it here, since sending data from the english CD (pill.big) is illegal.
And it is strange that your version does not have movies.

pontiuspilawa
23rd Dec 2011, 17:16
So now I installed the game by Cuban Raul from the CD. After finishing it says that my CD could not be found. By clicking ignore (cancel will undo installation) the game is installed and i can enter main menu as described. Now i go to C:\KAIN where I installed it, take the kain.exe and send it to you?
And what do you mean, I have no movies?

EDIT: Oh, and the link for the bink converter is a dead one and i can not find it anywhere else.
Also, maybe it would help, if you would tell me, which datas are in your KAIN- folder, because it seems as if i have not very
much datas in it.

EDIT 2: I hope i did it the right way : http://www.speedyshare.com/file/verVr/KAIN.EXE

wrace0
24th Dec 2011, 06:46
Now i go to C:\KAIN where I installed it, take the kain.exe and send it to you?
It is evident that the version of kain.exe from CubanRaul's installer I can download from his own site, - is'nt it?
I need the german version of kain.exe from your cd, - only in such way I can apply patches to it. CubanRaul's version is already patched and it is evident.
By steps:
1. install the game WITHOUT using CubanRaul's installer.
2. go to the game folder, take and upload kain.exe from it.
3. wait for my conclusion. :)

Oh, and the link for the bink converter is a dead one and i can not find it anywhere else.
On our site there are 3 links on the 3 different versions of bink-support. All of them are dead? If so, then you have problems with your browser or proxy-server, - in this case I can't help you.

KAIN-folder (subfolder of the folder with installed game) has such data:

ACT1.bik
ACT2.bik
ACT4.bik
ACT7.bik
ACT8.bik
ACT10.bik
ACT11.bik
ACT12.bik
ACT13.bik
ACT14A.bik
ACT14B.bik
ACT15A.bik
ACT15B.bik
ACT16.bik
ACT17.bik
ACT18.bik
AVERFIN.bik
EDENFIN.bik
ENTITY.VAG
MALFIN.bik
NUPFIN.bik
ORACFIN.bik
PILL.BIG
PILLFIN.bik
TIMEA.bik
TIMEB.bik
VORFIN.bik
WILLFIN.bik
*.bik-files (or the appropriate paires of the *.jam + *.vag-files if the bink-support is not installed) - are the movies (+ there are 3 additional logo-files which I removed from my folder). If your version of the game does not have (in the game-folder and/or on cd) the appropriate files (with the names like *.bik-files), so you have rip-version of the game which was be hacked.

Ha, it's me again ;)

I have two videos for you wrace (regarding the walking speed):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YE3mWVDTYg&t=6m14s
from the PC version I assume, where the walking speed is kind of... close to mine, meaning slow, but quite a bit slower (imo) than my version.

And yet this PSOne version is even faster:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_11r1yE3FI&t=7m0s

So, could I assume that they are both the PS1 versions and I'm just seeing speed differences that just -aren't there- or...?

Oh, and also I've got a problem with the colors:
http://www.imagebanana.com/view/ezzddnwu/kainscreen.jpg
The 'black' is very ugly- having green in it and just generally looking quite ****. :(

About walking speeds: hm, the PC-version is already have one speed on all PC's (which is slower than in PS-version) and the fast speed by using of the my trainer (I look youtube-movies and I think that the boost-feature make speed faster than on PS).

About colors: may be it is a Win-7 feature? I don't remember that on WinXP was such ugly colors.

Merry Christmas. :)
hm, kain.exe in your version is 1 to 1 as original kain.exe from the english version. Are you sure that you have localized version of the game (and that something should change - the game menu, for example)?
And the question that I asked some time before: the game crashes (after main-menu) with some error-screen or without it? (If with the error-screen, so you need to disable DEP on kain.exe; if without - disable any anti-virus software, reinstall the game, apply patch and try to run the game).

Hmm, I know the game is very famous for it´s excellent german synchro and also the package is german. But it may me that the menu is in english.
And after clicking start in the main menu its seems to start for a second ( black screen, but it looks like the game wants to start first level or intro) but then the screen gets to an other black and im back at the desktop without any error or something, it just ends the game.

Hmm, I dunno, tried applying compatibility mode features like only using 256 colors, disabling desktop design(?) or whatever it's called and nothing seemed to help, but tbh I don't see it as that annoying anymore...

Still, got any tips?:)

I've got one for you;

What I've done:
Installed the game with the Cuban Raul installer.
Used the bink pack thingy.
Tried all the compabillity modes, without luck.

My PC:
I'm running Win 7, 64-bit.

My issue:
I open the game and get three different game company things (I believe that part is uavoidable :P).
Afterwards I see nothing. Nothing at all, just black.
I suppose that there is supposed to be a menu here, but I cant see it.
I hear sound effects and stuff when I use the up and down arrows, and the game proceeds when I press space.
Then I see the intro, in which Kain goes homicidal on some wizards, and stuff.
When that is over, the picture freezes on the half-faded picture of the nine pedestals (the lastly shown picture), where after I hear that wierd conversation with the bartender
At this point I have to Alt-F4 out of the game.

Summary:
I can see the game companies, but not the menu.
I can see the Intro, but not the bartender scene, or the game itself...
Help?

2 Graesholt: hm, it is known feature.
Solution from TheLostWorlds:

If the FMV audio is out of sync with the video, and you have more than one monitor, disable every monitor except the main one while playing the game.
The official solution:

Q: I've installed the game, set up DirectX, but the game screen is blank.
A: This is a characteristic of having the incorrect video driver loaded. To correct this:
1. Go to the Start menu on your taskbar and select Settings -> Control Panel.

2. Double-click on the Display icon, select the Settings tab.

3. Click on the Change Display Type button.

4. From the Change Display Type dialog box, confirm that the adapter type matches the card you have installed in your computer. If it is incorrect, click on the Change button.

5. In the Select Device dialog box, choose the correct video adapter. Click OK.
The additional solution from this forum:

If you have a Crossfire setup, disable Catalyst AI.

hm, 2 all: note that the game is running under Win-7 x64, but no crashing.

2 pontiuspilawa: I found (in this forum) the post with the problem like you

After updating to ATI Catalyst v9.9, BO1 don't start anymore. When I run the .exe I get a second of black screen, then I get launched back to desktop. (Vista x64)
So I can conclude that the problem can be in some video-cards and their configurations.
Or may be pill.big just corrupted, - compare it with the one on the CD (hm, do you have a possibility to test your version of the game on another PC or under another OS?).

Still, got any tips?
Try to run the game under WinXP. :)

Actually, I also use catalyst, so it really may be the ATI card. In which thread did you read that? Do they have an conclusion?
No, this problem was not solved since for this it is needed to have such ATI card and Win-7 x64 (in thread from what I quoted the post it is the only post).

How can I compare this data?
For example, in the Total Commander there is the feature "Compare the files by content".
Or just upload pill.big (packed in rar- or 7z-archive) from your version somewhere and give me link on it in the PM (!), - I will look your version and test it on WinXP SP3 with nVidia-card.

P.S.: or I can upload russian version of pill.big and give link you on this version in PM (just for testing). :)

2 pontiuspilawa: I tested your version of pill.big - it is not corrupted and is worked well on my PC (with WinXP SP3 and nVidia-video-card). Thus, I conclude that there is something wrong (for BO1) in the drivers of the newest ATI-video-cards.
There are 2 solutions and in this case too:
1. just play in the PS-version of BO1 using emulator (ePSXe, for example);
2. use MS Virtual PC 2007 (or something like - WMVare, for example) with pre-installed OS (Win98, WinXP, Windows-7) to play BO1 (these Virtual Machines have the simplest video-cards which allow to play in BO1 without crashing).

2 Graesholt: you can do this in the options of ATI-video-card, I think. Ask Muyfa666 (http://forums.eidosgames.com/member.php?u=92791) in PM for more exhaustive explanation (I never had the another video-card then nVidia).

Isn´t a Virtual Machine like an emulator for older OS? How can it have an other card than my PC actually has?
Yeah, Virtual Machine is like an emulator for ANY OS (I install both Win98 and WinXP, and Windows-7 too). For example, MS Virtual PC has video-adapter S3 Trio32/64 with 8 Mb VRam (VMWare has something like) and does not support 3D-Acceleration (though it is impossible to run some games on them, but in BO1 and SR1 you can play). I think that this feature (another video-card) is realized in software-mode (or something like). I played in BO1 and SR1 under MS Virtual PC in 2007, - when there are no good patches for these games.

But I have an Nvidia card.
In such case the solution with disabling Catalyst AI (which is for ATI-cards) is not your's, - try another solution from ones I wrote under this one. (The source of the problem is evident - video-output goes into the wrong channell; so you need to redirect this output; how do this is written above.)

I have solved this issue by finding that I was running the adapter for my integrated graphics card, and by using the nvidia controll panel, I was able to run the program with that card instead of my other.

I can't find something like "change display typ" on windows 7 , maybe i'm in the wrong direction, because i don't understand everything in detail.
About "change display type": of course, on Win-7 there are no such thing exactly (because instruction was written for Win98), but there are something like and this deals with the settings of your video-adapter, - for example, on WinXP also there are no Change Display Type button, BUT there is drop-down menu on the same page (2. in the instruction) in which you can choose your video-adapter and after you need press the button Apply. Also - on the same page - there are button Additionally (or something like - I have russian version of Windows, so I don't know how exactly is this button written on English version), which allows to configure other settings of video-adapter.
Reasoning (for understanding):

(The source of the problem is evident - video-output goes into the wrong channell; so you need to redirect this output; how do this is written above.)

Can you post a screenshot of the windows where i have to change it?
No, because I have: 1) WinXP; 2) russian version of this OS.

After the barman completed his sentence, the game crashes a few seconds later with "no reaction from kain.exe"

I've tried making sure other discs work on my drive, and I've put the BO disc in my wife's pc. Both worked fine. I've been all over the internet looking for an answer. Am I doing something wrong?

wrace0
13th Apr 2012, 23:54
You need to place this trainer in the same folder as you installed game (on one level with kain.exe) and after that click launch button. If you click About button you will see all available hotkeys of the trainer.

Lore Keeper
14th Apr 2012, 02:42
Ok, so, if I put the trainer in the KAIN folder (my main game folder), the launch button on the trainer does nothing. If I put it in the kain folder (lower case), which is inside the KAIN folder, I get the message that the game requires its cd.

wrace0
15th Apr 2012, 05:35
It seems that you install bink-support into subfolder kain of your main game folder KAIN, since thainer can't launch kain.exe in the main folder but run it the subfolder.
(Do you have *.bik-files in the subfolder kain?)
But you can just run the trainer (which should lie in the main game folder) and then run the game, - it also should work (without pressing button launch in the trainer).

Hi. At first thanks.
If you have the same problem as Graesholt's (post #53 - i.e. movies and sounds are on, but the in-game picture is off), so "this is a characteristic of having the incorrect video driver loaded" and you need to correct this by changing settings of your video-card.

Hello.

first of thx for the great fixes and allowing me to play this game on windows 7 64 bit.

the game and the video's work fine, however the menu is having graphical artifacts. the sword cursor is a bit stuttery and when i move it around, it looks like this. weird lines over the screen.

when its standing still, there are no graphics glitches.

I was also wondering, is it posible to disable fullscreen? i prefer playing older games with black bars around, becuase this resolution 640x480 looks bad stretched on 1680x1050 monitor.

i have nvidia gtx 260 with latest drivers, and changing video settings didn't help.

is the game supposed to look like this?

also wanted to ask, to get the proper move speed from playstation version, i need to use a trainer? or will it then be faster then normal?

thx in advance, and again, great work on fixing up this game :)

I can't load any game, when i want load game or credits, world map or controls, game freeze and crash.

Could i have wrong (or corrupted?) file "kain.exe"?

Im using Microsoft Security Essentials, but its disabled.

I really don't know what else to do, pls any idea?...

Go to Start->Control Panel->System->Advanced System Settings>Pefromance->Data Execution Prevention, set "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select", add Kain.exe to the list. That should fix it for you.

I have read online here on the forums and understand there is a installer, and some russian website that makes no sense to convert the .JAM files in the original Blood Omen Legacy of Kain game to get it to work. Problem is none of the links work for the video converter download. I managed to get the game to run but the FMV sequences are a issue. If the website was not in Russian I coud probably get this running.... but it would be nice to get an official all in one fix for Windows XP/7.

Is there any chance of this? And are there any people on these forums employed by Eidos that could tell me if it is possible, or if will will never happen? Or anyone who can point me in the direction to email someone directly to get this issue resolved.

Perhaps we could get a petition going here, and on Steam, and GOG. If Eidos felt people would buy the game maybe this could happen. But then maybe they don't even have the rights to do so since it was originally developed by Crystal Dynamics.

Been playing for about an hour and I decided the movement speed is manageable. If I remember right you move faster in different forms later anyway. I really need to finish this game. I played on PS1 all the time in jr high school but never completed it. It's still a lot of fun :)

There is one issue though that I have not seen mentioned here. My screen is stretched. It actually looks OK except my magic bar is barely visable. I can only see half of the vial and ball at the bottom of the vial. So I need to fix that. I assume this game was meant for an old CRT PC monitor and thus needs to be in 4:3 format. I see no video options other than gamma correction. I also checked the Kain folder to see if there was a .ini file to maybe manually set the video.

If anyone knows how to do this it would be appreciated to get things correct. I would like to know what you set it at.

Finally, i'm getting a new laptop in the mail later this week so can someone please tell me where the saves are located? I looked in Kain/saves folder and there are a bunch of items in there. How do I know which one is the one I need to move to my USB disk so I can pick up on my laptop when i'm with my GF.

Thanks everyone! You all have been very helpful!!! I 'm pretty stoked I get to finally beat this game, and on PC is a bonus! The game seems much better graphically than on the PS1.

The game is supposed such feature but only for 320x240 resolution which is disabled by default in the last patches since some video-modes are not supported on the newest video-cards and lead to crush of the game.

also wanted to ask, to get the proper move speed from playstation version, i need to use a trainer? or will it then be faster then normal?

About "be faster then normal" - I do not know since I do not play in PS-version.

hm, specially for english fans I created english page on my own (our russian) site, - link at my signature on this english page with files (patches, trainers).
For converting BO1-movies (manually .jam-s and .vag-s) you need to use the first link in the BO1-section (!Bink-Converter for BO1! (+ bink-support)). This installer has original utilities (i.e. like "open source") that you can use them by your will.
To download installer you need to click on the image in the left column (BO1.ico).

About gog.com (and Steam): they do not have rights from Silicon Knights (BO1 - it is not Eidos's product) to place updated BO1 on these sites. And as it was in the case of SR1, updated version of the game - it is just SR1 with applied patches from russian fan-site. :)

Finally, i'm getting a new laptop in the mail later this week so can someone please tell me where the saves are located? I looked in Kain/saves folder and there are a bunch of items in there. Subfolder SAVES of the folder with installed game contains saves you seek.
Saves are the files with the name in the format FI##.sav.
FI0#.sav - saves on the first page, F1#.sav - saves on the second page, and so on.
FI00.sav - upper save on the first page, FI01.sav - the second (from up to down) save on the first page, and so on.
You can choose the saves you need, move another saves in another place, run game and check that you leave saves you needed. Also you can rename files as you wish (I mean by change the first and second of two numbers in FI##.sav).

Then I used a software to implement a fix to the executable file that will reduce the CPU power in half.
Game worked pretty well, but the sound was an issue if I pick up the cards or similar.

If it still works slow
Extra step for the fix : Windows emulation (Win 95-98) and install it in the default directory. That fixed even the sound issue for me.

One of the options is to emulate win 98 as much as possible (it's easier to emulate then to install because win 98 doesn't use modern drivers for the gpu etc)

And the best option IMO is to find a good Pentium III or IV with older stuff and enjoy older games properly.

Nah, it's not the issue, the PC version itself is slower than the PS1 original.

Aha, didn't know that one.

However there really was a slowdown during the combat and the music chop so those steps fixed my issue.

I didn't have any slowdowns with wrace's patches.

Heh, I never used any patches before :D

Might as well give it a try next time when I feel like playing BO on Win7

Hello, thank to wrace's patches I managed to run the game on Vista, no problems. Thanks! Except one thing.. without the trainer the movement is very slow, with the trainer is a bit too fast.. is there a way to make it run at about the PS1 version's speed? Now I'm not really asking this, but maybe wrace could tweak the trainer to match that speed, or make an alternative version with just this change? It's the only thing that could be improved imho.. Thanks again for all your work on this.

I have a problem that after the inital video when you're in the tavern no controls on the keyboard work. I tried pressing every key but got no response. Any help there?

As for keybinds not working I've got no idea, have you checked your controls option? Maybe in your game keys are not initially set for some reason?

And I have to look into this speed up traineer, I was sure that this 'slow motion' is the correct pace of the game :D (never played it on ps. first Legacy of Kain game that I played was the first Soul Reaver. It's amazing. :))

Anyway, thanks to all of the really helpfull posts in this thread I managed to run my BO1 on Windows 7 with fully working videos (converted from bink) and no problems at all. At least so far :). I have one question tho. Is there a way to turn up the volume of voices (sound acting) without raising the overall volume of the game? Slashing monsters and getting hit is damn loud, while voices of the characters talking etc. are very quiet. I have to get my head near the notebook to hear everything clearly. Which kinda ruins the experience as I am playing on wireless keyboard and the notebook was intended to sit far away from me :D. If I just raise the overall volumes to max I can hear the voices with no problem, but the fight sounds are just too damn loud. I am living at my gf's house atm, with her parents and they have a little kid (~1y.o.) so I cant play it too loud as - of course - I am playing at night. Are the headphones the only solution?? I surely hope not, coz audio output (if you know what I mean, the slot when you insert your headphones/speakers jack) is not working properly. I often have to turn the plug and move it around coz it sits quite loose in the slot. :mad2:

I am sorry if I am not clear with my message, English is not my mothertongue. If you do not understand some parts of my post please ask me and I will do my best to write a better explanation of what I meant.

Problem is none of the links work for the video converter download. I managed to get the game to run but the FMV sequences are a issue. If the website was not in Russian I coud probably get this running....

This one works: http://nosgothica.org/games/joi/BO1_jam2bink.exe

And in the future, try to use Google Chrome and turn on the option to transalate foreign websites to your own language. The outcome is well, crappy, but still I managed to find the proper link this way. :)

Thanks for your attention!

Hi every one !
Just bought a copy of Blood Omen, and the game is working great. I just have a problem : I actually can't save.

When I walk on the "save sign" on the floor, nothing happens :/

I used the Cuban Raul's Installer, and ran the game to check : the cinematics and the game are running great.

I have a french version of Blood Omen and i'm using Windows 8.1. Can you help me?

Thanks a lot :D

Go into your BO1 folder and create subfolder SAVED. It should help.

I got it up and running on 8.1 64-bit , everything is perfect except Kain and enemies walk/fight slowly. I tried the Trainer with "boost" option but then , it makes it way too fast. PS1 version was normal , but i love PC ver. because of faster loading and its little prettier :D

Wonder if this could be fixed somehow , it would be great if animation speed can be upped only a little bit.

It is my trainer and now I do not have enough info/time to solve your problems.
Moreover, I checked BO1 on the notebook of my wife (Win-8 x64 with 2 video-cards - internal one and nVidia) and I saw that BO1-PC can work with normal speed (like on PS1) and without Boost-option of the trainer.

I have found on youtube another guy like me, playing with a slowly PC version.
My curently in-game speed is EXACTLY the same as it !

In comparison this is the normal speed PS1 NTSC US Blood Omen game :

Do you see that gigantic Difference beetween them ??

Make the appropriate fix by yourself if you think that you are so clever. :)

Excuse me,
I had badly understood your message.
I had understood that you did not see the differencebeetween PC and PS1 speed.

I presume that to modify your patch requires skills which I do not have. :hmm:
Then, for the moment I would play with the "BOOST " option even if the game turns slightly too fast.

I hold has to thank you for your work on your trainer patch :thumb:

Found a way to get Blood Omen running at the speed of the PlayStation version by using this program called DxWnd. I've made an ini file that you can drop into the DxWnd folder to play the game with the only necessary change being the directory of Kain.exe. I'll post a detailed guide later
https://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/
http://www.mediafire.com/file/fah7o1sdfn0arn9/dxwnd.ini

On a separate note, I've been working on a mod that replaces some of the incorrect sound files in the PC version's PILL.BIG file with the correct ones from the PlayStation version. However, I can't seem to make a patch using Blood Omnicide's BloodPill and can only build the entire PILL.BIG file. Is there anyone that has had experience with making patches to Blood Omen's PILL.BIG be willing to shed some help?

DxWnd is sooner bugged utility. There is more simple way to normalize game speed and graphics in BO1 - dgVoodoo (http://dege.freeweb.hu/).
About patching pill.big (by comparison) - RDKO (http://rdko.sourceforge.net/) in help.
Or write your own patcher.

I reinstalled Windows 7 on my computer and tried playing Blood Omen recently. While I was able to get the game to play properly before on W7 and W10, the game crashes after the opening cutscene or when loading a save. I tried the old install I had for Blood Omen and I even did a new install, but I still can't get the game to work. I also tried running the game using DxWnd and dgVoodoo.

I get this error message after the game's screen goes black:
The instruction at 00480f80 referenced memory at 00480f80
The memory could not be written

Click on OK to terminate the application

I finished my support of LOK-games (hm, yeah, it was very long time), but I forgot to delete subscriptions on threads here (fixed now).

About solving the problem with launching BO1 on Win-10 (7):
1) of course, it is needed to have the fan-patch for BO1 (say, from Cuban Raul's installer);
2) for movies it is needed to have either bink-patch or AHK-Injector created by Peixoto (or just try dgVoodoo);
3) Compatibility Mode with WinXP (Win-10) or Win-98 (Win-7), or just dgVoodoo (this utility also can optimise movement speed);
4) either not activated for all files DEP or kain.exe in its exclusions list (the main problem of Win-7; and for SR1 too);
5) desactivated anti-virus (because there are too many stupid anti-viruses that can prevent BO1 and SR1 from normal execution).
That's all. All mentioned utilities/patches can be found in the internet. (I do not distribute anything relating to old games no more).

Thanks for the help, wrace. Your 4th suggestion solved the issue I had.

I was able to successfully patch PILL.BIG to use the higher quality sounds from the PlayStation version and I'd like to share the patch I made here.
https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/978-blood-omen-legacy-of-kain-hq-sound-patch/
http://www.moddb.com/mods/hq-audio-patch

I also reuploaded every patch that added Bink support from NosGothica.org, since the website is dead.

Here's something I'd like to share, a Bink patch that uses higher quality conversions of the PlayStation videos. The downside to this compared to the NosGothica patch is that the videos take up more storage space.

Someone made an OpenGL wrapper for BO1 that corrects speed issues with the game and restores the ability to zoom the camera in and out along with fixing some other issues. It also comes with PlayStation quality cutscenes with stereo audio.

Now there is dgVoodoo (DX-wrapper, not OpenGL) which does the same things and has much smaller size then this product.

Verokster
26th Sep 2018, 00:31
dgVoodoo is just dx wrapper, but it doesn't fix PC port bugs (gameplay speed, inevntory and map speed, zoom, display modes, non-fixed camera and etc.). If you don't need stuff like progressive cutscenes, multilingual support and subtiles - you can download just patch without all these features at verokster.blogspot.com (http://verokster.blogspot.com/2018/05/legacy-of-kain-blood-omen-gl-wrapper.html#downloads) - 20Kb

dgVoodoo fixes bugs with gameplay speed (including high speed on the World Map), checked.
Moreover, dgVoodoo does not use openGL as your patch.
One more: we did not make too high quality cutscenes for that to do not obtain too big size of installer (bink-patch) as you did. Also we do not distribute all language packs in one package - only in separate packages.
Subtitles is good thing. Can you add them to SR1 too? (Fans asked about them.)
