View Full Version : Something similar to DX:HR's Hacker Minigame? - Evil Cult

24th Sep 2011, 01:15

I enjoyed the Hacker minigame in HR very much and it reminded me of a game I have recently re-re-re-discovered called Evil Cult (http://www.in-fi-del.net/static/cult/index.html). [JavaScript browser game, non-mmo]

Evil Cult is turn-based and your goal is to invade enemy cult's leader nodes. Percentages and the danger being discovered are central elements and the reason how I connect this to HR.

Contrary to HR's minigame, the graph needs to be explored and edges are distance-based and always work both ways. There is also a portion of micor-management where you can form sects and direct their actions to find out more about enemies.

The game is in development and I will invite the developer to read this thread.

You can play older versions of Evil Cult and the developer's other games here (http://www.in-fi-del.net/static/index.html).

I am curious to find out if people who liked HR's minigame are also intrigued by Evil Cult and in what way they would like the game to develop further.

Do you agree that it feels a little like the HR hacking minigame? Also, if you know of any similar games please share.

Earning virgins is much more satisfying than xp points, that's for sure :) But that's the only positive thing about it.

This game and the hacking minigame in DXHR are be plagued by the same problem, as basing the primary action (capturing node) on random probability destroys all strategic depth.

I think you can see Master of Orion as a progenitor of this kind of games, only 10 times more complex and much less random.

Uplink is in the same vein:

I agree, MoO2 is always on my mind when I'm playing evil cult. I played a bit of Uplink, but never saw that node game part..

This weekend there was a small game dev jam in Berlin, Germany and I suggested "Hacking" as the topic. In the brainstorming phase I showed videos of the DXHR hacking minigame.

You can check out the results in this blogpost (http://bearjamde.blogspot.com/2011/09/berlin-mini-jam-hacking-sep-24-2011.html).
