That's a lot of screens...

I'd say Picus, the emptiness when wondering around near the beginning both confused and scared me.
However now that I think about it a lot of the areas feel very similar, no doubt because of that yellow tint.

Lower Hengsha for sure (actually takes the cake for just about any game I've ever played).

I'll put together a really artsy photo album of the area soon...

Looks wise? Tai Yong Medical. I will also say that I really liked how Panchaea looked when you looked out of the windows and just saw that massive hole in the ocean and all the fires.
Actually playability and best map? Singapore. I got lost a bunch. It felt more like the last level than Panchaea did.

Atmosphere and visuals: Tai Yong Medical and Lower Hengsha.
Lower Hengsha is pretty much best piece of environment I have ever witnessed in a video game, and Tai Yong Medical with it's eerie ambient track combined with breathtaking vistas and glimpse of a SUN in a Deus Ex franchise. Sent shivers through my spine.

Gameplay: Hengsha harbour (whatever that place was) and Singapore.
Harbour map reminded me of a Brooklyn Naval Shipyards from the original game, and the area was one of the less linear levels in the game. Singapore was a perfect infiltration map, covering both outdoors and indoors of a vast complex.

There isn't really any maps I did not like, though I'm thoroughly bored with office complexes. Those damn cublicles. They seem to be one of the most overused and generic environments in modern shooters.

We need to get some Lower Heng Sha pictures up in here.

I just love lower Hengsha. It reminds me so much of the Sprawl in William Gibson's Neuromancer and also his Bridge Trilogy. I would love to see cops in pink uniform patrolling the small shops and whenever I visit the Capsule Hotel I expect Molly Millions to jump out of one of the capsules. The only thing to make it more cyberpunky would be a Puppet Parlor. ;)

Yeah I forgot about that, the first time I rolled into Jensen's apartment was amazing. The bedroom/bathroom little details scattered around told a sad story.

I agree with App. You don't really get the scale of the Pangu until you're actually in it, staring down at an entire metropolis's skyline. Then you look up, and there's an even bigger structure.

Also TYM had very good, chill music. It was very Mirror's Edge

1. Adam's apartment is probably my favorite. I so want to live there!

2. Hengsha... nuff said. :)

3. The Server Core where Eliza lives, and you have to fight Fedorova. Really beautiful.

4. The secret level of Picus, with the HAND! It reminded me so much of parts of VersaLife and lower UNATCO all rolled into one.

5. Taking the lift and descending into the bowels of Panchaea was so memorable. The size of the facility really began to come to life for me.

6. The mannequin room where you fight Namir is just wonderful!

7. And of course the other location you meet Zhao, her main office at the top of TYM. We may have had a long time to get used to it from the video, but it's still an outstanding set.

8. The streets of Detroit!

9. The interior of Sarif Industries.

10. The Milwaukee Junction Sarif facility. It is a really strong design and I always enjoy exploring it.

Honestly, I could name a bunch more (yes, including the gorgeous Convention Center ;)), but those are some that really stand out for me.

The white room was SO weird. It was just like... fighting Namir in Human Anatomy Room, running through hallway... WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON. I actually took a step out of the room the way I came just to make sure I hadn't gone insane.

look at all those beautiful screen shots. i really have no idea why people complain about the graphics. there is bigger problems, like the FINAL LEVEL and how boring it is. (still looks good though)
on my second playthrough i got to panchaea and ran straight through, knowing that i had no challenge ahead of me i found it all pointless, i didnt explore or fight the "zombies". end boss sucks too. what are the chances they patch in soldier enemies? none?

Agreed, although this is off topic a bit, Panchea did look AMAZING with its arctic setting and vertigo inducing hollow centre. The view out of the room you meet Darrow was just jaw dropping but the level itself was badly used, I would have much prefered a mass of guards I had to infiltrate past and then an epic fight with Namir, who would have made a much better end boss story wise anyway.

The zombies were just annoying and ruined how good looking the level's exterior was.

I actually kinda liked the Zombies. I used my P.E.P.S. a bunch on 'em. Not convinced more soldiers would have been better. We fought so many of 'em through the game at that point, the zombies were a nice change.

I won't make up my mind on the matter until I've played the game through for my second time, but my first impression was favorable toward them.

I think on Panchea it would have been plausable to have unhackable bots as your main enemies, since the zombies were more annoying than challenging. But yes, the final level was quite boring

My favorite level from a gameplay perspective would have to be the Belltower Docks just after the Harvester Territory. The path ways in that level were great even if it didn't last long. Another Would be Omega Ranch. That level had alot of ways I could get the objectives done. I loved bringing the turret in from outside and having it mow enemies down! :)

From a graphical standpoint I will have to go with TYM. The over view of Lower HengSha and the beautiful sunrise is amazing. Plus the level gameplay itself was really great. I would have to get a picture, but the room before you reach Zhao really struck a chord with me. I loved it.

P.S: I'm glad someone made a thread that is about the levels in this game. In my opinion, the level design in this game is fantastic. This is coming from someone who hasn't played DX 1.

Jenson's apartment was my favorite place. It was actually the only place you could feel relaxed.

I liked the flow of the Detroit hub better than Hengsha, but I liked the liveliness of Hengsha's streets over the grungy alleyways of Detroit.

+1. However, I have seen DX1, and the levels are very 'video-gamey', kinda like the old skool fps's like Quake or UT1. They're intricate and all, but they are not laid out realistically like DXHR's mostly are.

6th Sep 2011, 21:58
Jensens apartments atmosphere was incredible, the same with the Picus I'd say, in terms of that, I would say these locations just are amazing, then, Hengsha Docks, in terms of level design, it lacked the certain atmosphere, but I think that, even if it was "small" and quite short, it was by FAR the best designed area in Human Revolution.

I have to bite, I thought of HR:s level design as just "only" good, it should have been exceptional, but it just wasn't, only the Docks that I mentioned were really good. Overall I think DX1 had the better level-design.

Yeah maybe its becuase my first two runs are all about stealth and trying to avoid them is just annoying rather than fun and tense like normal enemies.

Once I'm able to murder the lot of them with varrying hilarious ways my mind will change, I understand they are part of the story and I have no problem with that, its just I wish they weren't the last level I think is all.

for me- Tai yong medical. the only level that actually felt DX. why you ask?

1. at the start you have the random encounter with the man in the room with the gas leak.
2. the music was actually good here, for me.
3. the colour blue! and some red too! who would have thought....really wanted to have a swim in that water
4. some nifty secrets like the submerged tunnel, vent shafts only accesible by hacking the maintenance catwalk door and stuff hidden behind sthe big stack of crates.
by this point i was getting really excited that the game was starting to feel very DX, then...
5. EM took it even further by giving us that lovely view of BOTH lower hengsha and upper hengsha.
the cool bit with the lasers, the box guard battle (shame it was easy)
then the unspeakable happened.... the game fell flat on its face shortly after imo. but luckily the combat kept me very entertained until panchaea.

so does anybody else think tai yong medical was the climax of the game?

Really nice shot of Jensen's apartment. I almost wish the game would have let Jensen take a shower and rest on the couch with a glass of whiskey (ala Heavy Rain).

After getting back to the apartment post-Picus, I just stood there letting the music and atmosphere wash over me as I looked out the window.

I notice you are using post-processing Pinky. I turned it off for my second play-through and I think I like it better off. Makes the world feel more crisp and colorful.

Visually perhaps, but I think Belltower docks and Singapore facility were excellent (if not best) maps gameplay wise. I really loved Maintenance Block 12, but it was too short!

Here, let me present my opinion:
1. Tai Yong Medical (visuals & atmosphere, shivers)
2. Belltower Docks (freedom)
3. Singapore (freedom, size)
--
997. Harvester's Hideout (not too shabby, but parking halls just aren't really exciting environments)
998. Picus (repetitive boring gray office complex, despite the MJ12 references)
999. Panachea (zombies)

I did not play Tong's rescue.

Does anyone have a good screenshot at that aquarium vent shaft down at the Pangu? That place were just.. beautiful. I could have stayed there for a very long time (which I probably did before going through with the game ;^)

As many others have already said, Adams appartment were just awesome. Especially when the blinds goes up and let in the city lights.

I also loved Tai Yong Medical the first level with the incredible view over Hengsha and that mysterious park down below. The music there were mezmerising. I have a saved point there just to go back and listen to the music and enjoying view and sunlight.

Yes :P Ahhh I love the white room. I love the art style of this game so much actually, they really did an amazing job.. Also the pics Zakka posted reminded me how brilliant the sniper rifle looks. Not sure what it is about it... just looks REALLY good. Looks very practical / clean and not overly sci-fi / overdetailed. repetition of some shapes helps too. And hard surfaces, not all curved barrels and stocks.

Anyway personally I loved TYM, White room, Picus, Adams Apartment and a few other places visually. Also (gay mode activated) I don't think I ever saw a boring lamp / light in the game. Everything was really abstract. Lighting was actually another plus for the level design.

This. Especially when you realize that the devs populated the distant corridors (that you never get to visit) with NPC's. They really tried to create a sense of place.

As atmospheric as Lower Hengsha was, I was disappointed at how few missions it had.

Adam's apartment is great. I would love if they managed to place a few DLC packages (missions, maybe a new hub) into the main game, so that you could return to it a little more often and gain a greater attachment to the place. For some reason, I also liked Omega Ranch.

Does anyone have a good screenshot at that aquarium vent shaft down at the Pangu?

Is you talking about this one?

@pinky powers

Oh yes please. Could you take one screenshot more a little to the left, without the gun? That would make my day complete.

Afraid not. My current play-through is already in Picus... so not really able to revisit and take more screens.

I never found that place.

I missed it in my first play-through. You have to be very vent-minded to find it. There's no real reason to go into the vent that leads you there, save for the sake of discovery.

But when you do find it, you orgasm in the rhythm of some atavistic crescendo.

I've played through the game 6 times and I STILL haven't found that place.
WHERE IS IT?

Something about Jensen's apartment and the music gave me a Bladerunner feeling. Maybe it was the shades. It was great.

Lower Hengsha was very detailed and immersive. Kudos.

Alice Garden Pods was an interesting place. Made me wonder if such things exist or if they will.

Level 1 of the TYM Augmentation Storage area/lower factory.

One end of the vent is just west of the security station, high up on the wall. You need to lug a crate to get into it from this end.

In order to access the other opening: From the initial room with the 2 scientists and the Belltower guy: Go right, down the stairs, take the stairs all the way down. Hang a right, then another right, onto the walkway over the pool, then look slightly rightwards. You'll see a tall white crate. Move it out of the way. There's the vent cover.

I found this area in my first playthrough! Whatswrongwitchu? :poke:

I wanted to jump into the water, but I guess that's not possible..
(Sidetrack: Used to be terrified of water before, even in games. Would not go near it and when I accedently went in I had to shut down and hyper ventilate. Not Anymore. Thanks to Deus Ex augmentation Aqua lung, and among other things, I managed to start being quite comfortable in water.)

On topic: I also started to take a liking at the junkyard at DRB's territory. When I for the first time ever entered that place I missed out on that yard, because I entered through the roof, went all the way down to the sewers, and then went all the way up again, onto another roof. Scond time I was there sneaking around. Just awesome place for sneaking.

You have some mad speedplaying skillz, I'm still not halfway through my second run (haven't found that vent the first time around neither).

Anyh00, in order of preference:

Jensen's apartment - one of the finest moments of character-building in videogames, imo. I admit when I got to the bedroom, and the music started, and I saw cards on the dresser and drugs in the bathroom, my throat tightened.:(

Hengsha docks

Derelict row - I'm surprised it gets mentioned so little, I just loved its desperate, bare feel.

The first time I went in the apartment was one of the most memorable moments of the game. Beautiful. The photos, the cards, the sandwich left by the computer. Finding the broken mirror. The loneliness. Amazing. This was done so right.

The view of upper Hengsha was stunning as well, shame we didn't get a closer look.

Most of the views were great now I think of it.

I really did love this game :)

As far and visuals go the beginning of TYM was my favorite, it had that cell shaded look I wish they used a bit more of throughout the game to compensate for the poor textures. However on a side note, if i remember correctly I got access to a restricted area by telling a guard I was "here to fix the pipes" Really? a god damn super human is here to fix the pipes? Go on through sir.

As far as over all atmosphere i'd say Hensha, it felt very alive compared to the rest and the rooftops were awesome. Although I didn't get why in a time of chaos and conspiracy stores were left unwatched or locked.

And when it comes to the action i'd go with the docks and Singapore. I liked the docks more but it was alot shorter.

I've always been disappointed with Derelict Row. I'm not sure why, but it seems boring to me. I explore, but there's nothing to really find and no one to talk to.

The city:
The overal glow of the city as I looked out almost every window was realy nice. I don't realy understand when ppl crying about (just generally, I have not read it here unless skipped it)the yellow/orange colors. This tone give a city a vibe. I try to imagine the same location with blue/marine coloring. Just don't have the same cyber effect on me.

Adam's room:
It is kind of personal and add so much to the whole story to see where he lives, what his style. Like the baroque pattern here and there. Something similar then his coat shoulder's pattern. Nice touch. In this appartment I feel relaxed, swithed off from a daily trouble even so the TV is there so never truly block what the world looks like outside.

White room:
Oh yes. That was an interesting turn in atmosphere. I find it 'out of caracter' of the whole game to step into a room where so much pureness. It was so nice and tidy with wonderful textures and patterns. (baroque again) But here I have to add, I kind of had a dejavu. Not long ago I played Bioshock2 and when I reached Sofia's office everything was so nice pastel colored with lovely curtains and white walls. That was so opposite with a rest of the place in the game where everything was rusting and almost hostile.
