I saw this about 30 mins ago... after searching quite a bit as I didn't watch any of the conferences... they rarely show anything that is worth me putting aside time to watch.

Having said that, Tomb Raider is shaping up quite well. That's all I think I need to see, maybe a bit of combat then I wont watch any more gameplay.:D

Seems to have a good camera this time around!

For a girl fresh out of college (and with no experience at all), she looks very athletic. Just look at those jumps. I'm her age and I can't do that. :hmm:

It's really nice to see a bit of the old Lara in the new and younger one. Looks like we won't be totally saying goodbye to her old self. :)

It looks amazing yes, but one thing i don't really like is her voice still

she kinda sounds like a whiny spoiled brat. I know she's young and this is a very dire situation, but the way she's like "oh!" "let go!" and talking to herself as she's going through is not very lara-esque at all. Idk...still very excited for the game tho

I think the point of this is, not just her age but her inexperience, all this before Lara became an established explorer and had the capability to handle duress. So we're going to witness the growth of her character, as her experiences mature her into the Lara we know.

Some respect I agree, though I put up with people with more annoying voices... though I have been more annoyed if she took it in her stride I guess.

But hasn't she always talked to herself? Or is that just something on odd occasion I do?

The graphics are amazing, but my concern is that the gameplay looks VERY linear with no room for exploration. Maybe that's just because this is the beginning of the game, though, so they're keeping things simple. I do hope that the pathways open up a bit more.

For a girl fresh out of college (and with no experience at all), she looks very athletic. Just look at those jumps. I'm her age and I can't do that. :hmm:

Minus the jumping (which always will be a bit dramatic in games), she was more tossed around by the environment and just barely surviving it, than making any special moves. However, even though she has no experience raiding tombs, that doesn't mean she's not in good shape, or hasn't been practicing gymnastics since probably she was 4, or 5. :)

Thanks for posting this, as I missed the beginning of it earlier. Really is amazing. I love the real human feel it all has with her reacting to everything like an actual human being would. This is a brand new level of making games immersive and bringing characters to life. Awesome :thumb:

Edit:

But hasn't she always talked to herself? Or is that just something on odd occasion I do?

She sure has. Either on her PDA to the team, or making journal entries, or noting something odd about a wall, etc. She's never been silent.

I think I'd have to play it with the sound turned off (a) to stop hearing New Lara talking to herself all the time and (b) cos that bit sounded a bit like a porno at times with all the moans and squeaks. The actual gameplay looks a bit like Legend and reminds of the quickie movie tie-in games (anyone ever play Disney's Hercules?) they used to release. But they claim it's only a demo deliberately made linear, so I guess the real game will be more like an actual game and less like an interactive film.

(Is "New Lara" the correct phrase to distinguish her from the other Lara?)

As I was rewatching the demo, I got this same feeling of bliss just like before the infamous TRAOD was released. And I got traumatized by it.

Bah. I doubt the people up top will disappoint us. The demo (even during its alpha stage) looks very, very promising. :)

Minus the jumping (which always will be a bit dramatic in games), she was more tossed around by the environment and just barely surviving it, than making any special moves.

Now that you pointed it out, I noticed that she jumps like TRL Lara. O_O

Game play looks good, and the graphics are solid, though I hope they'll ramp a bit for the PC version. The game does look to be unmissable, though, which I'm glad to see.

Well, the demo didn't really blow me away. I expected it would and I was very excited about it.

I've seen some parts that were really awesome, for example, the passage through collapsing cave.
I don't fancy the camera, to be honest.

I don't know if it's me but it seems as if the were using the "fish eye effect" or whatever it's called.

Her animations are a bit weird especially the jumping and climbing.

There's still a lot of work ahead for CD, that's for sure.
I don't want to judge the game yet.

I kinda understand now that they let Keeley go; her voice wouldn't work here, she sounds way too dignified for this. But still the voice doesn't feel quite right, for me at least.

I also think it's gonna be rather humourless. She's doing a lot of moaning and screaming but I can't imagine her saying something like: "Oh this is why I hate mondays!" or "Problem, we have a Houston!"

The environment looks so stunning and detailed and love the new bit of puzzles and environment interaction. Unbelieveably good and I can't wait to start exploring.

On the negative the camera angle seems too close to Lara, her new look only appears so-so and the fast running and jumping seem a little too much for inexperienced Lara. The main problem though is that her voice really dosn't seem right and too much of that screaming might wear thin after a while.

Sina_Croft
7th Jun 2011, 08:57
I guess the screaming will wear off as this is probably her first encounter. After this she will be more prepared and toughened up, I think.

For the jumping and running, yeah, for someone hurted like that, wow! But maybe you can say it's the adrenaline and survival instinct to push her to the extreme or something.

Hey, if I'm hunted up, I will and can jump far and high (I hope/suppose!), as I'm pushed to the edge, or how do you call it. And I don't really have a condition :p or look athletic.

If someone is determined to survive, they will survive :)

And for the graphics, some things do look bad :p But it's alpha right? They got 1.5 year to work on all that :)

In the opening scene where Lara is trapped in a cocoon/ropes, she is hanging next to an altar with candles and a large emblem. This may mean she was supposed to be a sacrifice offered by the natives of the island to a god or an unknown creature in the cave. Later on, there are more human sacrifices (probably shipwrecked sailors) hanging next to candles and emblems. Lara is attacked later, by a native trying to recapture her or a cannibal wanting his dinner ? Or, maybe it was a future companion on the island also trapped there. This is really great stuff.
I love the stunning visuals. Underground rivers, broken parts from salvaged ships that Lara uses to light up the cave. Water falls down off the camera lens as she surfaces from the water. Brilliant! And when Lara gets badly wounded we do feel the pain she is in. The sense of danger is great as well, as the cavern begins to collapse around her as she struggles to escape. Finally, when she emerges, I counted at least 8 shipwrecks on the coast. There are probably many more strewn on the rocks and hopefully full of stuff that Lara can salvage for survival. Other photos show us that she uses a large bow and a intricately made knife to survive.
It is too early to tell what the gameplay will be like. CD appear to have sorted out the camera problems from TRU, so far. Sure, the camera is close in parts. But, it would be if she is stuck in a confined space. On a negative note, I have read many comments from Game Trailers complaining about Lara's excessive moaning and screaming. I agree. One gamer said he even turned the sound down it was so bad. CD take note. I have played all the TR games and Lara is supposed to be a heroic survivor not a whimpering little girl.
This game has the potential to be awesome and one to match the gameplay of Uncharted 2. I hope we get a chance to play a Beta next year. That would really help the QA team before the final release.

I see several complaints about the fact that Lara appears to be too good at running and jumping for somebody who is supposed to be inexperienced. That may be true, but I don't care. This is a game, and it's supposed to be fun. I really don't think it would be much fun to control somebody who gets winded every five seconds and who can't jump more than two feet. I'll sacrifice some realism in exchange for a character that's fun to control. Besides, we don't know her full back story yet-- maybe she was a gymnast before starting this adventure

Anyway, I watched the video again last night, and I really do like the atmosphere of it. I have mixed feelings about her excessive screaming/talking. On one hand, I like it because it humanizes her-- it gives her a personality that was lacking in the original Core games where she just ran around in complete silence. On the other hand, it did seem a BIT overdone at times. I suspect it will get toned down once the adventure properly starts (i.e., after she leaves that cave.)

Anyway, I'm definitely feeling optimistic about this game based on what I've seen.

I watched this video yesterday and was amazed

But yeah, I agree with all you guys that the moaning is a bit too much. If it's only at the start, though, and Lara toughens up as the game advances, then it wouldn't be a problem.

If they removed the jumping, it wouldn't be tomb raider.

LOL her talking to herself.
Sure she's talked to herself, but it was always to gather her thoughts on clues.

Seeing her paranoid is entertaining, and I can get over how annoying it might seem because of how funny it is. In a good way of course.

not even the 40 year old lara in underworld make them and she did jumping like that at 20?!

Found out about this vid yesterday, But I was'n't home and I could only use my phone to get on internet, not to watch videos.... :(

But now that I've seen it, I'm amazed! It looked fantastic! THey could indeed cut down the moaning a bit, but whatever, I'll get over it :D

And people, remember: This is still in a stage of development, In the final version the graphics will probably be even better and she might have another voice actress(didn't one of the producers say this was just a placeholder or something?)

Now, I WANT MORE!!!!! :D

I loved the trailer but as alot of people seem to be saying, the voicing was a bit meh. According to a lot of the comments on youtube, a number of people who overheard the gameplay footage without seeing it thought the user was watching porn.

If you listen to it again, you can tell why. It kind of fetishizes Lara's terror.

New video is OUTSTANDING. Everything I see gets me more and more excited for the game. I just wish it didn't rely so heavily on quicktime events. Though Karl says this early look isn't indicative of the sum gameplay experience.

And speaking of Gamespot, I'm a regular there as well (just recently became a mod there 8) ) and I can tell you, what was shown at E3 has generated A LOT of buzz!! Especially from people who said they gave up on the series long ago, are finding renewed interest once again. It's gotten loads of compliments on the graphics and overall visual direction of the game.

In fact I've seen more than a few saying Tomb Raider just got on their top 5 most wanted lists :D It gets me excited to hear that. This fore tells of Tomb Raider's return to glory :D

Ok guys, I noticed something that might be an in-game help if you don't know what to do or where to go besides that highlight option... Notice at 5:20 when Lara is walking up those wooden floors to get to that elevator thingy, there are some RED wooden floors, almost like they're pointing where you should go. When she walks at the top, there is something like a red door pointing at the elevator which again has some red paint on it... And when she needs to push that big crate that makes everything explode, again red paint, and the wooden floor which lead to the crate are red... I mean, I might be wrong, but that red paint really sticks out, and another reason why I noticed this is this: have you ever played Mirror's Edge? White buldings with red doors or red planks showing you the way... What do you guys think?

And yeah, I could be wrong, I can't say because this is just the beginning, but... :D

P.S. You can see those red wooden plates in the thumbnail of the video, on the right.

Good eye. I didn't even notice. Reminds me of "The Sixth Sense".

And have you guys noticed that now after the E3, Tomb Raider is at least a nominee in many categories as best stage demo, best trailer, best graphics and so on in gamespot and gametrailers. That´s really great news, right? That signals to me that the pros and gaming world really took notice of the game :D

And being nominated in those categories with arkham city, uncharted3 and bioshock and what not. Thats just mind blowing.

Also nominated for a few "best of e3" awards.

And Tomb Raider also won many of those nominations. TR is finally getting the attention and appreciation that it deserves...

So, Karl said in an interview for Gamereactor (http://www.gamereactor.eu/news/7960/Crystal+talk+Lara's+Survival+Instinct/) that:

- The new Survival Instinct mode won't be there the entire game... It will fade away as we progress... (but still, make it optional) And, it is there for player to understand the new world Lara is in, so when we do that, we say: "I don't need it anymore", something like that :p

- Combat should be introduced to us later this year.

-After we 'digest' (which is happening right now) the new Lara and the new TR, they're gonna hit us with the exploration, it's gonna be openworld-ish XD He said that they don't want players to be locked from ledge to ledge, something like that.

-And lots of more secrets later on!

What do you guys think? :D

"Openworld-ish"? Eh, I hope this isn't like when they said there was going to be more paths in Underworld than before... It was still very linear and I was disappointed. Hopefully it won't be like that, but the game being openworld is something that's high on my list.

Sounds promising, but it's too early for me to say "yay" or "nay". Think I'll wait for more footage.

d1n0_xD

The reason why I said openworld-ish is this: I watched another interview with Karl and he said the it isn't an open world game but they created a non-linear system that allows us to go in and out of different location as we wish on the island, but every location has it's own story and experience ^^ Hope that clears some things :D

Aaand, as I said earlier, the Survival Instinct mode will be useful at the beginning, so we[players] can learn about how the physics work, the fire and all sorts of things like footprints etc. and later on we will become less reliable on that mode, so we can do things on our own. But still, optional is the way to go, some players want to be on their own from the very beginning :D Damn, I'm excited :D

No, I'm afraid not. As far as I know, it's gonna be there at the beginning, and eventually fade away.

But, that's what worries me. CD said nearly the same exact thing last time around but the environments, while pretty, were disappointing in the sense that there were only a few different ways though the levels. I'm just concerned this will turn out the same way.

8th Jul 2011, 20:19
Well, it kinda comes to waiting and finding out, doesn't it? The way I see it, there won't be any like prepared levels, we have like 10 locations on the island and we get to choose which one we want to try first. Maybe it's like that, I don't know. My question is, do we get to explore even more within those locations? We're just have to wait and see.

JRod108
9th Jul 2011, 12:57
Well, yes, of course it does. I'm not about to give this game prophesies of doom just because I'm worried about it. It's just that, I'm worried and I don't think my concerns will be eased until I've see. The combat and open-worldishness.

WOW!!!! That article about the leeches is awesome!!!! I love that her injuries affect Lara's response in the gameplay!!!!!

Just in case, I asked Meagan in the official TR blog if this info is legit!!! :thumb:

Yeah, when I read about those leeches, my jaws hit the floor :D And the way whoever played and wrote this described the situation, Lara not able to run, and the finding out about them is just awesome :D And did you see those wounds? Clothes are definitely changing and tearing, so, that can go off the wishlist :p

You are right...if this is confirmed (and it looks like it already is), then that will pretty much end any speculation regarding Lara's clothing...means I don't think we'll be seeing "classic Lara" as an option at all here. I especially like the confirmaiton of the progressive damage during the course of the game...can't get much more realistic than that and still be a game.

Anyway, thanks for clearing things up Driber!

I can't stop watching this. I know graphics might not be exact, because all games when we see a first preview are awesome with graphics. Just watching it though makes me want to play it now. It sucks it doesn't come out until next year but that means they can work on it longer and hopefully get what most of us want into the game.

I really like this game so far Special thanks for Crystal Dynamics for their hard work i liked the trailer and the gameplay demo i can't wait for fall 2012

i actually think the ( so called moaning makes it seem more realistic ) and to be honest what guy would not enjoy hearing those moans from a girl

the gameplay is ofcourse unrealistic it's a fiction story not real so you can't expect the character to Break her foot after one jump that would be totally lame wouldn't it

And NO i don't work for Crystal Dynamics ( unfortunatley ) All the rights for my name go to the company i just chose it because i'm a fan

Regards to everyone on the team from a loyal fan :)
