Meet Neil Harbisson, the world's first legally-recognised cyborg.

The story of Neil Harbisson is one for the ages. Born with a rare vision disorder called achromatopsia, this British-born, Barcelona resident saw the world only in black and white.

That was until 2003, when he collaborated with Adam Montandon, Associate Professor of Innovation at Denmark's Erhvervsakademiet Lillebælt institute. Together, they created a revolutionary device called the 'eyeborg'. Fixed on the wearer's head, the eyeborg converts light waves (colour) into sound waves. This effectively gives one the ability to hear colour.

He talks to Roshni Nair about the untapped potential of cybernetics and the need to make technology more intrinsic.

Latest Technology (Real Life)

A sensational breakthrough: the first bionic hand that can feel

The first bionic hand that allows an amputee to feel what they are touching will be transplanted later this year in a pioneering operation that could introduce a new generation of artificial limbs with sensory perception...

Deus Ex: Human Revolution's viral 'Sarif Industries' website discovered
by Richard Mitchell on Dec 3rd 2010, joystiq.com

What is an upcoming video game without a viral marketing website? Nothing, that's what. Enter the website for Sarif Industries, which appears to be nothing more than your average site for a cybernetic implant manufacturer (you know the type). After a few minutes of fooling around with the site, however, a hacking minigame begins, tasking users with avoiding security measures and retrieving data files.

The reward: Images and information about the cybernetic augmentations available in Deus Ex: Human Revolution. As marketing sites go, it's pretty nifty. If you're in the market for some new robotic limbs, check it out.

ETHICS

We work not only to revolutionize the very nature of the human body, but to create better and more capable people that have the power to make the world a better place.

We believe in a free humanity, where people and companies work without regulations, where the progress of civilization is determined by unbridled human endeavor.

We are Sarif Industries.

"We understand the deep responsibilities we have to not only our employees, our investors, and our consumers - but also our species as a whole. With the most advanced technologies being developed under our roof, we are committed to ensuring that everything we do is for the betterment of humanity. For the betterment of the world".

Classic. Some of the best years of my gaming life, right there.

Supposedly there is a new Mechwarrior in the works somewhere out there. After the long, dark age of Microsoft butchering the franchise, I'm holding out for a glorious return...although if it suffers the same fate Deus Ex appears to have endured, then it might be better off left for dead.

Sorry to hijack the thread. Just brought back great memories. Back on topic...

Well, part of the fun of paying that hacking game is finding it on the website. "Game" might not be the right word. Think of it more as a special discovery that you are rewarded with for dilligent exploration; something Adam might do in the "real" DX:HR.

I don't want to spoil it by telling others where it is. But I did PM you.

Nassif is vastly different from Sarif. But yes, they seem similar... also of note is the concentration on nieces.

Deus Ex had a daughter-father thing going a few times... Savage and Renton.

So I can't help but notice the two positions available under the careers tab, one of course corresponding to Adam (Security Personnel for R&D) the other could possibly be the identity of our mystery girl (Project Lead for HET Research)

I only suggest this because from what we've seen of her in the trailer she is apparently in the same room, or very close to Adam during his defenestration and the add is prompting for one with a strong background in augmentation. If they both joined at about the same time it could add to the fact they may have a history together, or would at least have seen each other if working in close proximity.

Anything else you guys catch? Besides the weird look Sarif is giving us in his mug shot.

No, it's just that after they did all the research for the game they realized they could actually start an augmentation company in real life and start off the revolution (and make lots of money).

I mentioned this in the other thread, but it's so obvious to me: The hacking game is Pac-Man. Dead on 100%. I don't completely think this is a bad thing, but I hope there is more to it in the actual real game. I really don't want to play Pac-Man to open doors over and over. Occasionally it would be fun, but I hope there is more depth to it.

There is depth to it. Hacking ability is affected by your hacking aug, and possibly other augs, and there seems to be a resource system of programs that stop the tracer, etc.

I s'pose my only complaint would be (suggestion, rather) that it's difficult to determine which directions certain arrow-controlled paths take to or from nodes. The arrows are so small, it's easy to confuse which way certain paths are supposed to take you, especially when you're being pursued by the MCP. But maybe that's part of the difficulty.

Saying it's like Pac-Man is insulting to Pac-Man, in my opinion. You can actually see your goal in Pac-Man, so you can make calculated moves to successfully complete levels. With only small areas of the grid visible in this hacking game, it just turns into arbitrary exploration instead of thoughtful strategy.

If your going to clone a classic, do it right! Of course they have already shown they have problems in that regard. :p

Happily, nothing about HR makes me think of IW, perhaps apart from the two tiered city- but that's certainly not a bad thing. I dug it out last week, and I'd forgotten how entertaining and atmospheric it was. It's a really good game.

The website is great! I really like the design of it. I wish more contemporary websites were actually made like that :)

The hacking mini-game I also think is very good. Compared to the average game's mini-game, I'd give it a 10/10. On dixieflatline's scale of almost-impossibly high-to-meet expectations, I'd give it a 8/10.

Short version of paragraph below: I hope the hacking is a bit more complex in the actual game, with your hacker augs.

By more complex, I mean if the game had certain 'programs' you needed to bust out with a keypress (after finding or buying them in the gameworld) that were needed to disengage specific type of anti-programs (such as different / higher level 'black ice' blobs in the game, or other AI personalities --would be really cool if there was a re-occuring security program that comes to try to stop you some time) then the game would even better. For ex., you buy a red program, and and a magneta program in a shady black market, that you can bust out against certain computers (or randomly) that launch the corresponding anti-program against you, that would be cool.

What would be ultimatley cool IMHO would be 2-6 or so multiple computer AI programs that you come up against in the gameworld, (could be based on different fake anti-viral software packages, or different defense-AI strains) that would change the hacking game mildly.

Nice job EM !

Happy thanks for posting this, I notice an aug similar to Ballistic, but I don't remember that in the review, checking the other thread now...

EDIT: Ah, ok they call it Defense aug, which sounds like ADS in DX1, but is actually more like Ballistic.

So we can move Defense aug from Speculated to Confirmed I presume.

Nassif is vastly different from Sarif. But yes, they seem similar... also of note is the concentration on nieces.

Deus Ex had a daughter-father thing going a few times... Savage and Renton.

i think the name is really funny.

a Sarif is what you call the pokey bits at the ends of a letter, they can add style and function to a type face. so their augmentations are like sarifs for the human body

That's a serif. The character's name more likely comes from this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharif).

Sharīf (Arabic: شريف‎ /šarīf/) or Chérif is a traditional Arab tribal title given to those who serve as the protector of the tribe and all tribal assets, such as property, wells, and land. In origin, the word is an adjective meaning "noble", "highborn".

Yes yes. I thought it sounded old middle-eastern, or even biblical. I thought it might have been an angelic species at fist, but I couldn't quite place it.

I thought it might have been an angelic species at fist, but I couldn't quite place it.

Most definitely. Individually called a Seraph, Seraphim for plural.

"Literally "burning ones", the word is normally a synonym for serpents when used in the Hebrew bible, but they are mentioned in the Book of Isaiah as fiery six-winged beings attending on God."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seraph

The name Sarif and its origins mentioned above are linked to this idea of the Seraph angel: "...The Seraphim belong to the highest order, or angelic choir, of the Christian angelic hierarchy."

This may sound a bit wierd, but has anyone else noticed similarities between the sarif hand/eye and the hand in the statue of liberty lobby? I think it might be a sort of hidden reference to Sarif giving people liberty in the form of biomechanical augs. Tell me what you think.

he/she meant Versalife, maybe?

But that was an evil, controlling hand, not a liberty-y hand...I understand what he means about the formation of the hand, and it looks kind of like the grip of the statue of liberty's actual hand, but I think it's more meant to represent the old poses of hands in renaissance paintings, sculptures, etc., representing a new rebirth in humanity and all that.

Imagine where we'd be if religions were never created.

We wouldn't exist in the first place because creating religions was a natural part of our cultural evolution, it's how we came up with ways to explain the world around us. Some 800,000 yrs ago our ancestors would explain thunders as the angry farts of an upset god. An awesome god I must say, if such god farts thunders.

PS: the lightning bolts were episodes of explosive diarrhea.

Imagine where we'd be if religions were never created.

I doubt anything would be any different. The reason some historians believe the fall of the empire set us back 500-1000 years is because they were beginning to advance at a very significant pace. it's speculated that if they had been allowed to continue at the pace they were on, they probably would have developed the steam engine in a couple hundred years. and following the pace technology advanced at, that would have had them mastering the atom, developing rockets and space travel around the millennium, and would have hit the information age before 1100.

besides, it was religion in the form of monks in abbey's that preserved much of the art, literature, math, history and science from antiquity. If not for them and the Arabs, most of it probably would have been lost.

Which ones? There were the crusades, but even that was really just justified by religion, and was really about conflicting cultures, land, and power. There may have been a lot of wars where religion was a factor and was certainly important, but I would hardly say it causes a lot, more like provides extra motivation for a lot. Most wars are driven primarily by greed, imperialism, and desire for power. Religion works its way in in a lot of cases, but let's be honest, it's rarely really the CAUSE.

This may or may not have been mentioned before, but I was reading the fake new stories on this site and I noticed that the latest one reorts that "World Health Organisation unveils complete Center for Research in Viral Genetics and Biological Sciences, dubbed "Omega Ranch". This sounds like a game location to me, especially after the slightly spoilery info in the latest hands-on:

Megan is working on a subject whose genes stop his body rejecting augmetics. If she can figure out how and apply this to the population - via a geneticaly engineered viral treatment, I bet - anyone can become augmented. I bet Megan worked at Omega Ranch prior to the game, and you'll have to race Barret and co to get there to retreive/destroy her data.

On the Sarif site they talk about people who need drugs to manage their augmentations so that they won't die from rejection of new parts. Then they talk of a test to determine if you are aug-able or not. Yet in the new scans I read yesterday it seems that everyone who gets an augmentation needs to take those drugs except for the girl who for some reason doesn't need it. so does this mean Jensen has to constantly take these drugs in the game or is he living with his biotics drug free?

Scans here:

I think I would be able to sell the company as real if they cut out the music and had a less comical start up page. For instance if they showed the hand or leg on its own and next to it showed a photo of a person actually using it. I think I would be able to sell the company as real if they cut out the music and had a less comical start up page.

I like the start-up page, but I agree that the site would be more convincing as "real" if the music is dropped.
Having said that, the music is awesome so I'm glad it's there.

The com is nice, but I hope they do not advertize it publicly on TV without any warning. I know it is to work as a viral marketing, but this is a touchy subject - think of all those diabled people after serious accidents getting sudden hopes only to discover it is just a game. The company could be, actually, sued, I think?

Besides, I do not like the "you have never experienced before" part - it suggests that augmentations are aimed for those people who lead a normal life before only, not for the disabled ones. I thought the initial purpose of all mechanical limbs and such is to help the unfortunate ones? I understand that there is this augs for all debate in the game too, but the cause and effect is slightly mashed up here, as far as I am concerned.

Otherwise, a very nice commercial, gives you an idea about the game's problems and controversies - when I saw the guy taking a photo for the girl, I thought "that's so wrong!"

I do too. For me it really cements the ethical issues of the augmentation process. It shows how it could just enhance your life (much like how having all communications on a single device today is so much easier), how you can get the edge over your competition, or how it could possibly help the disabled.

I can see how traumatic it could be for someone to have been forcibly put to one side of this issue (especially seeing as how once you've lost an organic component it cannot be regained...at that point in time)

Online games for their notorious addicts neglecting children, attacking parents for not letting them play and so on. I am pretty sure there must've been something else.
On a related matter, Mortal Kombat is another candidate this year. Yet this is all Postal/Carmegeddon kind of controversy.

Because *gasp* some girls like it. But don't expect the ACL to comprehend such a notion, let alone the thought that adults should be free to access whatever content they desire (within legal bounds) with their money.

I hope we get an R-rating for games soon, and ice those bible-thumping authoritarians out. Their resistance to an R-rating is as absurd as when they hassled the classification board to ban A-cup women from posing for nude spreads. That popular "think of the children!" argument is hokum. Adults bear the responsibility of deciding what content minors in their care are able to view in the home, not government.

Trainwreck is inquiring where is PC media and/or the demo, as you can easily infer by taking a look at your previous post. In that post you quote Trainwreck complaining that we get TV Spots and not PC media or demo. Replying to that with "It's not one or the other," you set up the semantic link as "TV spots" being the 'other' to "PC media and/or demo," and vice versa. Since Trainwreck is obviously aware of where to find TV spots, when he is inquiring about the other, it implies PC media and/or demo. Trainwreck's usage of the word "other" as a noun is entirely correct and is not ambiguous when entire exchange is taken into consideration.

Would you like me to post a Wikipedia link on fundamentals of logic?

I am not surprised, you could see such opinions coming. BUT: I just caught myself at a mistake. I can't say my opinion of him changed - after all I do not know the guy. From what I know, he can be a completely decent guy (except of this little note of arrogance maybe - could be the internet though, it wakes publicly dormant *******s in people; not that I necessarily see it here ;) ).
So let me write it again - I see his WORK here in a more negative way. He tries to copy the EM team relation to the forum relation, which simply doesn't work, because there is a big discrepancy between what they know/have seen and what we know/have seen. What I see is frustrated forum users leaving and the growing division US and THEM, which never is good. I see no work with the community, except for posting of the regular podcats. Mods post more DX-related info. It is as simple as that. A solution could be very simple? A CM riddle thread. He describes an item from the game, gives some info through it, even if it is only the appearance, the community tries to guess. Interactivity - check. Work done - check. The community engaged - check. Just a simple thought, I can't believe EM or Cm himself can't get creative.

EDIT: I already commented on the video, nobody responded, so I have a clear conscience :D

Never joke about someone's serious post, unless you intend to anger them, or believe they could not mistake your comment for negativity, since there is no difference on the receiving end whatsoever on the Internet, between mocking and good-natured teasing, even between good friends, if only for the public exchange in view of multitudes, which anonymity doesn't really offer protection from, when there are actual reputations that benefit and harm on a gray scale.

Trainwreck
14th Apr 2011, 04:56
I am not angered by CoyoteGrey, so I hope no one else gets too angry on my account (not that anyone is; EM's treatment of this forum and the DX community is abominable).

Want to know how to alienate the people who intend to buy and promote your game most fervently? Look at the past few years of this forum.

On the other hand, want to see how to get people to preorder your games and be excited to promote them via word-of-mouth even BEFORE they are released? Follow the Valve model.

I happily preordered Portal 2. As a sequel, I know it's going to be good-as-gold, since they followed and amplified what made the original so great. They didn't pull tricks like dividing content and giving it to certain retailers while withholding from others. They didn't give Portal fans the middle finger.

In fact, they even gave them an ARG in which people actually had to pay $35 to participate in, and people gladly doled out the cash to do it. The reward? We might get Portal 2 a few days early! How cool of them is that? To top it all off, if you buy the PS3 version through Steam, you also get the PC version free!

Contrast this to Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The community was shunned, people are basically given the finger on the official forums by moderators and even official EM reps, and we are still expected to preorder even though they've hacked the game up so that people who buy from Gamestop, Walmart, or Steam are getting less of a game overall. And even though their viral/ARG marketing is free, we are unlikely to get anything substantial from it. Way to fail, guys.

Deus_Ex_Machina

I think the general lack of information, especially concerning PC gameplay footage as well as demo information, as well as the information being given to us in a not-so-timely manner is really starting to get to people, and I can't say I blame them.

As they say, you reap what you sow.

To be perfectly honest, I see these forums being dead overall after release. I seriously doubt you'll see more than a few original DX fans on here for much longer (how many of us are left here?).

Whoever is in charge of censorship in Australia must have been frozen in 1920 and thawed for now just to be a prick

Such a change requires approval of the Attorney-General from each state. Last time it went to a vote, the Australian Christian Lobby put the squeeze on South Australia's AG and he vetoed an R-rating. He got hammered at the ballot box and turfed as a result. The ACL will continue to push hard against it, because they don't think adults should be allowed to access violent and sexual content with their money. One could argue that the Bible is both.

Often the games they want to ban I wouldn't want to buy, i'm no huge fan of gratuitous and gory violence quite frankly, but obviously that's not the point. It's the principle of it not being treated as an equal form of media to movies, books etc. The morning show interviews about the issue really bug me though, it's a bunch of non-gamers and some sort of lobbyist that do their best to make the gamer being interviewed feel stupid, and the gamer totally wussing out and doing a terrible job of presenting their point of view in an adult way. Gamers in Australia really need an eloquent, well presented representative with a pair.

It depends on who the producers of those programs actually call in to drop sound-bites. As an example, there was a Good Friday gig scheduled here in Melbourne that got turfed after a bunch of bible-thumpers moaned to the state government. Anyway... Larry Emdur and co. ran a hatchet-job on the matter, claiming producers had invited the organisers and received no response. They had done no such thing.

That's actually a pretty good idea. There is no way Bible will pass the current censorship if it is required to. Get a few large stores pull bibles off the shelves, and you're on the road to softer censorship rules.

This statement is far-fetched. The moderators aren't members of staff for starters, so why would we give the finger?
Because you are the Eidos-Jugend. :p

MI, the real problem is that there is a big split between EM and community. People who are seen as somebody who should be supporting community, like Coyotegrey and the mods, are still pushing EM's agenda. I know the mods aren't doing that because they are told to, but that's how it will be taken by a lot of people.

And yes, Coyotegrey is actually at the employ of the EM, but community manager should at least pretend that he cares more about community than his employer. That's how you get a community you can interact with, and get something useful out of it for the company.

To be fair, I think Kyle does a pretty good job liaising with the community. He obviously has to work within a certain set of limitations which aren't making his job easy. We're (for the most part) discerning customers with a pretty simple set of expectations, and the marketing goons don't seem to get it.

I'll grant you that the recent trend of "wait and see" posts is fluff. We understand that they have a marketing plan; it'll be great, the fans will be happy, everybody will piss rainbows and cry tears of gold. But without information, or even a timetable for said information, silence is the best option.

Kyle faces the occasional ****storm because he's the only visible EM presence on this, the official forum. He's made to deal with a lot of grievances that really shouldn't be landing on his lap. I appreciate that, in spite of disgruntled fans and a (let's be kind) marketing plan that appears to lack flexibility, he keeps plugging away.

But I can see where K^2 is coming from too.
