For everyone who's a long-time fan of traditional Square or Enix or Square Enix franchises, we take the idea of TOMB RAIDER to you. It's been a few years since we've acquired the title and the development around it, and with the upcoming TOMB RAIDER in March, we want your perspective on our growing titles.

Likewise we've prepared a Square Enix Members article to discuss the similarities and direction for the new TOMB RAIDER in the hopes that you'll give it a second look.

Let us know below what your impressions are on the upcoming release of TOMB RAIDER and what key moments your favorite franchise has brought you that you hope to see in our upcoming titles and newly acquired franchises.

Its been a while since I've played a tomb raider game and this one has me as excited as the first one, I really cant wait to play it it looks so amazing and the game plqy looks simply incredible. I just want to share that with everyone, and show hope that even the old tomb raider players might all come back if they had list interest at some point in the game

When I attempt to link my Square Enix and Xbox 360 accounts via Tomb Raider, the e-mail I receive redirects me to the European version of the member's site, despite the fact I live in North America. Browsing the North American member's site, I don't even see any options for linking your ID to a console, like there are on the European site. Is this a glitch? Is anyone else having this problem or is it just me?

I have the same problem as well. It's annoying because Tomb Raider takes even longer to load up than its already long load just to tell me that it's not linked.

SquareEnix has done it again, it would seem. After playing such gems like Star Ocean, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, I didn't think anything could top them, or even equal them.

I purchased Tomb Raider for my PC not expecting much. Perhaps just a few hours to kill a boring day. I didn't read much about the game, I didn't watch every trailer, I didn't wait with baited breath for the release, although I was interested. If I had known what I was in for, I may have been just like any other fanboy of this amazing series. Excited, giddy with anticipation, apprehensive about certain elements that were removed or added. But over all, looking forward to the release of the game.

The detail of the opening cut scene was amazing. AMAZING. It felt like I was watching a cinematic movie. Perhaps something like Final Fantasy: Advent Children, the animation and detail are THAT good. (Coming from a man who plays this game on 'Normal' settings, THAT says something.) Boredom instantly killed at the ensuring chaos with the ship, I settled back with my laptop and watched events unfold, my interest growing more.

Right away, my stance was, 'Poor Lara!' Throughout the entire game, she is constantly abused by both enemies and elements. Her welcome to the island is a blow to the head and stuffed in a large sack overlooking a pit. Of course, being Lara, she escapes and falls into said pit.. Right into a metal prong that, of course, impales her in the side. She isn't the hardened Lara you know from the original series, shrugging off injuries, fearless. And the death scenes? Amazing. Yes, there are the falls that we are all used to. But have you ever seen Lara crushed by a boulder without it filming her reaction? The panic in her face as her life leaves her? Or what about when her throat is skewered by a sharp spear-type contraption during a River Slide? Or when she's impaled by a tree-branch? She doesn't immediately die. You get to watch her panic, her fear, her struggling even when she knows she's doomed, and finally watch as her eyes close and you reload the game.

This is a 21-year-old girl, perhaps never having to face such dangers in her cloistered life at a University. You could see the pain in her face, hear it in the way she breathes, see it as she limps from one place to the next. She is clearly suffering, and she continues to until she reaches her first pitfall. The Lara we all know and love would scoff at such and cross it blindfolded. But our new Lara isn't skilled enough to do so. She's terrified. But she does it anyway. Perhaps she feels some sense of accomplishment.

During the events in this game, you can truly sympathize with Lara's character. You can see the pain and unease in her features, the discomfort as she shivers in a storm, trying to start a fire, you can hear the panic in her voice many times during the game, such as when she see's something that distresses her or when she has to fight her way to a helicopter, clutching her side, in dire need of first aid, her exhalation of 'No..' or the s-word makes you realise that this girl doesn't know if she's about to meet the maker. She isn't a hardened adventurer, she is forced to adapt to her surroundings. Not because she wants to. But because she has to. In order to save her friends, to save herself, to go home.

As the game progresses, as Lara becomes an accomplished killer, you can see some of her moxie coming to the surface. For example, in one scene after a particularly challenging fight against a mook with a metallic shield, you hear the other mooks opinion of this, and Lara's response.

Mook 1: 'Holy S**t! She's still alive!!
Lara (In a voice rich with confidence, maybe a touch of egocentric bravado) 'Yes! Still Alive!'

Before she proceeds to wipe the floor with said mook.

As the game progresses, she becomes more and more hardened, but she doesn't lose that fearful edge. When she nearly walks into enemy ambushes, she has to verbally tell herself to be silent by whispering, 'Shh'. When she's in a trap and has already killed one enemy, naturally, her breath will be rapid. As it starts to slow down, the bushes rattle. Then you hear her breathing speed up as she waits to see what will emerge.

All of these things, and so much more add to the realism that I've always needed from a Lara Croft game. I needed to see a solo woman who, although brave and courageous, also has a capacity for fear and panic as the times call for it.

This game was absolutely amazing, splendid, a sure-win for GOTY 2013. I only hope that the creators of this masterpiece read and take pride in the praise and rave reviews they receive and celebrate such a well-earned victory.

Thank you, SquareEnix, for making me realise that perhaps you can't top games like Star Ocean or Kingdom Hearts. But you can equal them in an age where Masterfully-made games are a rarity. Thank you or justifying the reasons I've been a devout and dedicated fan from the start.

I suspect it's one of those back end issues they'll just have to fix in due course. I honestly didn't notice the issue until I was registering my game and simultaneously read this topic in the user account area while realizing that all of the information I had entered in on the account I created for my Xbox was missing.

In any event, assuming Sq-Enix is tracking this issue add my name to the list of people affected. My game currently thinks it's registered/linked properly but to an EU account it appears. In the mean time I've setup this account and registered my game via the leaflet instructions included with my game.

In all honesty I'm more concerned about the Scavenger Hunt DLC that is not currently working.

Rope arrows doesn't ran out of. Its infinitive. Whenever you use alternative fire, there will be rope arrows, even if the arrow count is zero.

But if you are at Endurance wreck, are you sure your problem is not with Rope Ascender? After killing Tank, you can get Rope Ascender from him, and beside him, there's arrows lying.

Having same issue. By mistake I thought I was registering a new account on the Square-Enix NA site, but it turned out to be the EU site. So then I registered a new account on the NA site using the same credentials and email address.

I registered the Tomb Raider game code on the NA site. But when trying to link Tomb Raider on Xbox Live from within the game, it sends me an email from the EU site, and will link Xbox Live to the EU account.

How do I link Xbox Live to my Square Enix NA account? I would also prefer to delete/cancel the EU account since it has the same email as my NA, and there is no option to change the EU account email address or cancel the account.

I don't want to play the game until I get this account link issue corrected. How can I delete the EU account. How can I link the NA account to Xbox Live.

It is infinitive, unless a bug occured for you. Rope arrows doesn't concede any arrow, even though you are firing an arrow. For PC, shooting rope arrow's default button is 'middle mouse button' where 'left mouse button' for normal arrow shooting.

All I want to see in the future of the new Tomb Raider series is just a revisit to the mansion like the old games, open exploration in there with some obstacles and secrets.

I, just want to tell you how i am very upset right now because there is a game breaking glitch in tomb raider (2013) and i am at 66% of the game. When i arrived in SHIPWRECK BEACH the survivors camp location, i diden't go directly to the mission waypoint where they are trying to repaire the boat. Instead i went looking for objects everywhere before i start the next mission. I found a rock in the water that is possible to climb but i can't jump in the water. That's when i start looking for an object to help me climb. There is a small boat that is possible to pull with the rope arrow. so i put that boat near the rock and i climbed the rock. I explored everywhere and when i come back to the mission, nothing happen. I am stock there and theres is nothing i can do. We are a lot of people who likes to explore everything before the main mission and now because of this little boat, there is a lot of unhappy customers. GAME BREAKING GLITCH ...

Try Un-installing the game software from either the PS3, Xbox or PC. And install it once again. That may help.

Hi, i am playing on ps3. The spot i went using the small boat is the spot you are suppose to go when you lauch the mission and you obtain the new bow. With that new bow you will be able to shot through the rock and attach the rope and go on to the next mission. But be careful, you can climb on this rock by using the small boat and go on picking lots of objects and one secret tomb. But when you will come back to the mission, nothing will happen and you will be screwed like me. I already start over the game yesterday but i'm still pissed off ! you can see a video on youtube of what happen with the mission, here is the link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=upLfdE0qILs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upLfdE0qILs)

I recently bought the game, "Tomb Raider" PC Download. I entered all the correct information, and paid for it. I received neither a Product Code, or a Receipt for my purchase even though they have ALREADY taken it out of my account. I was wondering if anyone knew whether they just take a REALLY LONG TIME to do anything, or if there is a problem. I've sent emails to both support websites for enix, and no reply... not even an AUTO reply. The thing is, this site sent me an email to confirm my email, so I know I put the right information in. Just wondering if anyone knew wth was going on.

I am at 22%, Coastal Vista. I hang upside down, kill the three attackers, shoot myself down, but I don't receive the rope, thus I don't have rope arrows. I've gon back to the checkpoint, done this scene over and over, and there are only three attackers and no rope. Once, the game went into slow motion, couldn't hardly control Lara, getting shot at from above, but shots from nowhere with no people to kill. Can't move on without rope arrows.

One has to ask the question as to how one of the biggest releases of the year in both sales and critical acclaim becomes SquareEnix critical failure? Which seems to always be the case with all it's foreign proprieties outside Japan. While it may have not met it's lofty 5 million + sales figures. The fact it has done what it has in just under a month is nothing to sneeze at. Furthermore when you look at North American sales figures of some of the biggest releases of the past several years puts things into some perspective. Here are some previous AAA titles and their North American sales figures.

Sales as in Millions of Units sold:

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves 3.05 Million (2009)

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception 2.44 Million (2011)

Borderlands 2 1.42 Million (Xbox 360) (PS3) 0.66 Million (2012)

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (PS3) 1.76 Million (Xbox) 3.96 Million (2011)

Mass Effect 3 1.73 Million (2012)

Halo 4 5.48 Million (2012)

Final Fantasy US Sales Figures:

Final Fantasy X 2.91 Million (2001)

Final Fantasy VIII 2.28 Million (1999)

Final Fantasy XII 1.88 Million (2006)

Final Fantasy X-2 1.92 Million (2003)

Final Fantasy VII 3.01 Million (1997)

Final Fantasy XIII 1.13 Million (2010)

With that said Tomb Raider has already amassed 3.5 million in less then a month. Which is not even counting digital sales. Which one has to ask the question why aren't they counting those sales? Now think about that for a minute. It has already surpassed Uncharted 2&3, Mass Effect 3, Borderlands 2 X360, and every Final Fantasy ever released in North America. I am not saying this to compare other then to show they aren't taking those US sales figures into account. It will also likely pass Xbox Skyrim North American figures which doesn't even count PS3 sales. So what the heck is SquareEnix complaining about? You couldn't have asked for a better showing of which any developer would have been thrilled with these numbers. At least anyone outside of Japan at least.

What this seems to be is that Square was expecting to offset it's losses from Final Fantasy Online which was a bit unrealistic don't you think? I had high hopes for FF online just as much as anyone else. Yet no reason to drag everything else down with it. As a long time FF fan I still would like to believe it has a future. As it has yet to see it's full potential. Yet I don't see how Tomb Raider was anything but a huge success in retrospect. It has already in it's short history outsold all of it's previous releases and by far is the best in the series to date. It has received almost universal acclaim and is among this year candidates for Game Of The Year from what I've been hearing. So one has to ask the question as to what SquareEnix was thinking in these inflated sales numbers? Furthermore I'd say we wait a few more months before we start making any final assumptions.

I love Square but I have to admit that they are way off base on this. If selling 3.5 million units is considered a failure now. Then we are in serious trouble when next gen comes around which is just around the corner. Furthermore it is irresponsible to not include digital downloads when that is where a gowning majority of sales are going now. So why not give us more of Tomb Raiders amazing story campaign. I would love to see more of what makes Lara tick and I can bet fans wouldn't not mind spending on that either. That is instead of ruining it with the only sour note in it's multiplayer option. Tomb Raider deserves everything it has achieved here & SquareEnix should be a little less greedy and be grateful it has accomplished what it has considering expectations.

CyberPhoneix
3rd Apr 2013, 16:41
I wasn't trying to compare as I was mealy stating that when you looks at the numbers they don't add up. Furthermore I am speaking of US sales figures not Japan, Korea or anywhere else outside North America!!! If you can't make any constructive comments here then don't bother. Tomb Raider as another note is not an MMOS so I don't know where you are getting that comparison. You may want to deny it all you want but FF Online was a mammoth failure. Square likely set it projections high to try to offset it's losses there. Yet expecting it to sell like a COD was a bit unrealistic don't you think. Not to mention why aren't digital sales ever figured into the final projections? That's like Record Labels not counting i-tunes sales which account for 90% of all music figures.

Selling over 3.5 million copies in a month is a huge success however you look at it. Furthermore Crystal Dramatics is also at odds with SquareEnix conclusions as they don't agree with their outcome. Forbes and other major news and gaming sites also think SquareEnix numbers are inflated. Since this isn't the first time they have set projections unrealistically high for their foreign releases. Some have even gone as far as saying how Japan is out of touch with western markets. Be that what it may but is not the point I was getting at here. I was showing that when you look at other major AAA titles. Tomb Raider is certainly doing quit well considering it's release date. So how about you give me something other then a rant with nothing to back it up, just saying. :)

Which numbers do they think are inflated, exactly? If you're talking about the numbers in their expectations, I'd have to agree. It feels like Square Enix is expecting these games to sell outrageously based on on brand name and by virtue of being made by their western divisions. I feel like Tomb Raider was an unequivocal success, with truly impressive sales. It should also be mentioned that Yoichi Wada has been quoted as saying their sales expectations in the West ARE generally pretty aggressive; As he puts it, lifetime sales of a title tend to be reached within one or two months of release in Japan whereas titles released overseas continue selling in North America or Europe over a much longer period.

Also, where are you getting your numbers? Are these sales based only on the first three weeks of the North American release of the individual games? Because many of the Final Fantasies sold higher than the figures I see above, and they don't include digital sales or used sales either (which are important to factor in an economy like this). I agree digital sales really should be included, but I think this is more to do with Sony not keeping track of the number of purchases rather than Square Enix not collecting them. It would probably help if Sony included some kind of purchase counter on PSN games. Also, the sales of the games doesn't take into account DLC developed for said games. Both Sleeping Dogs and Final Fantasy XIII-2 had DLC to buy for example, and this does not to seem to be included in profit considerations anywhere.

I am a little confused, though, regarding the Hitman game. I've been hearing/reading that the game which did not sell to expectations was the Hitman HD Trilogy, but someone else on this forum said it was Hitman Absolution that fell below expectations. I tried to click the gameinformer artcle they linked, but the site appears to be down.

Thank You Leaferian for your insightful observation. The numbers I was referring to are just for North America as you are correct they did sell more when you figure in international sales. That of coarse isn't counting the special additions add-ons and such. I didn't include the add-ons as those were to little to make much if any different in the final sales figures. Furthermore many of those were never released in the US. As far as based only on the first three weeks of the North American release of the individual games as you stated. I am not exactly sure but my guess likely not. These seemed to be full stats from release to current but I could be wrong. At least from what I could understand from my sources. As far as where I am getting some of my information from is VGChartzPro. Basically it is a business intelligence and research firm and publisher of the VGChartz Network of gaming websites.

As an industry research firm, VGChartz publishes over 7,000 unique estimates per week relating to worldwide game hardware and software sales and hosts an ever-expanding game database with over 40,000 titles listed and 1.5 million unique data points. The VGChartz Network is made up of the VGChartz, gamrFeed, gamrReview, gamrTV and gamrConnect brands and provide consumers with a range of content from news and features to reviews to social networking and community features. A number of publishers, news websites, academic institutions and analysts have used VGChartz data for their business research data. Probably more information then you needed but it is likely where game informer got there reference information from as well. Well at least in part that is. Regardless it is quite informative if you are looking for hard game statistics and such. Well at least as much as one can expect from. As complete numbers would be difficult to come by I would think.

The only drawback is it isn't exactly weekly as the late update was March 23, 2013 but it's close enough for most purposes. I found this to be the case in Tomb Raiders totals which are a bit off but should have a more accurate account in a couple months or so hopefully. It's the best source I have been able to find thus far as there doesn't seem to be many public companies that track game statistics. Since getting hard numbers is probably going to be difficult as the site doesn't include digital sales unfortunately. This really needs to change at some point. As far as Hitman Absolution goes I believe you are correct with your assumption. Both Hitman and Deus EX were also well received but fell below SquareEnix projections as well. In fact I have yet to see any SquareEnix AAA foreign release of late which did met their expectations.

This says a lot about SquarEnix past president and hopefully the nearly appointed Yosuke Matsuda will help turn that around. According to Yosuke's own admission, "what does make money, according to financial disclosures over the last few years, are domestic-only titles on smartphones and web, something most western fans have little access to or interest in." He went on to say that "Square Enix doesn’t expect to make money on console games for at least two years, partially due to the generation shift and its heavy investment in next-gen tech such as the Luminous engine." I don't think they have that kind of time to just sit back and expect to ride it out. Yet I think you hit it on the head as far as sales expectations in the West are generally pretty aggressive. Yet that is part of the problem I think. In closing here are some other observations I had.

If Tomb Raider cost around $100 million to make and has been declared by Square Enix to have failed to meet targets despite selling 3.5 million units in a month, surely there’s no way that BioShock Infinite will make its money back considering it cost twice as much and is unlikely to match Tomb Raiders sales, never mind double them? In fact, just scanning the financial results of games companies shows that outside of the three console manufacturers, the only major publishers to post consistent profits are Activision, Valve and Capcom. All three of which have laid off staff in the past year (although the Valve layoffs were not due to game sales or downsizing from what I am aware of). You have to wonder what the end point of all this will be though. This past generation has seen dozens of developers go to the wall and it seems that the remaining publishers are gambling on being the last two or three standing when everyone else goes bust.

Of course that will be the point where anti-consumer practices that the likes of EA are trying to force upon us will become the norm because there’ll be no other big publishers left to buck the trend. After just under four weeks on sale, Crystal Dynamic’s reboot now stands at almost half the LTD sales of the original 1996 Tomb Raider, and has outsold LTD sales for every game released in the franchise since Chronicles back in 2000. It is clear that this year’s Tomb Raider is a major hit for the series, and will likely go on to become its highest-selling title. The fact that the game missed Square Enix’s sales target says far more about the publisher’s unrealistic forecasts/expectations, than it does about the quality of Crystal Dynamics as a developer or the competence of the North American sales team (who was thrown under the bus basically.

Given this new information about first week Tomb Raider sales, it certainly appears as if Crystal Dynamics is being unfairly blamed by the outgoing CEO Yoichi Wada as one of the causes of Square Enix’s weak financial performance. Yet having some expereince with Japanese companies. It's not unusual for them to pass the blame onto everyone else but themselves. Yet saving face has a lot more to do with it but I won't get into that here. Not to mention is besides the point. Perhaps SquareEnix next CEO will set the record straight after Wada leaves this June. Frankly the sooner the better as far as I am concerned. Sorry more of a responce then what you probably wanted but does give something else to think about. :)

In Tomb Raider, there is a game-breaking bug in which it will render the game unplayable. During the "Going Back In" mission where you are to save Sam from Mathias, in the Chasm Stronghold, there is a tower filled with 4 enemies and explosives. You blow it up, and you will come to a gate in which you are to pull it with your rope arrows, but is blocked by invincible wooden barriers. In normal playthroughs though, after you kill all the enemies in the tower, you proceed forward, a second wave of enemies appears, in which after you defeat them, a gust of wind blows away the wooden barriers, then you pull it, and proceed. But when the glitch is hit, you walk up, nothing happens. No enemies. Bridge is out from where you came from, so you're pretty much stuck there. I can't go back to previous saves because the game autosaves. The only saves I have are before the explosive tower. If a patch is coming, it would be good to have it on as soon as possible, it's almost impossible to go any further at this point and I'm at an 87% completion. (This is also my first time through). (The platform I'm playing is on PS3)

I would just suggest that core Final Fantasy followers may be a little frustrated that there is not a numbered title that has been released latetly.

Leaferian-379423

These sales cannot be current, or you have only found the sales for a single system for a multiplatform game. The current North American sales numbers for Final Fantasy XIII for example are 1.57 million PS3 and 1.13 million 360 respectively, for a combined total of 2.7 million for all of North America. These numbers have been the same since around January of this year, although obviously they only update when sales reach a new ten or hundred thousand. Tomb Raider is still selling well, but I think it's important to have all of your numbers accurate to paint the clearest picture.

I'll think about responding to some of the other things you said, but specifically in regards to your quote from Matsuda I think it's important not to misunderstand them. I don't believe they are going to phone it in on consoles or just sit back and let iOS games be their focus, just that they've invested so significantly in the technology and systems for both Luminous Studio and their own PS4 developments that the money they've spent over the years on them won't be easily won back just by pumping out a Tomb Raider or a Final Fantasy. You should also keep in mind that the 'slow slales' of their console games is not the reason they are taking a heavy financial hit; The $105 million they are reporting as a loss is the cost of fully restructuring their company from marketing models to managers, and lower-than-expectations sales of their Western console games simply haven't done much to offset the costs.

Xbox 360, logged in this morning and found that my mp data was wiped, went from lvl 36 to zero with the stats even erased. Im not starting from scratch again just to get the damn achievement. I want my data restored somehow. This mp game is awful and never should have been made. Sp is fantastic, makes me sad they didnt make sp even better just so they could make a mo for a game that doesnt need it.

Fair enough! Again I was only quoting sales figures from what I have been able to find. Yet as you pointed out getting an exact number without taking digital into account is probably not as accurate as it could be. You are also correct as some of what I mentioned where just for one system. I tried to include some which showed for both systems but to be fair I had trouble finding exact FF sales I could verify. SquareEnix is not always forthcoming in their exact figures, so we both probably may be on the low end. Another thing to keep in mind is that VGVChartz only figures sales for

USA
UK
Germany
France
Japan

Collectively, VGChartz estimates that total retail game sales in these 5 countries account for around 70% of the Global market. The raw data collected in these five regions are used to produce two extrapolated charts:

Europe - UK + Germany + France extrapolated to represent the European Totals
Global - USA + Europe + Japan extrapolated to represent the Global Totals

This year VGChartz has plans to produce further direct charts for Canada, Spain, Italy, Latin America, Australia and Asia - each new chart will provide more regional insight along with greater Global accuracy. Furthermore I was only able to access thier public records as their Pro version I didn't have access to. Any custom analysis, preview data, forecasts you need to contact them directly. So for information sake this was the best I was able to do. Just so I can provide a bit more accurate account of global sales. I hope this will be more acceptable in your view. All together there are about 151 titles (Square Enix-SquareSoft) among other publishers have released across all Final Fantasy platforms & systems but I didn't include the full list here. It was a pain just compiling this one. Not to mention most of the rest were never released in the U.S. Anyways this might be interesting for some to poll through nevertheless.

Sales as in million of units:

Luminous Studio and their own PS4 developments that the money they've spent over the years on them won't be easily won back just by pumping out a Tomb Raider or a Final Fantasy. You are quite correct with that assessment and is why Wada departure might be be seen as a positive among stockholders. On the negative side though the news of CEO of SquareEnix America Mike Fischer is rumored to be let go sometime in May. The head of marketing is also expected to be let go right after E3. Layoffs are also expected at Square Enix's Japanese and European divisions. So that can't be good news.

Yet that as you have already pointed out may have been part of their restructuring plan but the timing of this is a bit suspicious. On a more positive front what Square is attempting to do with the Luminous engine is a smart move considering how successful the "Unreal" engine has been to Epic Games bottom line. If Square could have similar success there it could help offset some of those losses but we will just have to wait and see. When all is said and done I don't think it is unrealistic to see Tomb Raider make close to those figures though. Japan sees it's sales top out after a couple months as where in the west it tends to be a bit more drawn out. So it still is a bit to early to say one way or the other.

To end this debate and address the rest of your questions. I'll leave you with some closing thoughts. One interesting observation I came across. Japan only had 3 console titles which even made the top Japanese yearly sales charts for 2012. The top 4 were either DS or 3DS titles. Coming in at number 5 was One Piece Pirate Musou (PS3) followed by Resident Evil 6 (PS3) and rounding out the list at 10 was Mario Party 9 for the Wii. The closest western title Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 came in at 81 for 2012 lol. So one has to ask the question as to who and what exactly are they basing these under performing sales numbers on? Tomb Raider has already surpassed Resident Evil 6 and the others are hardly worth mentioning.

Titles like Monster Hunter of coarse are a huge money makers in Japan. Yet I would hardly call that a fair comparison as mobile sales in the west are barely worth even mentioning. First of all, the games that make money in Japan are not necessarily the games that make money in the West. Japanese gamers have gone to portable consoles in droves and they buy traditional Japanese RPGs for portable systems. Thank you for bringing that up earlier which is right on the money. Whenever the Vita sees a sales bump in Japan, its because a new JRPG has come out. The same is true of the 3DS. The problem is huge hits in Japan are cult hits at best, over here, well usually. The hardcore Western gamer tends towards FPS games played on consoles, not RPGs played on portables.

They just don’t have the marketing support to become huge hits here. Stop and consider, for example, that half of Halo 3′s budget of $60 million was marketing. Western developers treat marketing their games like their movie studios: Medal of Honor: Warfighter hired Linkin Park to write them a song. Black Ops II launched an ad starring Robert Downey Jr. and directed by Guy Ritchie. Halo 4 has more marketing tie-ins than most movies that came out last summer. Your average Japanese game company just cannot compete with that. With maybe the exception of SqureEnix of coarse. Yet I hardly saw any real marketing push for any of their western AAA titles outside Japan. Yet that could be a reason nearly half of SquareEnix North American marketing staff got fired but who knows I guess.

Tomb Raider success thankfully was largely due to word of mouth and great reviews among major gaming, news networks & publications which typically don't cover gaming as a general rule. In addition to the usual suspects IGN, MediaCritic, GameInformer etc. In retrospect Japanese attempts to mimic western titles rarely meet with success, and when a developer like Square produces a worldwide hit, it's usually because they deliver an experience not found elsewhere. The problem facing fans outside of the country is that the tastes of Japanese gamers are diverging from the rest of the world, thus limiting the commercial appeal of even the biggest titles in Japan. Furthermore the changing habits of Japanese adult gamers have left the console space in the country to move toward mobile gaming which is huge in Japan. My guess they are basing sales figures accords to these Japanese mobile sales figures?

Which in almost every case outside Final Fantasy will outsell almost everything else. Not to mention what is considered normal in western markets is not necessarily the case in Japan. The gamers in a since have changed more than the games have. Which might explain why there seems to be such a disconnect between eastern publishers and their western counterparts. What would be considered as under performing in Japan as in the case of Tomb Raider, Hitman, Deus EX. Is seen quite differently by western standards in retrospect. Japan's model is that they work on something until it's perfect & then go and work on the next thing - and it tends to be very sequential. So then at any point in time very early they have something that's perfect.

Western development takes a more incremental approach across the entire game, so something isn't absolutely perfect until very late by Japanese standards. According to a friend of mine who works for a large game developer. He had said that unlike Japan we share so much development information, tools and everything else. When going to game developer conferences it is a good way to share common procedures and tools to make the highest quality graphics. The Japanese don't do that & are very protective of their development systems. They don't share, and they don't understand English enough to go to these conferences and grasp what's out there. What is also interesting is that the top 5 selling games in Japan right now are all either 3DS or PSP titles.

So in closing do you think SquareEnix is basing Tomb Raiders sales on it's mobile divisions which tends to be quite lucrative? I don't know but it just seems that when 3.5 + million sales in a month is considered a failure. It has to be based on something other then console sales which clearly isn't what SquareEnix is basing it figures on. As I had already mentioned earlier the top 3 console titles in Japan last year have already been passed by Tomb Raider this year. Well at least when you look at it from a western marketing standpoint it appears that way I guess. Well that about wraps it up for me on this debate. Time to move on to other things. Now with the new Tomb Raider movie apparently given the green light. It will be interesting to see if they can fix that disaster like they have with this amazing reboot. :)

I have much, MUcH more to rant about given my background in Organizational Quality and other such business topics, but I just want to chime in and agree completely with the opening post.

Most infuriating to me however, is the use of Metacritic as a reliable metric for ANYTHING. For starters, only a very limited pool of people actually know about the site, even less visit it, and an even smaller number comment on it or use it for any meaningful reference for their game purchases; You are NOT getting a particularly robust slice of any target gaming demographic relying on such a faulty system. I understand that video games straddle the line between product and art, so that makes it dificult to find meaningful measurements of success for an expensive form of entertainment, but Metacritic!? I'm not the kind of person to wish ill on anyone, but whomever made that decision(and indeed the people making/clearing that decision throughout the industry as a whole) need to be held accountable.

I have been a fan of Squaresoft's software for decades at this point, and I would hate to see them fail to learn anything meaningful from their current restructuring, because I really feel that the industry and gamers by natural extension need them around.

I couldn't agree with you more. I only mentioned metacritic as a passing thought but by no means am I a supporter of it. Metacritic is one of the best example of what moral philosophers call the heterogenesis of intents. Some unnamed guys starts a cross-reference site with the hope to help customers, reviewers, developers and publishers, giving them a place to share resources. For first, let me back up my rant with some facts. Metacritic score is taken very seriously by the industry. There are publishers that are using the score as a clause to establish if a developer deserve a bonus or not for its work. For example, it is known that Obsidian had not received the bonus for Fallout New Vegas only because the game reached a metacritic score of 84 instead of 85.

For one meager metapoint, Bethesda refused to pay the bonus when FNV didnt reach the score of 85 lol. There are many reasons why the metacritic score is just a joke. For first, each reviewer in every site or magazine uses a different scoring system with different priorities and approaches (and most of the times, each reviewer interprets the same system in a personal way), then the whole idea of the media does not make a lot of sense. Second: not every magazine, site or journalist has the same ethical and professional standards. Third: reviews are just personal opinions and should be considered more a work of fiction in itself than a paper with scientific value. Fourth: the few features of a game that can be judged on an objective level are the least relevant. Last but not least, most game journalist are just over glorified gamers that do not know anything about the reality of game development.

I guess that most game journalists must be very afraid when they have to score a game. Especially when a AAA title finish is in their hands. Those kind of games involve big teams, big budgets and big audiences and even a mediocre review can ruin the career of many workers in the industry. As a result, we are arrived to a point where in a spectrum that ranges from 0 to 100, most AAA games will fall in the 80+ category. The difference between a mediocre game and a very good one is just a matter of few points. Every value below 80 is not even considered seriously, especially at release. Bad reviews can kill the marketing campaign, especially when the advertisement are published in the same places that should review those hyped games in the first place.

That alone destroys the whole point of Metacritic!! What's the usefulness if journalists have to pump their reviews just to reach an expected value and (if their career could be at risk whenever they speak their mind freely and go against the grain)? I know that I'm ranting but I cannot suffer a system that rewards cowardice, safety and lack of critical thinking when gaming is first and foremost about boldness and creativity. So, please everyone, stop giving credit to the metacritic score. Take it with a grain of salt as games are suffering because of that worthless system which needs to go.

With that said here is another point I wanted to cover but figured I would cover it in another post. In its financial report to shareholders a few days ago. SquareEnix cited an “ineffective” North American sales team as one key reason for the “extraordinary loss” the company has suffered over the last financial year. You see this is the problem with the current SquareEnix team and why it was probably best it's going thought a restricting now. When you take into consideration now that many AAA titles could cost upwards of 100 million or more to make. That was considered just under a decade ago to be a be what a major Hollywood film would run. One has to ask the question what are they thinking lol. When you consider that Tomb Raider cost 40 million more to make then Halo 4 which went on to set over 5 million units. If these costs keep rising then publishers won't ever make their money back. When ones has to sell several million units just to break even. So that blame falls on SquareEnix.

One also has to ask if AAA titles are not worth the effort vs the cost they are to produce? Then why does Square get so upset when sales figures don't meet their inflated expections? The problem I see was that SquareEnix was trying to have a major hit on the likes of Call Of Duty which was was never going to happen. Selling almost 5 to 6 million copies for a a reboot of franchise which was barely staying afloat was a bit to much to ask. The fact it has sold what it has is a testament to how great a game it is. Not to mention overcoming almost insurmountable expectations was nothing short of a miracle. So when SquareEnix came out to call it a failure has made them the laughing stock of the entire gaming industry. When AAA titles costing twice as much have made less you have to ask what really were they shooting for with this?

I think part of the problem is that to much focus is being put into multiplayer and less into the single player experience. I will choose a good single player over multiplayer any day of the week. While Tomb Raider had it's missteps with a less then acceptable multiplayer. It more then made up for it with it's brilliant single player campaign which is among the best the genre has ever produced. Which makes me wonder then why they continue to focus on DLC's which do nothing to add to that great single player experience. I would hate to see them fail to learn anything meaningful from their current restructuring, because I really feel that the industry and gamers by natural extension need them around. Boy do you have that right Malakhim3.

I very much agree with what you have said there in your closing statement!!! There is no question in my mind that SquareEnix has what it takes to continue it's storied legacy as one of Japan's premier gaming publishers. After all we likely may have not seen the success of platforms like the Playstation had it not been for the success of Final Fantasy. Now with the PS4 looking very good to retake the top of the console race. Especially now with XBox720 very negative press it's been getting as of late. There is no reason to believe that SquareEnix can't emerge from this with a new found direction and purpose as Sony has. If Tomb Raider can return from the dead and achieve what it has. Then Final Fantasay has that potential as well.

I wasn't aware we were having a debate. I mostly agreed with what you were saying, and simply wanted to point out that some of your figures were off. Having the most accurate figures you can helps people to take you seriously. I made a post just recently regarding some of these things. I read the financial briefing myelf, which was released back when the announcement came that Yoichi Wada would be stepping down, and they specifically stated that the lack of sales in North America was due entirely to their own outdated marketing models and failing to take into account certain costs and processes. They admit that their sales capability in North America is much weaker than they realized, which was one of the major reasons Wada decided to step down and pass the reigns to someone else. The incoming CEO, Matsuda, is expected to bring a fresh perspective. There was also some stuff specifically about Eidos, and how they were given the stage for the 2012-2013 financial year because Square Enix had confidence in them from Eidos contributions to the company leading up till then. Their confidence in Eidos isn't shaken, as it was mentioned above the company takes the blame for their poor internal models rather than claiming the developer to be incompetent.

I'm concerned as to where exactly they'll go from here, but I don't see any reason to believe they won't learn. I'd also like to say that Final Fantasy is not dead, nor is it anywhere near dead. The situation with the Final Fantasy series isn't the same as with the Tomb Raider series. Lastly, I'd like to address your distaste for gaming journalists. While I am technically new to gaming journalism I have spent much of my adult life paying careful attention to sales trends, tracking the changes and differences between games in the genres I enjoy, and making it my business to stay as informed as possible on gaming news. I love the Final Fantasy series and Square Enix, even though I can see the faults in each. I've personally taken some cursory classes in Gaming Design, as well as extensively experimenting with game-making programs such as RPGMaker. If it takes me over a year create a simple game with a program that essentially lets you jigsaw games together, I can only imagine how skilled someone must be that can take 5 years to create full games including engines, ridiculous graphics, 20+ hours of story, puzzles, and minigames completely from scratch. I would like to think that I'm not completely clueless. I know you were only saying most, I just wanted to say.

You bring up an interesting point, though, that I think encompasses the majority of fans as well as gaming journalists. Gamers rarely seem to understand how much work goes into a game, or what kind of limitations exist within a given system or engine. "I worked hard" doesn't make up for every mistake in a given game's development, of course, but still. I've also noticed that people seem to take game reviews way too seriously, and as you said they should be considered as personal opinions. While in some cases they contain fact, reviews are largely colored by the personal opinion of the person writing them. As far as I'm concerned they are essentially litmus tests; Good for a quick comparison between the game's features and your interests, but inherently faulty when it comes to in-depth analysis.

A new Tomb Raider patch is available for PS3 which I discovered today, I'm assuming it will be available for Xbox Live soon. I created this thread not to report a bug, but to let people know there is a patch available for PS3.

They released a patch titled Version 1.03, it is 99 MB, and it does the following I know:

-Fixes the Chasm Stronghold Gate Bug in "Going Back In"

For those of you stuck on particular levels, I'm not so sure this patch will fix the one you're stuck in, but it will fix the Gate Bug in the Chasm Stronghold that most people are getting on the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions.

That's all I know that this patch does. If there is more information that it there is more that it fixes, I will edit the thread to include what else it does.

Feel free to leave a comment if you know what else it patches.

I don't think so, Tomb Raider is a distraction from Square's core offering: Final Fantasy.

Didn't buy but rented and was disappointed.

Can someone help me though with a problem? I'm still playing on the PS2 even though I have a PS3. Game is FFXII. Can't find anything that matches the quality of this game.

XIII was good but I can't keep playing this one.

Hitman just didn't appeal.

These are handled by completely different studios, aren't they? I don't see how one franchise can be a 'distraction' from another.

In general, I'm surprised when I hear all these stories about "the state of the industry." I've never known a time when console gaming is so widespread. As such, I'm inclined to think that if the industry having problems, it's problems they're creating for themselves. Just my ignorant opinion, of course, I'm simply looking at it from the cosumer's point of view.

Well, your opinion is a lot more sensible than most of these other consumers if we're being quite honest. Square Enix has a bad habit of unreasonable expectations when it comes to sales, because many of their forecasts are made by the Japanese branch. This branch has a fundamental misundersanding of how the non-Japan market works, a mistake they are looking to correct more recently. It's not just Square Enix, either. Capcom has also had some problems with overshooting realistic sales goals by quite a lot.

And yes, Tomb Raider is being handled by the Square Enix Europe team which was formerly Eidos. It's very unlikely tha these projects would distract from Final Fantasy, and in fact seem a welcome addition to their roster. The Japanese teams are focusing on Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Dragon Quest while the Europe team has been left in charge of the IPs they owned prior to becoming part of Square Enix. All that's really changed is that the Square Enix label has been stamped on the cover, and the sales/reception of these games will now affect the image of Square Enix as a whole. Fans seem to be unable to understand the disconnect between a development team and a whole company.

I was stuck for a while too... I figured out that if u hold your bow in aim for a while... your rope will shoot out so all you have to do is aim at the designated location and hold. Hope this helped :)

I am late to the game, I just got the new Tomb Raider and it is a very legit game. I probably won't play the multiplayer but I may check it out after my first play through. I actually just got done with "The Last of Us" and Tomb Raider is much more indepth and I am only an hour in. I am very excited that this Tomb Raider and Crystal Dynamics is taking the 3rd person format to the next level... Thanks for a great game!

Hi all.

I notice after completing the Tomb Raider story that my stats are no longer being updated on the website ( stats.tombraider.com ). My stats were syncing fine up to the point when I decided to play through the game again. I overwrote my save game in slot 1, now I've played for about 20min and killed a couple animals and now I notice that none of my stats are being updated. Should I be concerned? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Help. I just tried to play tomb raider and I can't find any saved progress. It says there is a "title patch update" however, I do not know what that means or what to do or even if that will fix the issue. I was hoping that someone may have a fix for this or can tell if it's happened to anyone else. Awaiting a reply...

Hello all. I recenlty bought XBOX 360 controller for PC and everything worked okay, and still does except for Tomb Raider. Somehow, on steam, game doesn't register my downleft movement on right stick of controller. It doesn't move at all, but it works fine with any other Third Person game I tried.

Is there solution for this or?

I bought a special edition versions of tombraider for a friends birthday which highlighted you get music tracks from the game, but buying the few remaining tracks individually to make up the full set costs more than outright purchasing all of them as a package. Is this just another publishers way of ripping off fans?

I also found it a bit odd that you buy the game and own a copy of the music in full only to find out you can't get hold of the tracks or that you are expected to pay for them. I was hoping the publishers had been nice and provided a link in the special edition packs as a complete download but alas I figure not selling those 6 million copies is making the publishers department search for new lows.

I just bought Tomb Raider on sale during this past Black Friday (3 days ago) and played it pretty consistently, to the point where I finished the single player earlier today. I also achieved MOST of the single-player trophies as well in that one play-through. I haven't touched the multiplayer, nor do I intend to. Nothing against the game, but I am generally not a fan of TPS competitive multiplayer.

Anyways, I just wanted to give my 2 cents on this title and hopefully provide some info for the developers if they are indeed working on the rumoured sequel to this game. 1st I like this game alot, but it obviously borrows many gameplay elements from the Uncharted series (which originally took many elements from the original Tomb Raider series). The snowy Asian temple and environments being destroyed as you climb or traverse them though felt almost exactly like I was playing sections of Uncharted 2. It's not a flaw per se, but there were times when I was sitting there and questioning whether or not the creators were actively TRYING to copy those moments.

How it differed from Uncharted was that Lara felt a bit more sluggish and bulk, like she was not as nimble as Drake. This was not necessarily a bad thing, but needs to be improved for certain areas of the game. For example melee combat does not feel "right". I can't quite put my finger on it, but I lack any enthusiasm when engaging an enemy mono-a-mono. The impact and action of the fist-to-cuffs just doesn't excite me as much as the gunplay does.

It is often too easy to be overwhelmed by enemies when they attack you hand-to-hand with multiple people. Automatically you want to revert back to using guns. Having a wider scope for the camera COULD help this, but I think a better solution would be to implement a counter system similar to what was done in Batman: Arkham City when you are attacked by two enemies simultaneously.

Sorry if my post has come off as negative so far, but I did really enjoy the game and am just trying to give some constructive criticism. One of the areas where I felt Tomb Raider excelled was in exploration and progression. Getting new weapons and upgrades helped expand your experience in the areas you would traverse. An otherwise inaccessible hallway, blocked by debris could originally be off-limits in your first venture through an area, but upon acquiring the shotgun the area suddenly becomes open to further exploration. It felt very much like the Legend of Zelda in this manner, where the items you acquire expand your experience.

One more thing that is just a personal qualm is about Lara herself. I enjoy how the game makes her seem vulnerable and shows her taking her lumps, but it's a little TOO much. It felt like every time she was in a cutscene she had to get seriously hurt. Like for example when she is originally caught by the Oni and tied up in the room with all the dead bodies she breaks free and falls on the ONE SPOT NOT covered with corpses. And she lands HARD on the stone too, there's just no breaks for this girl, she literally has no luck this whole game. She's knocked out multiple times, stabbed with rebar, beaten by a group of men, knocked off or fallen through bridges and ledges, the list goes on and on. It's not the sometimes gory death scenes she has that bothers me, but the fact the developers seem to WANT to show Lara getting hurt, ALOT! I mean even in the parts of the game where you gets swept downstream the game PULLS you towards the dangerous debris in the water, TRYING to hurt you. I understand it's supposed to be a challenge, but why would the water suddenly drag me across the screen to the other side of the river just to hurt me? Not only does it defy fluid dynamics, but it just seems cruel.

Anyways I'm sure there more I could put down here, but it is late and I think that's more than enough reading for the average person.

Hi,

My tomb raider game reset itself for some reason. When I started the game it proceeded to go through the registration process and brightness level again. This wasn't a problem for me, but I also realized it reset my multiplayer progression. Is there any way to fix this? For proof, it still holds my original level in the leaderboards (says I'm level 29, rank 25083 as of now, Look for 'sRz xCyberx'), but when you select profile it reads that I'm a level 1. I fear even touching multiplayer believing that it will overwrite anything in the leaderboards.

Is there someway Square Enix can override at least my level, aside from all of the other stats I lost?

I will call by Wednesday if I don't get a response by then. Thank you for your time.

Hi guys, I got a crash in the game TOMB RAIDER, in the part when Lara tries to save Grim, just after his death. The game shows the cutscene, then when the camera moves back behind Lara, the game crashes.

1-I play the battle against the enemies, just after Grim says it's a trap.
2-The game shows the cutscene (Grim falls).
3-The camera moves back behind Lara.
4-The game crashes.

I tried 3 times, with same result.
Always crashes.

Just to check if I was doing something wrong, I looked at a few online gaming videos demonstrating what you're supposed to do in the Geothermal Caverns level of Tomb Raider (2013). In the videos and text walkthroughs they all say to shoot a fire arrow at a gas plume behind the altar in the Geothermal Caverns to blow up the cultists, but there aren't any gas plumes to shoot at in there. Is this a glitch, or did I somehow forget something?

Hi I just got Tomb raider for Ps4 today and have a rather annoying issue, the problem is when audio comes out of the speaker on the controller for logs etc it also comes out of my surround systems rear speakers as well which makes for an annoying duel audio echo, does anyone else have this issue ? and a way to have it just through the controller speaker which i assume is how it's meant to be ?

Killzone shadow fall has logs that go through the controller speaker only which works really well, i'm guessing Tomb raider has a bug that needs patching ?

I also don't get audio from the controller speaker when using the hand held radio it just comes out of the centre speaker on my surround system wasn't it supposed to be the Controller speaker for that i'm sure i read it was ?

seems the game is buggy and needs patching

I just got the game tonight and I wanted to connect to SE thru the menu in the game but it says I dont have access to online features because of my privacy & online safety settings. But I dont have anything set that would prevent this.
I assume they mean on my xbox 1 because I dont know of any such features on my SE account.

I am having trouble with my account a different issue. Last year it gave me an account to SE in the UK and not in the US I thought the issue had been fixed but I have a feeling that Im still connected to both SE. I tried changing my email to a more current version and it said I did it even verified it with the email but it still shows my old email so I think that it changed it on the UK version of this account and not the US version.

So not sure what I should do I have sent an email to SE but well its the weekend and I dont believe anyone is around to help until at least Monday.

By not having access to the online features is all Im missing out on is the multiplayer stuff? Anyone know? Anyone have any ideas of what I can do Im almost at the point of just trying to delete both versions of this account and start anew I dont think Ive got any points or whatever the only thing Id lose I suppose is the registration of Tomb Raider Definitive Edition which I already did and used the code for
Anyway if anyone has any helpful suggestions or whatever Id appreciate it
Thanks

A couple of days ago (1/30/01) we got my son "Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition" for the XBox One for his birthday. He's played for a couple of days with no problems and everything was fine until a little before noon today (2/1/14). At that time he started the game and got as far as the "loading" screen. It stayed there for a few moments then the screen went completely black and never came back no matter how long he waited. Other games play just fine. Does he have a defective game or is something else going on (server issues, etc.). He can start a new game without any apparent problems.

Thanks,
Ray

A love so much this game... well, I really love all the Tomb Raider games and I recognize the great job that Square Enix has made with this awesome game of Lara Croft! But I have a problem... I recently purchased a copy of Tomb Raider and it is the game of the year edition. It was all good until I open the game box and realized that there was no manual, just two folded plastic papers of the warranty, one in english and the other in spanish, but that was not the big deal. The game box says that includes downloadable content. Inside my game box I found the promotional code (redemption code) for that downloadable content, but here's the problem... the code is a 25 digits combination of letters and numbers in this format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. So how do I can get my downloadable content? And other thing is that my game didn't come with the code to register the game to my profile in my account of Square Enix... please I want to know what I can do... :(

I am having the same issue. I'm at 28% near the cliffside village right after a plane crashes near me, then the pilot is killed. From there I defeat a riot shield wielding enemy only to have the game freeze and boot me to the home screen. This has happened over and over even after putting my Xbox one through 2 power cycles. I emailed support 2 days ago, so far no response. It's really shameful that game manufacturers like square enix put their games on the market before they have been tested and proven. Personally, I'm frustrated with the lack of support from the manufacturer and am requesting a refund.

There is no Square Enix Members leaflet or code for the definitive edition of Tomb Raider. No worries though, the code is only used for your private gameshelf and doesn't actually give you any bonuses!

I have the subtitles turned on for this game, and I frequently see lines appear in them when there is no audio for them - generally these are Lara's reactions to her environment, such as "it's freezing in here".

Also, the cut-scenes don't play at all on the first attempt. The game appears to freeze, and when I press any buttons I see either the loading indicator, or the indicator telling me which button to press to skip the cut-scene, which then lets me skip it and move on. This happens on every single cut-scene I get to, so it is very frustrating because it means I miss out a lot of the plot of the game, as well as missing some great visual scenes. If I pause the game when it appears to be frozen, then quit to the start menu and re-load the save, the cut-scenes then seem to work without any problem, but of course this is a hassle to do as it disrupts the flow of the game and means I have to repeat sections.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok people so if you continue your Tomb Raider game on xbox one you get loading screen followed by sound but black screen, DO NOT DELETE your save game here is a fix which works, but will require you to sign your profile into another Xbox one and internet must always be connected on both xbox consoles to communicate with cloud.
Save game data seems to be stored on the hardrive and cloud but gets corrupt on hardrive, unfortunelty you cannot delete data off your hardrive you can delete the game but save games do not get deleted.

here are the steps you take:-

Install Tomb Raider on another Xbox One,
Sign in your profile on xbox before starting game,
when the game starts allow it to complete syncing data,
continue your game noting % (eg. 60%) played and you will notice it will work,
play for about 20mins and make sure you advance to another checkpoint in game,
BE WARNED YOU ONLY GET ONE SHOT AT THIS PER XBOX MAKE SURE YOU ADVANCE IN THE GAME OTHERWISE YOU WILL GET BLACK SCREEN ON BOTH XBOXS
make sure game autosaves,
exit game,
go back to continue game and your % played must be higher than when you started (eg. 61%)
now you will be able to play again on your own xbox (Internet must be connected)
the other way im sure would work but not untested is to factory reset xbox this will mean your save data will be downloaded from cloud.
i was lucky to figure this out and was only made possible as my son has an xbox one.
this works perfectly and if you dont have use of another xbox, maybe another user with tomb raider can help i will help any person

any problem mail me astrawrb@hotmail.com or request my friendship kil13rChap81 on xbox live

Now I'm faffing around on the interweb trying to find a solution to a problem I've only previously experienced with PC gaming. Not good enough SqureEnix for teh piss poor testing and Microsoft for not having appropriate file management tools for saved games. Going through the factory reset process as I type......... I have been trying to grind my way to level 60 on Multiplayer for TR: DE on my Xbox One, which I purchased digitally through the marketplace. Now I've been experiencing they same broken game everyone else in this forum and xbox forums are complaining about where the game will be stuck on a black screen between multiplayer rounds or returns to lobbies. This is usually only alleviated by going to the dashboard and manually quiting the game so you can restart it and go back to multiplayer and try again. I've had to do this almost every other game, and now i'm guessing its why my level has been reset to 1 from what was 39! This is enraging! I love this game but I want to be done with multiplayer as soon as I have the achievements! I can still use Victor and Sabatuer and all my weapons that I unlocked up to level 39 but I am no a level 2 after 1 round of hoping it was some kind of on screen glitch! I can't choose any other characters I had previously unlocked and no other weapons either.

PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD FIX THIS. I just want to hit 60, unlock shopaholic achievement, and go back to enjoying the single player. PLEASE!

Same here, now on the Shanty town mission after the issue I had with most of the cut scenes not working, to add insult to injury I now have a wall appear where it wasn't before so I can physically not progress any further. When I am at a certain distance I can see where I need to go, as soon as I slide down in to the pool of nasty water their she is a wall which you can't get through amazing MAGIC WALLS, this is the third game now, bought disc from shop took it back due to cut scenes, got second same thing same place stuck so bought it digitally through Xbox live same thing oh and magic walls not happy.

Factory reset via menu option (as in deletion of all local data, re-installation of games) DOES NOT WORK!!! Cloud saves are sync'd back to the console when the game is launched for the first time but the same black screen issue is encountered. Seems to be an issue with a corrupt cloud save/profile.

All your saves are sync'd to the cloud so you wont lose your progress however this doesn't work as a fix.

Thanks for the post but.....technically its not a fix, it's a rather lengthy workaround and only applies to people who have access to a second Xbox One. Unfortunately, I do not so this is not a workaround I can use and I'd assume this is the case for many others. A "fix" can only be supplied by Square Enix, Crystal Dynamics or Microsoft.

From what I can tell, this is a bug in the game's code, not a data corruption issue. A data corruption issue would likely result in the saved game not being able to be loaded at all.

More likely, there are some combinations of events that lead to a state that throws an uncaught exception, causing what is probably the equivalent of a software/kernel panic, which would surely dump to a log file.

If there is a way to access log files in the XBox One, I'll gladly do so and send a report to Square Enix.
