View Full Version : Viral Marketing ads

Since this game will have many fictional corporation like the weapons manufactering, why not make some ads about them?

Promoting this game with ads about the augs and weapons, talking about what they are and their functions.

Heres an example:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uT0iQtkzFhE

I guess in the game they will be ads about the augmentations that we can buy for our character.

I agree. They've already said they're working hard to make the world believable by developing fictional brands and advertisements. I think releasing some "commercials" and stuff from companies in the game would be pretty excellent, and it would definitely grab people's eye.

If I worked for EM's marketing department, there would've been viral marketing up the wazoo, starting about 6 months ago - fake websites for Saref, Steiner-Bisley, Purity First (the anti-augmentation group) etc etc.

Unfortunately, this is what EM's marketing department looks like on an average day:

I think SE is expecting this game to sell on it's on purely because it's based on the DX franchise (even though right now it seems to be molested).

just because DX was a cult once it was released they might be expecting suckers (like me :() to buy the game on day one also the "flashy" and "mainstream" game mechanics will sell alone to the teenagers (the pseudo ADHD people) who are admiring the poor gameplay trailers

just like any other "big" game, SE don't really need advertise much because the gaming media is doing their job without any costs

I am not helping sell this half ass pseudo-Deus Ex game. I have way to many problems with their design decisions to help them sell it. On the other hand i tell everyone who asks me (A lot of people know me for the Deus Ex freak i am) to first download it and play it (because i am sure that they wont give us a demo) and buy it only if they like it and only after the price drops.

Oh and i have created a number of in game ads.

Viral marketing ... most of the time cheap and sometimes funny ... yeah, why not?

Fallout 3 did a great job with the videos about different products. They were just great! Something similar to that on some fake websites could be a nice combination, I guess.

To the ingame ads:

ME2 had some nice aspects of this on the Citadel Station. They did recognize you and because of your special condition, there were some funny mistakes in them.

It would be interesting to walk/sneek somewhere in the middle of the night and then the wall besides you flashes up brightly and addresses you with:
"ADAM! Did you ever feel lonely and depressed? Go and buy the fun pills XXX from YYY and feel good again!"
I would be quite surprised .. especially, when you might be focused on following someone. Your cover is blown and an action sequence follows. Later you come back and destroy the darn commercial wall ...

I think some advertisements based around this concept would be a good way to market the game, especially given the amount of effort that has gone into creating such a detailed world. However, I don't really see the point of advertising to the general public so far out from release because any interest created would probably be lost over the next seven months.

There's been a big push away from Viral Marketing and especially ARG and ARG-Style viral marketing in the past year or two because the evidence that it increases sales is weak at best.

Sorry, but that is just wrong. Viral marketing is working perfect, and costs less than normal tv-ads, prints etc.
Still that doesnt mean any "viral marketing" will be successful. For example, Old-Spice pushed their sales by 107% trough viral marketing because they did it right. But i guess its like in every branche, most people even though its their job fail hard at it ... (just look at all the crappy marketing out there)

It might sounds strange, but the first thing i learned about practical economy, is that alot of people are terrifyingly incompetent in what they do.

Um, the old spice guy was a conventional marketing campaign. You're aware it began as a series of TV ads, right? Sure, it went viral over Youtube, but it's hardly guerrilla marketing to capitalize on a successful commercial campaign.

Well the tv-spots were pretty limited, also they were shown in few countries, yet the campaign reached people worldwide. It may didnt start out viral for some people, still i guess it started viral for lots of people. Also, i think a mixture is not a bad idea, and i have to admit, i think the campaign would have worked out viral only aswell.

But to mention another cool viral. I also liked "Kevin Butler" the fictional Sony-Spokesman.

Well, im shure you wont be, seen that game too "Fighters uncaged", it seems to be pretty crappy, extrem input-lag combined with pre-defined activation of movements, so there actually is no difference between pressing a button to initiate a movement, or do something with your foot, to initiate a movement.

OT: What i found pretty interesting, Sony seems to be progressing with the PS-Eye (which you need for Move) pretty well, even though those are just low-budget titles, they are pretty much do what kinect does, just better (even Voice things) (yes kinect can do more, yet it cant do more now)

A biotechnology company based in North America, with its headquarters in the city of Detroit, Sarif Industries specializes in the design and manufacturing of advanced mechanical augmentations for human implantation. EDIT: Panchaea. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panchaea)

Panchaea (Greek: παγχαΐα) is a fictional island, first mentioned by ancient Greek philosopher Euhemerus in the late 4th century BC. Euhemerus describes the island and his trip there in his major work Sacred History, only fragments of which survive.

Fragments preserved by followers such as the later Greek historian Diodorus Siculus and 4th century AD Christian writer Eusebius of Caesarea describe Panchaea as a rational island paradise located in the Indian Ocean. Euhemerus came there by traveling through the Red Sea and around the Arabian Peninsula; in the island's temple of Zeus Triphylius he discovered a register of the births and deaths of the gods, proving they were merely historical figures. It is unlikely Panchaea was a real place, but rather a literary device invented by the author. In many parts its description is similar to Plato's Atlantis.

You have different abilities like defensive/offensive stuff. You have to be strategic in your movements and how you use these abilities, thats what I'm getting when I played the mini-game and looked at the shots/trailer. Its got RTS elements but don't expect something in-depth.

It has to be easy to use while still containing some complexity since you're gonna be doing it a lot when you're going the stealth/hack route.

I don't think he does. What Sarif wants is to turn everyone augmented, because that would essentially do the same thing Andrew Ryan wanted in Rapture - an unhindered world of better, "evolved" humans who would have somehow resolved petty problems and moved on to greater things.

If you guys check out the trailer for the first Exclusive Pack, you'll see a billboard in Shanghai depicting Panchaea, and it has the same structure as seen in the earlier trailer; so yeah, that's a confirmation that the huge underground thingie is indeed Panchaea.

Also there seems to be some of the resource management we all love in the form of "power-ups" or finite special abilities/programs that halt the security trace, unlock nodes, etc. (for example, the hand and circle symbols in the top right) This way people who explore and collect these things can breeze through hacking while those that don't can still get to some of those protected areas, they'll just have a tough time doing so.

I hate this site.
I keep having to remind myself it isn't real, and each time I do I die a little inside. :(

Do you sometimes stare at the background, and pretend that its real for just one second?

And then you wonder... if it was real... would you buy it..?

Would you..?

Then you go back to reality.

Boring, non-augmented reality.

I'd like to buy some of that stuff, but it would probably cost an arm and a leg.

Oh come on, what did we ever do to you? That was just uncalled for.
