View Full Version : Futuristic Wear - DX:HR Wardrobe Design

I've been looking for futuristic or modern clothes and other apparel for some time - with little success. So, does futuristic clothing exist, or is it just something you get to see in the movies? Most of the stuff you can easily find on the net is that "cyberpunk -crap", that looks more like it's a prop from a B-grade horror movie than actual casual wear.

What I'm asking you to do is to look for actual futuristic stuff and post it here! Let it be clothes, watches, sunglasses... whatever cyberish.

I'll give an example of what were looking for:

Equilibrium cleric coat (http://www.themightybean.com/photos/-Equilibrium---Partridge/29459_Equilibrium_014_122_456lo.jpg)

Adams clothing (http://www.nanoaugur.net/dx3/tb.png)

JC Denton (drawing) (http://orboscope.deviantart.com/art/JC-Denton-115370138?q=1&qo=1)

And by the way, do you think that JCs trenchcoat was a leather trench or of another textile material?

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Even cyborgs of the future neat to look cool. Just take a look at Adam Jensen to see how it’s done. If you’re into cyberpunk, Musterbrand will also be releasing a line of clothing for Deux Ex: Human Revolution later this year. Stay tuned for details on the clothing lines and online shop for that.

The clothing is actually stylish and cool, and this is undoubtedly just the beginning as we start seeing tons of legitimate apparel, beyond the standard printed Tees everyone has nowadays.

I'll start with some very cool, futuristic sunglasses by Oakley - they actually resemble those of Adam!

2nd Jul 2010, 06:59
I'd say these are the closest to Adam's glasses. At least, for anyone whose vision isn't augmented. With proper software, this set can display contextual information over surrounding objects, form virtual windows, and do many other nifty things. All in full stereo 3D. In addition to all that, they can operate in near IR, doubling as night vision goggles if you happen to have an IR flashlight.

Any ideas where to get those online? No luck through Google thus far.
As a fashion person myself I've always really liked the way Monarchy designs their clothing, such a major shame though how few stores sell their stuff nowadays on a global scale.
Trying to find that hoody sweater ATM, it seems to be sold out in most places... What a shame.
Oh and speaking of fashion in Japan, I'd say its one of the leading countries when it comes to futuristic wear, I highly suggest you go shopping in Tokyo because you can find TONS of goodies there :)
The designers & art people at EM clearly know their craft, major props to them for recognizing and embracing those futuristic elements already found in todays fashion, then taking them further with their own spin on it. Especially in terms of the whole Renaissance approach.

2nd and 3rd from the top on the right look to be the most practical to wear. 1st from top on the left looks intriguing. What would it feel like to other people? I don't know what to say about the last outfit with those fanny-pack like bundles coming off of her sides. Sort of Geigeresque, perhaps, but in a more plush, and brighter color? From what little I know about the fashion industry (extent being what I learned from Zoolander) almost none, or none of these outfits are meant to be sold and worn except by models coming down the runway, correct?

Geiger fanny packs. Bet he didn't see that one coming. :D

Elements from runway collections will eventually find their way into mainstream retailers in some diluted form or other. Of course I could just break out the ol’ knitting kit. I mean really, how hard can it be?...

I'm not sure those fashion costumes fit too well into the theme at hand here: they're barely futuristic in the cyber sense, and definately not made of modern or high-tech materials.

What I'd like to see are actual buyable and available clothes and apparel, that can be used by any average joe.

Here's something pretty nice of a watch: http://www.tokyoflash.com/en/watches/kisai/denshoku_black/

Tokyoflash has a lot of futuristic watch designs, though a lot of them are not that stylish or very usable.

Loving all "Boy Star" fashion so far.... if anyone of you is buying some items out of the shop tell us plz how good the shipping/quality etc. is. Thanks in advance and keep 'em coming! Received my order yesterday. Overall quality is OK (as opposed to good or great) but the promo-pics are pretty deceiving because the fabric is very thin (think of a standard t-shirt) and not at all like that of sweater or even a jacket. I don't regret buying it for the cheap price (still wearable with a cool design) but buyers should be aware of this beforehand.

There are the exact measurements (in cm) on their eBay-pages, at least on eBay Germany. You should compare them with those of a sweater/shirt that fits you.

Thanks for the pics, but I must admit that I am somewhat disappointed in the content of the primary photos. To me these represent the "overtly cyber-stuff" that looks just plain stupid. I'd never wear any of those, and they're far from casual. The last photo is obviously steampunk.

Shralla
10th Jul 2010, 19:47
They're not "overly futuristic." They're just ugly and stupid. Nobody is ever going to wear that stupid shoulder-mounted plasma cannon looking thing, especially not with how bland and retarded the undershirt is. Most of that stuff is obviously people just saying "Hey, this looks like it could be from the future. Let's sew it into our clothing!"

It's all too busy, lacks any sort of adherence to a style, and generally looks out of place, even by itself.

First picture is also more steampunk than anything, as is the second picture.

I'm not really familiar with ebay and that store selling Boystar clothes, so could someone tell me if it's possible to order different clothes and have them shipped with same postal rates? How do you buy multiple items?

I mean, now I only manage to go to buy a single item, and it gives postal fee of 18 euros. So if I were to buy 3 items separately each with the price of 20 euros, I'd have to pay 3 x 18 euros to get them? This can't be right.

Futurwear featuring trenchcoats strikes me as blase; a little too anime/Matrix/tasteless nerd BS. How many fat nerds in trenchcoats have you seen? Bonus points if they have a wide brimmed hat/fanny pack/jeans with t-shirt tucked in/ponytail/glasses with ugly frames.

I always thought the show Caprica had the right idea, with everyone dressing retro Modernist style clothes: suits, hats, gloves, etc.

I definitely agree about the fat nerds, especially with those Matrix-style trenchcoats. But you have to remember that people in the Modernist era also wore trenchcoats. A lot.
I'm not talking about those leather douchebag things they wear in the Matrix. Here's some pictures of what I'm talking about, these are illustrations of the trenchcoat fashion in the Modernist era.

If it's the same seller as me, what I did was pledge to buy, but did not pay right away. I got to the final page showing the 5 items, and clicked the 'request a quote' button so he would combine my shipping costs. Saved most of the costs.

It's crazy-foolish to think the cycle won't break. And when it does change, it changes very fast. Fashion is a living thing. Even during the cycle we're in, very new ideas, and very old ones make an appearance. And under the cloak of Cyberpunk, there's even more room to maneuver.

And remember, the high Renaissance-look is really only a wealthy weirdness. The middle and lower class have little to no reference to it in their own wardrobe.

Not in 17 years it aint. Just like all guns made today aren't going to be obsolete and unused 17 years from now. It's just lazy design and trying to make everything look overly futuristic. It's like those art mistakes Harvey Smith and Warren Spector talked about. But blown to an even higher proportion. It brings about a disconnection, something that keeps it less familiar looking to a person living today.

It's never lazy to come up with your own work. Not ever. It's lazy as in not looking into things logically. Like all of the guns in HR are stupid and stereotypically "futuristic" looking. IE Every Gun in the Future is a Bullpup, useless/weird loading, things like that. Besides, there's a lot of appropriately "futuristic" looking moderns guns they could use.

Pinky_Powers
18th Sep 2010, 04:20
The mistake you're laboring under is to link EM's little technology advancements or design references to what Invisible War did. The moment-to-moment visuals of HR are not very futuristic. But there's a technology overlay to them.

Hengsha is a futuristic city in HR the same way that Shanghai is a futuristic city to us. But other places look quite grounded. And these "wild-unrealistic weapons" are very grounded as well.

Yeah it does actually. The orange sights, how there's no serrations to **** it, the big oversized light/laser thing. Then all of the other gun designs that still have that dumb "everything in the future is a bullpup" thing. Compare it to something like Cowboy Beebop or Ghost In The Shell, which feature a lot of current firearms and some "futuristic" ones.

The world itself looks convincing enough in many parts, it's just the colour palette and the golden light that adds an element of surrealism to everything. You could take a german project apartment, add in this lighting, and it would look surreal and futuristic.

Yeah, I know, but it might weird people out if you made a logical extrapolation from the present to seventeen years ahead, because it doesn't fit with the popular notion (ie, completely and utterly different,) of what the "future" or "science fiction" is. So whack 'em over the head to prevent any doubt. Sledgehammer semiotics.

That was DX's greatest strength; its restraint, and pragmatism towards what NYC or wherever was going to look like in 54 years. People weren't going to be wearing outlandish clothes, and every single building wasn't going to be replaced with something new. Look around any city and you'll find stuff that's decades, if not centuries, old.

Shralla
19th Sep 2010, 19:45
All the old stuff is still there. Shanghai has a new "city" built on top of it, with the old stuff down below.

And I don't think that orange sights and "no serrations" make a gun look "overly futuristic."

Okay, the orange bits may seem a bit silly at first, but then if you go and look at newly released firearms, turns out some actually look even weirder. Please keep in mind that the DX:HR team are trying to build upon a plausible future (with some wild ideas weaved into that future like the double-decker city, for example) from today's viewpoint, not the viewpoint of the original DX or, say, Cowboy Beebop or Ghost In The Shell as are the examples you gave. :)

If someone showed me pictures of the Mateba Magnum (http://airbornecombatengineer.typepad.com/photos/weapons_firearms/mateba357magaimace.jpg) (or Mateba Unica 6 (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3017/2982810031_1279a38cdb.jpg)) and said it's not a real weapon but just a design for a videogame or movie/TV, I'd believe them. The Calico M950 (http://www.dwsuk.co.uk/New_site/Other/umaxpics/calh.gif) looks utterly silly, yet is real. The FN FiveSeveN USG (http://gunstactics.com/forum/attachments/800px-Five-seveN_USG[129].jpg) looks like a Chinese Pistol Toy made out of plastic, yet I have friends who tell me all the time it's the best pistol they've owned. The Walther G22 as another example doesn't even look like a plausible weapon anymore, more like a movie prop (seriously (http://www.randymays.com/waltherg22.jpg)), and yet... (http://www.shootingtimes.com/longgun_reviews/waltherg22_031506/) And you have the FNH P90/PS90 duo, which just look hilarious, or the FN F2000 assault rifle which a lot of local soldiers refer to as a "plastic fantastic".

Other rather silly looking pistol examples: Walther PPS / P 22, Taurus Millennium PT-, SIG Sauer P250, CZ 2075 RAMI, Caracal F/C/SC, the Beretta Px4 Storm... We're just too used to the old weapon designs we've grown up seeing, but you need to accept that weapons are actually starting to look like plastic "futuristic" designs.

Then there's the Beretta Neos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nj2See_pqPk). I mean, really, just look at it...

So, I really see no problem with the weapons we've seen so far; they seem plausible, even if they sometimes look a bit silly due to the modification mechanic add-ons. But that's due to preconceptions, since the actual weapons in the real world may end up looking something like that...

In the U.S., if you have a conceal/carry license, yes.

Last time I went looking to buy a gun, they had pink weapons to appeal to the female demographic, which, when I was at the gun shop, was about 50% of the people purchasing there.

Yeah. I guess it's a matter of having to protect yourself, should the need arise.
Do they only offer pink? Not all females would choose this colour as their favourite; just as not all males would expect to only have a choice of blue; if you get what I mean.

No, I believe they also had purple/lavender, bright green, and blue as well. The pink just really stood out in my memory. Still, I get your point, and TBH, I thought it was a bit silly and sexist myself when I saw them, but I suppose it's popular enough for them to still be selling them.

Might seem like just random off-topic images, but the point I'm trying to make is that if you have something that can be painted, or an option to buy something in a colour you like, why not go for it? I mean yeah, it'll look downright silly to most of us, but if the option's there... It can be clothing, guns or toys. And if the market is large enough, it'll get made. Probably.

Oh man. $50 for that jacket is cheap as hell, looks like. Depends on what the material is like, really. Still though, for something so stylish with that many details, it's pretty damn cheap.

I have this jacket, in grey. Of what I've seen of their line, this is the best material they carry. If there is one jacket/hoodie I'd recommand from Youstar's, it's this one. The ornemental zippers are ridiculously cheap, but there is no reason to actually open or close them. Buttons are alright, but you can change them anyway. Well, well worth the cheap price tag, if it interests you.

Two things, though. It's not as long as it looks, keep in mind the korean dimensions. I'm a bit over 180 and it falls mid-hips. Second, be weary of the sizing. Use their measuring chart, and be precise in your calculations. If you go strictly by sizes you will inevitably fail to pick the right one for you. Unless you're korean, of course!

Maybe i'm the only one but I really like the incorporation of these geometric forms in clothing for this game. To me it suits a cyberpunk aesthetic and fits in with the mathematical principles they're trying to reflect from the renaissance in a much more interesting way than the high collar, baroque, asian inspired gowns they've gone with elsewhere. That stuff has already been done to death by Squeenix and in the new Star Wars movies etc.

http://gamerant.com/video-game-clothing-metal-gear-deux-ex-gran-turismo-robk-79139/

Yeah, I love some of the military style fashion as it merges a little with some steampunk clothing too.
But that jacket is just too much, lol. :D

Hey everyone - haven't posted in a while, but I thought some of you might interested:

A while back there was a thread ( http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=110755 ) about real-world fashion resembling stuff in DX:HR. Someone posted something about a Japanese brand of clothing called BOY STAR that had made a few jackets/trenchcoats that were a bit DX:HR-ish, which prompted me to hunt one down and purchase one.

Well, when I finally got the thing it was WAY too damn small!! The listing described it as being size "XL", and when I received the coat in the mail the tag on the coat also said "XL" - but when I went to try it on, I found that it was several sizes too small! This is because it is a JAPANESE XL, not an AMERICAN XL!

Anyway, I am just now getting around to selling it. Here is the eBay listing:

(*Moderator Edit* If a member is interested in buying it, please PM aduckworth for the link.)

http://www.freezeetch.com/crap/boystartrenchcoat.jpg

It's an awesome-looking coat (obiv!), but I would not recommend buying it unless you are a small person!! I normally wear American XL, and I couldn't even bring my arms down to my sides with this coat on. I would say it is at best an American size S, or possibly even XS.

Anyway, hopefully this isn't intrusive, I just thought some of you may be interested as it is sort of tangentially relevant... ;) Anyway, happy bidding (and thanks if you do)!

I can supply an army of UK fashion designers and students who would happily make exact replicas of his coat and armour at a price.

Perhaps make a poll for various key items and see which have the most demand. It would make sense, if several of you are considering having an AJ or JC coat, to buy collectively from the same designer and massively reduce costs.

AlexOfSpades
19th May 2011, 16:49
Damn, but those coats surely look cool.

aduckworth
20th May 2011, 04:10
I think the actual coat is decent looking, it just doesn't fit me at all!

The coat was originally $60, which is fairly cheap for a coat, let alone one that was imported from another country - the materials aren't outstanding, but it's about the quality that I would expect for a coat in that price range. I have no idea if it is likely to fall apart or not. I didn't wear it, and I don't know anything about the brand because there is virtually no information about them on the internet.

And no, it's not identical to Adam Jensen's coat, but it was referenced in the older thread about DX:HR-esque clothing, so I found it vaguely relevant. =P

How much would an Adam Jensen or JC coat cost?

That would be cool. Have you seen how the jacket looks in actual gameplay(different from the pics)? It has a very nice pattern. I would buy this for a reasonable price, depending on material and design quality.

I know a Japanese fashion designer who went to St Martins, works with leather, could probably do the flower patterns. I have pics of her work. I know others who work with leather too, but haven't seen their stuff.

How many EM staff and fans want one?

had to dumb this one down for console users ;)

I like the idea of doing something and uploading the pattern cutter's work, so that thousands of fans can hire the local student dressmaker and turn up to the DX convention in thousands of DX coats, me and Kyle filming it from the chopper, Cannes here we go... Elias with his army... Elizas etc...Megan's, who did Alex's voice, Jay's etc...

Man, I'd love Jensen's coat. Or Kelso's, but I'm not a female.

[FGS]Shadowrunner
4th Jul 2011, 04:52
I'm getting an estimate tonight from a designer, but I'm guessing it's way more than $200.

The flower pattern itself could be really expensive and time consuming to produce.

Adam's coat is very meaty as well, thick leather. It will be a work of art, if done properly in real life.

As I said before, the more people ordering together, the cheaper it gets. To make one coat is a pain in the butt for a designer. To make one set of patterns and then hire a team to make a lot of coats, gets a lot lot cheaper, per unit cost.

I'm going to see if it is possible though, to get a sample made and displayed, to show it's possible.

Do you know if the coat would be a standard fit, or will there be a "ladies version"?

[FGS]Shadowrunner
4th Jul 2011, 15:26
So far I only saw people talking about coats for female characters, but I think it's a good idea. I imagine the price wouldn't be different, unless a shorter knee length version was in demand with the ladies.

[FGS]Shadowrunner

The designer I spoke to was not really interested in making a Jensen-like coat, even for £2000 Sterling.

Would be better and cheaper if Eidos commissioned a larger outfit, making a fabric with the flower pattern, and then just took orders from all the fans. People's budgets for a coat seem to vary between $200 and at least $2000, but I suspect some will pay a lot more, for a leather version limited edition.
