BATMAN/DOC SAVAGE SPECIAL

Written by Brian Azzarello; Art by Phil Noto; Sketchbook material and variant cover by Rags Morales; Cover by JG Jones

Doc Savage returns to DC Comics…and comes face-to-fist with the Batman! Superstar scribe Brian Azzarello (100 BULLETS, JOKER) and the breathtaking art of Phil Noto combine to shine the first light on a shadowy new version of the DC Universe, where the thugs run rampant, corruption runs deep, and even heroes can't be trusted! Doc Savage, the Man of Bronze, hates what he's heard about the connections between a grisly murder and Gotham City's violent new vigilante. But the Batman can't abide do-gooders getting in his way…and his .45 just won't stay in its holster!

Be here for this vital prologue to an upcoming 6-issue miniseries by Azzarello and Rags Morales (IDENTITY CRISIS), which will pull back the curtain to reveal the full width and breadth of DC's new pulp-influenced universe. This special issue also features sketchbook material by Rags Morales that will show you just what you're in for! You might think you're ready – but you're very, very wrong…

Thanks for staying up late with The Source tonight, gang. We’ve got a bunch of interesting news spinning out of the Baltimore Retailer Summit, so sit back and enjoy.

Did you think the BATMAN/DOC SAVAGE SPECIAL was all we had in the works for the good Doctor and company? Of course not. In fact, we’ve got a ton of stuff to roll out.

http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/files/2009/10/blkt-102600.jpg

First up (you’ll get the joke in a second), we have THE FIRST WAVE mini-series, which hits early next year from writer Brian Azzarello and artist Rags Morales, with variant covers from superstar artist J.G. Jones. The series sets the stage for the new world that houses not only Doc Savage, but the Spirit, Batman, Black Canary, the Avenger and a host of other heroes with a gritty, modern noir backdrop that Azzarello does best.

We’ve got some lovely Morales art here for you, too. In case you’re not convinced. But that’s not all.

http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/files/2009/10/blkt-104600.jpg

Later on in 2010, we’ll have two, new ongoing series – DOC SAVAGE and THE SPIRIT, tied directly to the new status quo created in the BATMAN/DOC SAVAGE special and FIRST WAVE mini-series. But why let all the cats out of the bag at once?

So, sit back, enjoy the art and stay tuned here to The Source for more details.

A week ago, we unveiled the details about THE FIRST WAVE, writer Brian Azzarello and artist Rags Morales’ gritty pulp romp, featuring Doc Savage, Batman, the Spirit and more. But did you think we’d stop there?

As we noted, superstar artist J.G. Jones will be handling variant covers for the mini-series, and we snagged an in-progress look at the cover to THE FIRST WAVE #1. We even pulled the very busy Jones away from his desk for a second to give us his thoughts on the story spinning out of November’s BATMAN/DOC SAVAGE SPECIAL. Take it away, J.G.:

“I’m just happy to be aboard the First Wave bus along with the serious talents doing the heavy lifting. I love the world that Brian has inhabited with these iconic pulp characters, and the artwork by Rags is spot on perfect. Catch the wave; it should be a wild ride!”

Well said. And now, the cover…

Back in the 20's and 30's,before comics came about, there were illustrated magazines that featured full-lenth stories, normally featuring raw, gritty qualities. Some of these characters were The Phantom,The Shadow,Doc Savage, and Fu Manchu.Back in the 1930's,Batman first appeared with, believe it or not, firearms, hence the dual 45's in the shoulder holsters. This story will be set in a Gotham City in California, and will most likely be a period piece set in the 40's and 50's,and will more than likely feature no superpowers.

It’s here. We’ve talked and teased and talked some more about not only the special, but the upcoming THE FIRST WAVE around these parts pretty often, but nothing beats real pages to look at. So, here we go. A first look at the BATMAN/DOC SAVAGE SPECIAL, from writer Brian Azzarello and artist Phil Noto:

@Batfan08: Please use the edit function. I mean we're okay with double posts but making 4 posts thru the thread is just abit too much.

Anyhow i'm not sure do i wish to check this out. Brian Azzarello is becoming one of DC's most fan loved writers tho. If i hear people praise this i'll definatly check this out. Not to mention it seems there going maybe with a Murdering Batman which is kinda cool deal.

I saw the Batman / Doc Savage promo in the backs of all the DC titles this week. Lost interest when I saw Batman with guns. The Doc Savage parts might be cool.

And um, Batfan...you can resize pics on sites like photobucket (http://photobucket.com/). Makes things a little less overwhelming for the other forum users. Just fyi and all.

EDIT: Actually, you know what? I bet that's not really Batman with the pistols in the last few scans. That's probably some cat burglar dressed as him.

SECOND EDIT: Also, nice artwork.

The Batman story looks interesting. I'll check it out. The art looks beautiful, and the idea of Batman with guns (though a seemingly blasphemous idea) in a pulp world is definitely intriguing.

I would've,but it all wouldn't fit in single posts. If there's anyway you can merge my posts, that'd be cool.

@Sir Legendhead
I would use photobucket, but I post via my ps3,so,not all programs work.

#1 was good. He uses the guns for non-lethal reasons but people think he's a murderer because of the guns. Great nod to the first incarnation of Batman.

Batman and Spirit, did anyone else pee when they read this? I really enjoy reading oldie comics (before I was born) when everything was pulpish, and surely this peaks my interests. This could do really well and expand the DCU. Batman with guns is for sure a realistic Batman. Who would wander around and throw boomerangs shaped like bats at people? Seriously. Can you imagine how they could redo Superman, Wonder Woman, and the Green Lantern?

This pulp-verse has no super powered guys. ^^; Tho pulp-versions of Supes and Wonder Woman would prolly be their golden age reincarnation which means: jerks who kill bad guys. :D

Great nod to the first incarnation of Batman.I'm thinking they might be dummy bullets -- not blanks, I mean the ones that knock people down without penetrating. Still doesn't appeal to me to see him using guns though.

Aside from that, I like how they're writing his character. Almost like James Bond with a cape.

The Golden Tree bears bitter fruit! The Blackhawks are after The Spirit. Doc Savage is after the Blackhawks. Anton Colossi is after William “Johnny” Littlejohn. And only Rima, the eyes of the jungle, knows what the heroes do not: something glorious and terrible has risen in the darkest corner of Hida'lgo!
