View Full Version : Reviews of Mini Ninjas

Yes, it's getting to be that time of year when the Ninja Master deals out grades for the performance of his students. Let's hope they're all good!

The Guardian kicks off the reviews with a very nice score of 4 / 5 for the game with this wonderful conclusion: "The overall effect is almost Zen-like: Mini Ninjas' constant charm renders it calming and even relaxing to play. Which ought to go down well with the parents of games-obsessed youngsters prone to incipient hyperactivity. Indeed, any parent watching Mini Ninjas being played will find it hard to resist the temptation to have a go over their own, at which point their offspring may find it tricky to regain control of the gamepad."

Go read it right away - Guardian Review of Mini Ninjas (http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/gamesblog/2009/sep/01/mini-ninjas-game-review).

NZGamer.com has also reviewed the game and gives it an 8.2 out of 10! - read it here (http://nzgamer.com/x360/reviews/948/mini-ninjas.html).

The Times review Mini Ninjas and give it 5 of 5 ! No link, sadly. Here's what they say: "The only comparison that springs to mind for sheer inventiveness is Nintendo's Zelda series. The script is knowingly tongue in cheek while the characters themselves are so delightful that you might see them re-created as stuffed toys in the near future. If you don't have an excuse to buy it earlier, put this top of your Christmas list".

JustPushStart reviewed the game and gave it 3 of 5, saying: "Do not expect a deep Ninja action in this game but rather expect a fun and easy Ninja adventure." Link HERE (http://www.justpushstart.com/2009/09/05/mini-ninjas-review/).

Spong.com reviews Mini Ninjas and gives it 89%, saying that: "Mini Ninjas is aimed at kids, and I'm sure they'll love it. But the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) humour and overall polish means it appealed to THIS adult. It manages to be interesting without being overly challenging. The control method is wonderfully friendly, and the game introduces a lot of RPG gaming concepts in a unintimidating manner." - Spong Review (http://spong.com/feature/10109965/Mini-Ninjas).

Electronic Theater reviews Mini Ninjas and gives it 82%! Here's the quote: "Mini Ninjas is one of the most consistently enjoyable Platform titles on the Current-Generation. IO Interactive may have stepped out of their comfort zone with Mini Ninjas, but it’ll only make them stronger in the long run." The article is here (https://mail.eidos.co.uk/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.electronictheatre.co.uk/index.php/playstation3/playstation3-in-depth-reviews/2970-electronic-theatre-in-depth-review-mini-ninjas).

Total Video Gamer reviews Mini Ninjas and provides us with a solid 8 of 10. This is what they haveto say: "Despite the disappointment of there being no co-op play in Mini Ninjas' campaign, the game does enough to keep players entertained through well mixed gameplay, loveable characters, stylistically beautiful environments, and good humour. The Japanese story is finely applied and a wide audience will enjoy this title, meaning that it fulfils its remit and then some." Link to the article here (https://mail.eidos.co.uk/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.totalvideogames.com/Mini-Ninjas/review-14562.html).

NowGamer reviews the game and gives it 8 of 10! This is what they're saying about the game: "Do not underestimate Mini Ninjas; it is worthy of everybody’s time – a beautifully conceived product by all accounts". The link is HERE (http://www.nowgamer.com/reviews/xbox-360/8652/mini-ninjas).

lucidLan reviews Mini Ninjas and gives it 8 of 10. Here's what they say: "All in all, Mini Ninjas is such an adorable game that just like a cute Labrador puppy moaning and waving its tail at you for attention, would make it practically impossible not to pick up. Sayonara!". Link HERE (http://lucidlan.com/news/2427/mini-ninjas-gets-a-review-full-of-style-and-kungfu-skills).

VideoGamerdotCom says: "That said, there is a good deal of fun to be had here, if you play stealthily, and there are plenty of lovely little touches that do make you smile - you'd have to be the grinchiest of grinches not to at some points fall for Mini Ninjas' charm. The cutscenes are lovely, the dialogue and voice over work stereotypical but fitting, and the soundtrack is a wistful traditional Japanese score that rekindles memories of The Karate Kid. Still, Mini Ninjas will do nothing to quell the growing call from core gamers for IO's "next-gen" Hitman game." and gives the game 7 of 10. There's one posted on justpushstart.com. 3/5 Meh...
I don't really listen to reviews honestly... never have.
Just a lot of people who think they can write well and blow a lot of hot air around. Not to mention I've even seen reviewers make up things that aren't in or wrong with a game.. No joke... A reviewer wrote flat lies about a game I was interested in on IGN a couple months back. I'm talkin' facts too, not opinions about it.

Yeah me too. I take reviews with a grain of salt until I've played the game myself.

Pocket Gamer gave the game a 6/10:

More tame than terrifying, Mini Ninjas has the looks to impress, but suffers from slowdown and lacks the punch needed to really pull off its fighting fiesta

Note: This review is for the Mobile phone version of the game and not the normal version of the game.

Some really great reviews here Nick

9th Sep 2009, 11:26
Yeah, the team is very pleased that most people seem to get what they wanted to do with the game. So it's happy days so far.

9th Sep 2009, 12:18
Yeah some people seem to be really missing the point, haha.

Metacritic (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps3/minininjas) seems to glossing over all the good reviews in favour of the average ones...

I read through the google translation of their crazy spanish review and they don't seem to be able to get past the fact that the game looks childish but has some depth. They're wildly underestimating the ability of younger players and absolutely missing the fact that if kids can't handle some feature they'll happily ignore them and play the game without...

I think of it like movie "shrek". With the amount of innuendo and adult themes in there you think it's clearly not for kids - but the art style and likeability of the characters means that kids love it! They just have no idea what's really going on half the time - so everybody wins. :D

And then there's the guys like justpushstart.com who seem to expect a remake of ninja gaiden... Does it look like a hardcore game with punishing difficulty only the elite can appreciate? Pfft!

I won't even start on the people who whinge because it's not Hitman... *sigh*

I dont know why some reviewers have given Mini Ninjas so low score. They confused the game with something else? really only 65%? Dont trust reviews, try the demo and see how FUN it is...

just found a new review. 91% score http://www.gamingtrend.com/Reviews/review/review.php?ReviewID=1296

11th Sep 2009, 05:40
GamesRadar have given it a 7/10.

11th Sep 2009, 17:43
Eurogamer gave the game a 6/10. I would show the link but honestly the review was so poorly written (barely a page long) that I would recommend most gamers/potential customers to ignore it.

A lot of people are basing this game on reviews, personally, I buy a game if it looks fun or interesting. Which I did with this. I don't think reviewers do their jobs right, I would rather have a full fledged article on the pros and cons of the game rather than a score. Play magazine knows how to do it. But I'm glad it's getting good reviews. :).

there is a big ******* bugs that shut down after logo.

I have been trying to get a GamePro editor to review the game only time will tell if it will happen. I like this game so much that I drove to 2 Best Buy stores the day it was released to get a copy as only one store within a 30+ miles radius had it for the PS3.

Congratulations io and Eidos for releasing a great game! Scores from reviews dont mean anything to me when making a decision to buy or not to buy a new game. All i can say is this is a great game and those mini ninja are just too cute. I would recommend buying or playing the demo first if you are not sure that you like it. In my opinion it is well worth the money. :-)

I understand some of the complaint other critics made: I agreed that the graphics are great, the music is pretty zenish, but the difficulty curve definitely needs some work. It's just way too easy, I got through the entire game using almost nothing but straight forward attack, little magic and items (for the record, even those magic are either sun-ray for the ghost or because I choose to use magic instead of attacks). A game critic (Yahtzee) once contemplate about how some FPS's game play is pretty much "hold the attack button until every thing in front of the player breaks", this is kind of how I felt about this game. And FYI, I played through the entire game on so called "hard" setting.

For those who has yet to play the game, it will probably be better that you don't and simply wait for someone to upload their walkthrough of the game and watch it like an extremely long movie.
